+Apple - are you listening? I have been a loyal customer back to the original Macintosh SE and with every update I have never felt more left behind than I do now. I paid $400 for an Apple TV a year ago and now I can't use AirPlay.....? *! Are you going to take care of us 1st generation folks who paved the way for you to make AppleTV2 or leave us behind in the dust? How about at least a discount for us 1st Gen owners if the original hardware can't hack it?+

Totally agree there. I think Apple is just going down the same path they tried to years ago. I'm not a happy customer. I will not be an apple customer for much longer. I am sick of companies who try too hard to attract 'new customers' in lieu of supporting their existing. Hope you're happy with that stat.

My god this is realy unbelievable. My Airport Express works without any software update with my new iPhone's AirPlay function. I was so happy about AirPlay, I was about to buy 1st generation Apple TV in one of our shops (we stil can't buy new Apple TV, just an old - expensive one in Slovenia). So I googled for "airplay on old apple tv" to make sure AirPlay works with old Apple TV and found this discussion.
Now for sure I won't buy it...

AppleTV still works great from iTunes, but not from the iPod.

The annoying thing isn't that there's no upgrade for AppleTV (though Apple have been slack here - Both AppleTV and iPhone 3G were current products only a few months ago, so should still see some support), but that Apple have installed crippleware in iOS to activly block something that should work out of the box. If the iPod can see airtunes devices (which it can), then it should work for AppleTV 1 unless they've chosen to break it deliberatly.

Yes I totally agree, Wasn't that long ago I brought my Old version Apple TV from the Apple store, and they couldn't even tell me a new one was due out when. I asked. so it should stream no problems music any way as the airtunes does on the apple remote on the iPhone, but of course yes would be great just to stream audio too from the phone, because now I only get music from the phone to the Airport Express in the Kitchen from the phone and not the Apple TV in the Living room. with out starting up the apple TV grrr and using the Remote app on the iPhone with it's slow at getting things going and likes to disconnect a lot arrrrgghhh.

And More Ball-crap is That I have a Canon MP970 printer Connected to My Network Via LAN cable to my Airport Extreme so Wirelessly from my MAC I can print a Doc. But hey of course My iPhone can't print thought it Unless it was a Rubbish HP printer which I had thrown in the Skip for its wasting paper & ink and well just not wanting to print

You know I really like Apple products but its pretty pathetic when they don't update something like the old apple tv for something as simple as Airplay.

It isn't actually that simple. AirPlay is a feature of iOS, something the ATV2, iPod, iPhone and iPad have in common. The ATV1, however, runs a stripped down version of OS X Tiger. Neither the ATV1 hardware nor OS are compatible with the ATV2, thus providing an upgrade for it with the same features would require a significant software development project, which isn't going to happen for an obsoleted product.

Yeah that's a "safe" answer but unfortunately its wrong. Especially since the 1st Generation Apple tv can already stream HD youtube through the youtube app actually on it. You can also stream music already with airfoil from computer to apple tv. The streaming part has to do with the internet speed and a fast wireless router such as an airport extreme 802.11 N router. It has nothing to do with the memory since its already buffering Apple quicktime trailers in HD and youtube videos in HD on the 1st gen apple tv.

What's the next excuse?

Oh I forgot to mention that you can also "rent" HD movies on the 1st Gen Apple tv and it goes through a streaming process and has to buffer. This is an actual movie...you would think if you can stream something like an HD movie that surely it must be possible to stream from an iPad to the 1st gen apple tv, so don't tell me that its a memory issue.

Bad bad bad. Very unhappy, Mr Jobs. Do you hear us??? We bought into your little hobby before you even had the foresight to see it yourself. And this is how you reward those loyal customers who didn't make the original AppleTV supporters? By screwing us on such a rather simple update?

Executive direction is really starting to fail regularly at Apple. So disappointing.

Nothing has been removed from older Apple TVs, it's just a final software update which has been missed off. Both iTunes and AppleTV1 use a version of OSX and continue to connect.

We know AppleTV2 and iPhones both use iOS and can connect. However, iTunes and Airport Express are not iOS devices so there must be a way in which Airplay can work.

My Apple TV1 still accepts audio and video streams from iTunes so the excuse I've seen elsewhere on the Discussions about flash memory on the newer Apple TV, needed to buffer streams, makes no real sense.

swissgrip,

It seems AirPrint wasn't fully ready but may be updated later. There are a number of third party apps built by printer manufacturers which allow wireless printing from iOS devices. Printopia from ecamm is an application for your Mac that allows AirPrint to see any printer plugged in to your Mac or network. It can also save as PDF directly from your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch to either your Mac or Dropbox.

wow, sounds pretty significant considering that you can upgrade old tiger machines already to leopard and considering that the apple tv 1st gen that i bought is only about 7 months old...that's less than a year friendo. You would think that apple would at least update that hardware and OS in any 1st gen apple tv at least within the same year that the new one comes out or heck maybe within 7 months. iOS has been in the making for over 2 yrs so they could of considered the 1st gen apple tv in the year 2010. And its not about inventory either, apple is very precise about their inventory, they don't have millions of 1st gen apple tvs just sitting in a warehouse. They make what they project to sell and their projections are very accurate. Surely this would give them plenty of time to project at least the last year of shipments of the 1st gen apple tv for an upgrade.

The 1st gen apple tv came out within 6 months of the 1st gen iPhone and the 1st gen iPhone was able to upgrade to iOS 4.2

You simply don't understand how the technology (and the technology business) works. The processor, architecture and OS between the two are completely different. AirPlay only works between iOS devices, it doesn't work with Macs any more than it does with the ATV1.

It's unfortunate that you bought yours so close to the end of its product lifecycle, but it's no more realistic to expect a major OS upgrade for the ATV1 than it is to expect to be able to install Snow Leopard on a PPC Mac. Enjoy your ATV1 for what it is and buy an ATV2 as a remedy for your AirTunes blues if you can't live without that feature.

I just don't believe this, My 1st Gen Apple TV is less than a year old as I didn't know that there was going to be a 2nd Gen version, now I learn that Apple won't be supporting the 1st gen any longer ?? That's like Microsoft stating that because Windows 7 is out we won't be supporting Vista any longer. You pay out this money and then find out no updates and if you want the updates you'll have to buy a newer version.

Just like when I purchased the iPod Touch 3rd gen and then 2 months later the 4th gen came out with more features. Apple really know how to screw people over.
