Did I say specifically that I decide that? No, I did not. I was just pointing out how it seems you just want to post to post and not want to help people with questions. I was just suggesting that maybe you should post something more helpful.

OK.
Only the carrier can unlock your phone 🙂
Is it possible to shift from one Apple recognized Wireless carrier(t-Mobile) from US to another Apple recognized Wireless carrier in India(Airtel).
T-Mobile in the US is not an authorized/supported carrier. No US sold iPhone is locked to T-Mobile.
There is no possible way to change the lock from one carrier to another. If the carrier offers unlocking (No US carrier does) get it unlocked.
Otherwise sell the device and buy one that can be used in the country where it is intended to be used.
Hello,
Is the following article about carrier unlock for iPhone inccorect?
I also have been using Apple products for a while and do not quite understand AT&T or Apples decision not to unlock old iPhones. It seem a bit unAmerican/anti-competitive to not offer an unlock after my contract is up hence I have the following questions:
1. What are they afraid of since the 3G only really works on the AT&T 3G in the USA?
2. What can I do with an old locked iPhone after I have upgraded? Since it is a GSM world phone why not unlock it and allow it to give it to my friend or family overseas?
That article is the only reference I've ever seen to that happening. I'd take it with a grain of salt. I seriously doubt that it is accurate.
1. As far as the decision not to unlock, Apple has nothing to do with it. It is entirely up to the carrier (AT&T). There is no law in the US requiring them to do so and there is no financial incentive to do so. It's not a matter of being afraid of anything other than losing money. AT&T shells out a fair bit of $$ to subsidise the cost of the phone. If they unlock it, it will most likely leave their network. If not, there is a fair chance it will be passed on or sold to someone who will continue to use their network and pay for the service.
As for question 2, see the answer to question 1, above.

"Go away"? Is that even a valid response KiltedTim? Like you, I am also just a user trying to help others with something I know about, so there is no need to be rude as in the other comments you have to others. We all would liked to be helped and help others. If you go online and do a search for this topic you will find more than one link in the USA. Although I am not saying that this is for certain, we should let the readers decide.
While I agree with you and mouse55 that carriers are not obligated to unlock any iPhone bought under their contract. Or Apple should unlock any locked iPhone that was not purchased through them originally unlocked. I am however confused about the following statements you have made:
1. "...there is no financial incentive to do so."
2. "...other than losing money."
They will lose money regardless when I upgrade. They can make more money if I give it to some else on AT&T. However they make this an really hard option since it will be under a new set of terms. So in this case no one benefits, only more e-waste. I am glad you like AT&T but if it was not for Apple's iPhone I might not go with AT&T. And currently it does not make sense to me unlock the iPhone if I only use it in the USA since there is no real competitors and I can go to "StaightTalk". Hence I agree with lildevil13.
They will not necessarily lose money when you upgrade. The phone can easily be sold or given to someon else on AT&T, which means that person will spend money on AT&T service. They don't care if you want to take it out of the country. They don't care if you want to use it on a different carrier. What you want to do is irrelevant.
What is relevant is that if it is going to be used, AT&T wants to make money on it.
Debating the pros and cons of whether or not any particular carrier is outside the scope of these forums and a terms of service violation.
Your repeated posting of the same link to the same unverified story in every thread you can find regarding unlocking is annoying and bordering on spam.
Arguing about it is not going to change reality.
Drop it.
Oh my! No no no...I deleted my comments for, well just becasue. They were not nasty, just decided not to add them. On that note I can tell you simply that IF an iPhone is bought unlocked and locks up, it can ALWAYS be unlocked. Just call Apple and they can look the iphone up if sold there to make sure it was unlocked. Ask for a phone specialist if they do not know what you are talking about. Also, I beleive AT&T is now doing it after you have had it for 6 months???? Beleive it or not, Apple does not act in a way where money talks or doing things for financial incentives. They bend over backwards to help weather the item was bought there or Target or Best Buy. It does not matter.

No. They do not.
Unlocking your iPhone in order to transfer service to another carrier
Consistent with the Terms & Conditions you agreed to when you signed up for service, AT&T customers cannot unlock their iPhone to work on another network. Unlike some of our major competitors, AT&T uses GSM technology. iPhones designed to work on AT&T's network will not work on another carrier's network.
Wow. Well, I am not going to argue which is sort of why I deleted my first comments. But, yes they do. All AT&T phones are also considered "world" phones. With has little to do with what I am saying - but after a certain amount of time, they will unlock it. And Verizon and will also do so at one point. So, beleive what you may but as others, I am conversing on her to give people information.
Well, it is insteresting that At&t wrote this because it is false. Other companies are also on the GSM system. They are not the only ones. Plus the iphones can work on different carriers.
My problem does not really have to do with At&t, they would make money if they or apple unlocked my phone cause then I would use their carrier system. As of now, I am thinking of canceling the contract I started because I can't use my iphone with it nor do they offer cheaper phones so I can use their service.
At&t and Apple would continue to make money and more if they unlocked phones. Leave the choice up to the customers and they can see they will get consumers. Its basic business and marketing. If at&t can't figure that out, than... well...
Apple would continue to make money if allowed all phones to be unlocked easily.
At&t is just scared that their consumers will disapear once they unlock the phones, which might be true to a point, but if they had good service then they wouldn't need to worry about that.
I'm sorry, but you don't know what you're talking about. You are badly misinformed.
AT&T will NOT unlock iPhones for anyone under any circumstances. The single story making the rounds about a customer supposedly contacing Tim Cook and having him intervene with AT&T is completely unsubstantiated, which is why you will not find it reported by any respectable news source. C-Net parroting back something they read on a blog does not mean it's true.
Verizon will unlock the SIM slot for international travel ONLY. A Verizon 4S becomes a brick without Verizon service (more accurately, it becomes an iPod Touch).
You are spreading false "information".
Show us proof if you insist it's true.
Apple has no say in the matter. If you don't like the fact that AT&T won't unlock it, call your congressman. Otherwise, your posting is completely out of line and a violation of the TOS here.
These forums are for technical support. NOT debating carrier policies regarding unlocking.
