voice memos not showing up in itunes

IMac G5, Mac OS X (10.4.7)
Hello,
I've seen some people mention 'right click' and choose "convert to MP3"... I would like to convert mine to MP3 but this is not an option on my list. The only option is "convert to AAC". I am sure I converted some voice memos to MP3 format a few years ago but I am not seeing this as an option now.
I also saw someone mention the "advanced menu" but I don't see this either. Very frustrated by the voice memo issue...
If anyone can help me convert them to MP3s I just want to burn them to a CD and get them off my mac and my phone... thanks!
iTunes--Preferences...-->General-->Import Settings (button)-->Import Using: (drop-down - also, Setting: = quality of the import type chosen)
Whatever is set there is what you have as an option when you right/control click.
In the latest iTunes, I can right-click on any music file and have many options, but one is "Create <format> version" where <format> = what was chosen above.
Thanks for the many hints I found here. My problem was similar: voice memos that showed up on the iPhone did not appear in iTunes (Mac OS, latest iTunes.) After hours of frustration, and the mention of MP encoding above, it occurred to me that I had recently reset
iTunes--Preferences...-->General-->Import Settings (button)-->Import Using:
to "Mp3" (in a vain attempt to use iTunes to convert MIDI files to MP3 - another big waste of time, ultimately unsuccessful.)
I am not certain if this setting and the Voice Memo problem are related. However when I
--reset Import Using to "Apple lossless encoder"
--chose the iPhone Voice Memos folder in iTunes, and
--selected the Sync button lower right on that screen...
...my voice memos magically reappeared.
Why in the 21st century we are forced to use the obtuse, inefficient, buggy, extremely badly designed usability nightmare known as iTunes for simple file transfer between devices is hard to understand. Even harder to understand is the fact that Apple continues to enjoy a reputation for well-designed software. That may have been true back in the day when their competition was Windows 5. That people who should know better continue to gush about Apple software usability today is just pathetic.
Not sure what's up with that Bedon ... never seen that before, but guessing it may indicate some sort of corruption or partial transfer ??
Can you still play the voice memos on your phone? If so, I could only think of trying to change the identifying attributes on those files so as to force iTunes to "re-recognize" them. Try anything - give them a different category, maybe even trim a second if you can.
Hope that helps
It's wonderful... now the problem is me? Or anyone who [...] should be ashamed ?!?!
Shoudn't Apple be aware on herself, moreover after years of this discussion (145.000 views!), of this problem?
Or do we have to patiently fill precisely a form for the **** fix to come?
And in the meanwhile shouldn't I write down a quite simple workaround that 100% works?
It's full of people that keep writing "Ok this worked for me, maybe not for you: Trim that, rename the other one, connect the phone while it's turned off then turn it on having a thumb up in your nose in the meanwhile and MAYBE it COULD work" and I am the problem?
I'm in the same position. I'm experiencing mental anguish about not being able to transfer a series of voice memos from December 2012 and January 2013. The memos are conversations with my father in hospital, dying. Today I've read about the Trim Memo approach but I can't seem to get that to work.
I have at minimum 20 good recordings on the device that I can not afford to loose. Now I can not sync those voice memos. Cant wait to get my 2 years contract to get over.
No wonder why Apple is sitting on its funeral pile.
After years of frustration with being forced to use the abysmally designed iTunes to accomplish simple tasks like moving Voicememos from my iPhone to a hard disk, I have found two solutions:
1. An app called iExplorer. I'd call it brilliant except that all it does is what the Apple OS ought to have enabled from day one: gives you a tree view of all the files on your iPhone, allowing you to move them back and forth at will.
2. I got an Android.

Wow: can't believe Apple removed the app name from my post and probably the post from Apple_Software_Is_Riding_on_Its_Laurels
There's a bug: it's a pain, but it can happen. People are stuck because of this, turn to the Apple Support Communities for a solution. There is no solution from Apple, the community provides workarounds.
Up to then, one could at least argue that it's because of Apple that the availability of the workaround is known.
And then, someone within Apple decides it's better to censor this information discreetly. Without any explanation, that is both unacceptable and irrespectful and in my opinion bad business.
The app that was useful to me was: I E X P L O R E R from macroplant
I agree with what cakfr said: pathetic, evil behavior on Apple's part.
In case the name of the application is censored again even as catkfr spelled, it, its name is a combination of the letter that begins most popular Apple products followed by the name of the tree navigation system used in Windows OS, equivalent to (and in important ways better than) Finder in the Mac.
Nicely done. Also, the link in the pst by john_job entry feb 20, works even though the-application-that-shall-not-be-named shows up as asterisks.
But copying the link doesn't work, you have to click in his comment. In any case, macroplant.com has a small enough roster of apps that people should find what theyr'e looking for. Whoever said it was freeware though is not correct, at least not now.
I have an iPhone 5 and iTunes 11 on a MacBook pro (late 2011). Thankfully, the solution was simple but it has taken me hours of trial and error to find it. Going ITunes Preferences -> Devices -> Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically. Check the box for that last item and perform the sync again.
A sync takes a long time because it performs a backup as it does it. It is rediculuos that people have been having issues syncing voice memos with iTunes since 2010 and earlier. Just do a Google search. I doubt I'll buy an iPhone again. They generally are really good but not fixing sync for a three year period is an insult to the customer.
I have spent 75 minutes on the phone with apple support. The only thing they can tell me is that my files are corrupted. They had me do all kinds of resets and backups and basically nothing worked. In addition to all the wasted time I need to reinstall all my icons and reconfigure my VPN and various settings. All I wanted to do is copy a single voice memo from my phone to my Imac. My Iphone 5 is not jailbroken and I cannot figure out why they won't take responsibility for this issue. This is the worst customer service I have seen in a long long time. Comparable to United Airlines back in the day.
I have an Imac, Ipad, Macbook Air, and Nano. I have had every version of the Iphone back to the 3. I can honestly say that it will be highly unlikely I will be purchasing another Iphone going forward. At some point as a consumer I have a right to push back.
I used finder and went to folder for voicememo under itunes and moved everything out of there to another folder. then I went to the phone and opened each voicememo, clicked on trim, didn't do anything, waited a second, and then classified the memo into one of the categories.
After doing those two things on the phone, I resynced and the memos appeared in the finder folder under voice mails.
This whole process is ridiculous. I agree with above posts. This is a critical feature of the iphone and to just let it be botched up is consistent with the generally degraded performance of all apple software.
Another great American company gets eaten alive by hubris, poor management, and not being hungry.
I think I was one of the first to comment here, and giving some tips that did work for me, even if a bit confusing. Then things got more complicated, like seeing a 30 min voice memo showing up in iTunes (where I could play it but not delete), but nowhere appearing in the iPhone. Everybody here got really upset with Apple, after so many years no solution. So, I gave up and bought the software we are not allowed to talk about (cost me around USD 30). Call it eye-explorer. Now that was not only a solution, it was showing things were much much worse: it shows the Voice Memos but I also found another folder in the iPhone called "Recordings". The files are mostly .m4a, one is .mov. A total of 13 files totally hidden, old voice memos that were supposed to have been deleted more than a year ago. With the software I copied them to my MAC and then deleted them. So, if you think your problem is not being able to download your "existing" voice memos, it could be worse. I know it ***** we have to buy a software that we don't need in theory. What choice? As to avoid censorship, I am copying this and will publish on my blog.strategy4china.com later on.
