But hey of course My iPhone can't print thought it Unless it was a Rubbish HP printer which I had thrown in the Skip for its wasting paper & ink and well just not wanting to print

You know I really like Apple products but its pretty pathetic when they don't update something like the old apple tv for something as simple as Airplay.

It isn't actually that simple. AirPlay is a feature of iOS, something the ATV2, iPod, iPhone and iPad have in common. The ATV1, however, runs a stripped down version of OS X Tiger. Neither the ATV1 hardware nor OS are compatible with the ATV2, thus providing an upgrade for it with the same features would require a significant software development project, which isn't going to happen for an obsoleted product.

Yeah that's a "safe" answer but unfortunately its wrong. Especially since the 1st Generation Apple tv can already stream HD youtube through the youtube app actually on it. You can also stream music already with airfoil from computer to apple tv. The streaming part has to do with the internet speed and a fast wireless router such as an airport extreme 802.11 N router. It has nothing to do with the memory since its already buffering Apple quicktime trailers in HD and youtube videos in HD on the 1st gen apple tv.

What's the next excuse?

Oh I forgot to mention that you can also "rent" HD movies on the 1st Gen Apple tv and it goes through a streaming process and has to buffer. This is an actual movie...you would think if you can stream something like an HD movie that surely it must be possible to stream from an iPad to the 1st gen apple tv, so don't tell me that its a memory issue.

Bad bad bad. Very unhappy, Mr Jobs. Do you hear us??? We bought into your little hobby before you even had the foresight to see it yourself. And this is how you reward those loyal customers who didn't make the original AppleTV supporters? By screwing us on such a rather simple update?

Executive direction is really starting to fail regularly at Apple. So disappointing.

Nothing has been removed from older Apple TVs, it's just a final software update which has been missed off. Both iTunes and AppleTV1 use a version of OSX and continue to connect.

We know AppleTV2 and iPhones both use iOS and can connect. However, iTunes and Airport Express are not iOS devices so there must be a way in which Airplay can work.

My Apple TV1 still accepts audio and video streams from iTunes so the excuse I've seen elsewhere on the Discussions about flash memory on the newer Apple TV, needed to buffer streams, makes no real sense.

swissgrip,

It seems AirPrint wasn't fully ready but may be updated later. There are a number of third party apps built by printer manufacturers which allow wireless printing from iOS devices. Printopia from ecamm is an application for your Mac that allows AirPrint to see any printer plugged in to your Mac or network. It can also save as PDF directly from your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch to either your Mac or Dropbox.

wow, sounds pretty significant considering that you can upgrade old tiger machines already to leopard and considering that the apple tv 1st gen that i bought is only about 7 months old...that's less than a year friendo. You would think that apple would at least update that hardware and OS in any 1st gen apple tv at least within the same year that the new one comes out or heck maybe within 7 months. iOS has been in the making for over 2 yrs so they could of considered the 1st gen apple tv in the year 2010. And its not about inventory either, apple is very precise about their inventory, they don't have millions of 1st gen apple tvs just sitting in a warehouse. They make what they project to sell and their projections are very accurate. Surely this would give them plenty of time to project at least the last year of shipments of the 1st gen apple tv for an upgrade.

The 1st gen apple tv came out within 6 months of the 1st gen iPhone and the 1st gen iPhone was able to upgrade to iOS 4.2

You simply don't understand how the technology (and the technology business) works. The processor, architecture and OS between the two are completely different. AirPlay only works between iOS devices, it doesn't work with Macs any more than it does with the ATV1.

It's unfortunate that you bought yours so close to the end of its product lifecycle, but it's no more realistic to expect a major OS upgrade for the ATV1 than it is to expect to be able to install Snow Leopard on a PPC Mac. Enjoy your ATV1 for what it is and buy an ATV2 as a remedy for your AirTunes blues if you can't live without that feature.

I just don't believe this, My 1st Gen Apple TV is less than a year old as I didn't know that there was going to be a 2nd Gen version, now I learn that Apple won't be supporting the 1st gen any longer ?? That's like Microsoft stating that because Windows 7 is out we won't be supporting Vista any longer. You pay out this money and then find out no updates and if you want the updates you'll have to buy a newer version.

Just like when I purchased the iPod Touch 3rd gen and then 2 months later the 4th gen came out with more features. Apple really know how to screw people over.

It would be nice to know why the 1st generation won't do wha the 2nd generation Apple tv does now due to the recent update. Is it Hardware issues like memory? Is it different operating systems? Is it something to do with what the Movie guys don't want Apple doing, or us, the customers doing? I have no doubt that the 1st generation is capable of having this -nice to have little feature- and yea, it's upsetting to a degree, if we won't be given this feature... but I'll still use it. It sure would have been a nice feature though, and I still want and hope Apple let's us have this in the future. Until then, give us some sort of idea of why or just come out and say "it never will" so we can just move on.

Agreed Not having airplay on older apple TVs is a lame money grab to loyal customers who likely have apple tv, iphone, ipad and macbook to desire the feature. You can already get us to get a new apple tvs for our bedroom or den with this awesome feature. This move hurts the goodwill from multiple device buyers and desire to support it further.

Just puts a bad mark on your rep.

As the owner of an original AppleTV I find this annoying as well.

If I had to guess, the real problem is a combination of issues from the movie studios and DRM. The old AppleTV had component out and the new one is HDMI only. As such, the original ATV has the "analog hole" content creators are so deathly afraid of. I'm sure there was some sort of concession made as a trade off that killed this.

Of course, this is doubly troubling since my HDTV came about RIGHT before they started putting in HDMI and I can't even use the new ATV if I wanted to.
