iTunes - Network Connection Time Out

I installed iTunes for the first time last week and it was working fine. I had some virus activity going on after the installation and after my antivirus software detected it, it seems to be gone. Then I had issues connecting to the internet with firefox and had to change my proxy setting. Since then, I have not been able to access the iTunes store. I am getting the following error message: iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. The network connection timed out. Here are the results from the diagnostic test:

Hi to all fellow sufferers 😟

I too am having the time out message, I am in the UK and I am on BT.

I have tried every one of the options for fixes mentioned here and on the itunes help/support site but nothing works.

I can donwload songs on my iphone (3GS) but nothing is downloading form the store on my XP operating software desktop pc.

I am particularly miffed about the fact that I have paid for a season pass which I now can't use. I'm worried that if I try to download the episodes using my iphone that I will be harged again for them.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how this could be fixed?

I think its more likely to do with one of the Windows updates, they always cause some error that takes ages to resolve...

thanks in advance 🙂

The support pages on the Apple website mention ports:

iTunes must be allowed to contact Apple using the following ports and servers:

* port 80
* port 443
* phobos.apple.com, deimos3.apple.com, albert.apple.com, gs.apple.com, itunes.apple.com, ax.itunes.apple.com

The support page does not say how to find the ports on the PC in order to check. I don't suppose anyone knows how to see these do they??

I tried to do a system restore, but this failed. I have tried two dates but neither worked.

The last time that I was able to download anything from the store was on the 14 Oct.

The message continues to say 'network connection error'. I am able to connect to the internet and view pages, download email, watch BBCiPlayer etc, I can even view the itunes store content - I just can't download anything.

I am getting very frustrated with this, it is a recurring problem following updates. My husband hasnt been able to get into the store for months since he downloaded a windows update and none of the fixes suggested or updates since have fsixed it.

Apple need to sort the problem out and take customer complaints and queries seriously, because they are surely losing revenue because people cannot buy anything in the store.

I have had a similar problem since about Oct 15th. Using my BT Homehub 1.5 I cannot access the iTunes store, or my account details, from my iPhone 3GS, Windows XP or Windows Vista computers. I CAN access my account and download from my iPhone on the O2 3G network! Another user - using the same Homehub, same computers and an iPhone 4 CAN access iTunes perfectly. I originally spoke to O2 as I thought it was a phone problem - until the computers also stopped working, O2 referred my to Apple who just reset the phone with no success. It's obviously not just me, but I'm not sure where to go now. It's ONLY iTunes that has the problems from my Homehub so it must be sometime Apple's end I hope. I also get the Time-Out message on computers and Fail To Connect on iPhone. Sorry I didn't have the answer - if I find it I'll post it.

Still no definitive answer as to how we resolve this problem.

I have now run out of options to try. I must say that I find it appalling that each company says its someone elses problem, that doesn't help at all. They won't work to find a fix until they accept that it could be their problem so the customer suffers yet again. We don't care where the problem is, we just want it fixed so that we can get back to normal. I have spent hours and hours on this now, perhaps I should send a bill for my time??

Thanks to everyone who keeps posting suggestions, between us we should get there in the end 🙂

If I find out more I will post it here.

I have had the same problem for a few days - itunes on OSX as well as on my iPhone over WiFi. The iPhone can access the store over 3G. I am on BT Broadband. Twice tonight I have tried connecting to the BTOpenzone hotspot at my house (BTFON). Both times I was able to access the itunes store. Returning to my own network results in the connection timeout errors. Has anyone else on BT seen this behaviour?

I just add my case to the list.
Cannot access Itunes Store through BT Home Hub or iPhone.
My apps are getting impatient to be updated.
I have a MacBook 13' and have tried everything for the last 3 days.
No one wants to help either BT or Apple and it is a matter of Pass the buck to someone else.
I bet they are waiting for one of us to find a solution to this and then post it as one of their own!!
