iPhone 4 mic only not working in phone app!

Hello

I have an iPhone 4 with iOS 4.1. Today people on the other end in calls couldn't hear me. Thought it was the mic that was broken but when using other applications like skype or voice recorder it works perfectly. I have tried to use the speaker and headset but it doesn't work in calls also, so i think this is a software error. Does anybody know how to fix this?

Hi, same problem here in Cyprus

My solution:

--Make a call to your device with mic problem from another telephone

--Answer it , hit the iphone slowly to somewhre next to the camera in front(that is where the 3rd mic is located inside).

--When it starts to work keep talking about 10 -15 saconds.

--Hang up the phone

--Do the same thing again.

--After 3rd or 4th call you will se that mic is working.

This will help you a little while, not forever.

Also if you have screwer , open backside of phone. Unscrew the long pin next t o the camera clean it and screw it again and close the phone..

HI All,

It is far easier than all suggestions below. I have had this issue over the past 2 years now and studied all solutions possbille.

However the ultimate solution is as simple as Steve coould have thought off.

Just stick a simple ear clearner cotton whiper into the aer phone connection hole to mke sure there is no moist left and the problem is over.

JUst as simple as that. I ha ve had teh issue many times now and my phone has been replaced a number of times ( which should not have happened when the staff were really trained) but this 'trick' does work.

Wow, Lapidarium! I've been sitting around all this time with a broken phone and not once had I thought of taking a Q-tip to it. I even unscrewed and took the whole thing apart. But I never had the insight, as you did, to simply make sure all of the moisture is out, using a cotton tipped stick. What other sure-fire solutions do you have for us?

My GF got the same problem on her 4G all of a sudden, no drops or anything!

This is a refurbished phone, replaced because the original got its on/off button stuck (dunno why we got an used scraped up phone in retur "refurbished")

Anyways, I now tried a bit. I called her broken phone from my working 4S, and I kept tapping the back of her phone, just beneath the secondary microphone, and talking, while listening in my phone - dead silent. I kept doing this for 30 sec, and suddenly I could hear my own voice clearer and clearer.

- It works again!

I tried a small smack against my hand to check if anything was loose, and if it would fall out again, but no, still working.

Tried redialing, no problem!

Anyone who can explain?(!!) Calibration or something?

Add me to the long list of people with a 'premium product'... My 4s is just one month out of the box and has the same snag. Though it is still under waranty, I won't be in a country where I can claim it for a few months, so I get to be annoyed by it for quite a while. My first iphone made it trouble free for about 15 months before it started giving me grief (different problem, no proximity sensor...) and I was dumb enough to buy a second one. I very much doubt I'll buy a third one.
