How to Factory Unlock iPhone 4?

I bought an iPhone4 recently in the US, WITHOUT CONTRACT, but its still AT&T locked. I bought it AT FULL PRICE, so i practically have a VERY EXPENSIVE IPOD.... how can i contact Apple to unlock my iPhone4? it is not fair and even unconstitutional (since i paid full price).

Please reply ASAP.

Apple does has a say because they are the ones that brought up the contracts with At&t, if they were abel to make contracts without locking than we would be in a different boat now. This is why Apple does have a say. They are the manufacturers of the product and put in this locking system into place, most likely so that the service providers could hold onto their consumers longer.

Unlocking has been leagalized within the United States. I remember when it came about. My posting is not out of line and it is NOT in volation of TOS. If you think it is than please inform us of the violation and post it on the site. I will then post that I have freedom of speech.

Yes these are for technical support and we have been asking for it, you have also gotten involved within the debates as we are trying to figure out WHY Apple and At&t would put the run around on us.

If you don't like the talks, then don't get involved.

No one has ever stated that unlocking a device is illegal.

What has been stated hundreds, if not thousands, of times is that legally carriers are not required to unlock devices.

The carrier the device is the only entity that can officially unlock/request the unlock. Not all carriers offer unlocking... this is a cold, hard fact. Like it or not, there is nothing that anyone here can do about it.

If the user wants/needs an unlocked device, then they need to either purchase one unlocked initially or purchase one that can be officially unlocked.

THe carrier I had was in Japan and they told me that I could get it unlocked once I came to america. SO saying that only the carrier you had can unlock it is not true either. Its not like I can go to them now that I am in America and ask them to unlock my phone, the carrier is Japanese!

You either misunderstood, or they lied to you. The Japanese carriers do NOT unlock iPhones. You can NOT get it unlocked by another carrier.

Hello lildevil13,

In some sense I agree with you. If you operate mainly in the USA besides MVNO such as StraightTalk there are no real feasible carriers. The only advantage to a locked iPhone would be to prevent the illegal export of it. And when the contract is up the phone should be not as popular. Unlike other providers they do not really have competitors in the USA so why not improve upon service, instead of force, to keep or attract customers. As the old adage states:

"It is easier to attract bears with honey than with flies."

Are you a lawyer? Do you have access to the contracts in question? Didn't think so.

No one said it was illegal. It can NOT be discussed here, however.

Submissions

Stay on topic. Apple Support Communities is here to help people use Apple products and technologies more effectively. Unless otherwise noted, do not add Submissions about nontechnical topics, including:

  1. Speculations or rumors about unannounced products.
  2. Discussions of Apple policies or procedures or speculation on Apple decisions.

I will then post that I have freedom of speech.

No. You do not have "freedom of speech". These forums are sponsored by Apple. Assuming you are a U.S. Citizen, the First Amendment to the Constitution refers to political speech. Even that does not apply in a forum such as this. This has been decided by the courts and is well established.

we are trying to figure out WHY Apple and At&t would put the run around on us.

As already cited in the reference to the terms of use above, "Discussions of Apple policies or procedures or speculation on Apple decisions" are prohibited.

Why is a question that can not be asked or answered here.

Drop it.

I think you are threatened by me?

WIth your comments to keep me quiet show this. If you want it dropped, then well.... don't respond.

First off, don't assume that I am not a lawyer, are you one? didn't think so.

Second of all. Yes someone said that it was illegal. And YES it can be discussed here.

As, it states in your submission to stay on topic, we are doing so. You are the one the brought up procedures and policies of At&t and I brought up Apple's previous decisions, not speculation on decisions to come. I have not commented on their current ppolicies or procedures, just on ones that have already been made.

This is not a violation of their policies on submissions.

Freedom of speech is not just on political speech it has to do with other speech as well.

If you want it to be dropped... then don't respond, but you are obviously not trying to help anyone nor let things go yourself. If you don't want to be part of it, then opt out of the thread.

No, I'm not threatened by you.

I have a law degree, but do not practice.

No, it can NOT be discussed here.

You are NOT on topic. The topic is a question of how to unlock an iPhone. If you have an iPhone locked to AT&T, it can NOT be legitimately unlocked. Why is not relevant.

I was not debating AT&T's policy, I merely stated fact in answer to the question posed. AT&T will NOT unlock iPhones.

Fine, freedom of speech also includes religious speech. It's irrelevant. Neither applies here.

Apr 1, 2012 7:36 PM in response to lildevil13

You said that the statement that "only the carrier can unlock the phone" was untrue.
False.
ONLY the carrier can unlock it. It's perfectly true.

On a technicality, to whoever got their phone unlocked at the Genius Bar, that is only because they purchased one factory unlocked and needed a replacement. So the carrier's authorization is required for a locked phone to become unlocked.

you are threatened by me, if you weren't than you wouldn't continue to resond to my responses.

So anyone who responds to you is threatened by you? Ridiculous.
