iPhone 4 Power Button Stuck

Out of the blue today the power/lock button on my iPhone 4 became completely unresponsive. It doesn't seem to be jammed and it actually seems to be loose and a bit wiggly. Now I can't restart my phone and I can't lock it. I was wondering if this was a common problem with other iPhone 4 units and what would be the best way to go about getting it fixed. I got this phone from a friend about a month ago who had only used it for about two months before switching to a different phone. Prior to receiving this phone I had been using an iPhone 3G for two years with no problems whatsoever. This iPhone 4 has not been dropped or exposed to water or humidity of any kind. Thanks in advance!

Buddy.. we're writing all these comlplaints on the Apple support Forum. Dont you think they already know there's a problem. What's more they've changed the way the power button is fitted on the Iphone 4S so that this problem does not occur. They really dont care about all of us crying ourselves hoarse about this or they would have done something a long time ago. A lawsuit is the only way apple can be made to pay for selling the iphone 4 with a faulty design.

My power button stopped working this week, out of the blue. Same symptoms mentioned in this thread. No click, just a mushy feeling, not working. I got it launch day (June 2010) so it's three weeks shy of two years old. No AppleCare, no SquareTrade warranty, either. And I'm comfortably jailbroken too -- and certainly didn't want to go through the hassle of restoring all of my software to "troubleshoot" this known issue.

I skimmed this thread and rather than get all up in arms, joining any class action lawsuits or whatever, or dealing with the "Genius" Bar and attempting to wrestling with crowds/lines at the Apple Store... begging for some attention... I went to a little shop not to far from me (breakifix.com) and got it fixed for $60. Took 30 minutes, and the repair has a 90-day warranty. Now it's like new. No muss, no fuss. I'm happy.

The same thing just happened to me last week out of the blue...didn't drop the phone or anything, the power button just stopped responding ,it's not stuck or anything. Luckily my warranty isn't up until next month. My question is when I go to the Apple store and if they replace my phone, do I lose everything I currently have on my phone, old texts and stuff? My apps, videos, photos, and songs are synced but would love to be able to keep some of my text chains. Any way of syncing those?

I too just encountered this issue this week. I bought the iPhone 4 the first day it was out and have never had issues with it. It is out of warranty and have no expectations of Apple repairing this piece. I could do it myself, however, I believe I will be switching to a different phone, as it is frustrating to see so many issues without a resolution.

I too am having this problem and am out of warranty. Since this seems to be a common problem, I encourage you to provide feedback to apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/. This is the complaint that I filed, and I encourage more of you to do the same.

"To whom it may concern,

I recently had the power/standby/sleep button on my iPhone 4 (Verizon model) become stuck. As I purchased my phone in the initial release of iPhones in February of last year, my warranty is no longer in effect. I am extremely disappointed in how your company has handled the repair, or lack thereof, of this problem. The replacement cost (with a refurbished iPhone) quoted to me by both apple phone support and the apple store was $150. I find it completely absurd that you would be charging this much for me to fix a button that at most costs a couple of dollars.

Furthermore, I find it even more upsetting that I found that I am far from the only one with this problem. I direct your attention to the following thread on the apple support community:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2713539

You will see that there are 161 replies and well over 100,000 views. This leads me to believe that this is not rare occurrence. Although I realize this is a small percentage of the iPhones that you have sold, it is NOT insignificant.

I urge you to look into this matter soon to avoid more disgruntled customers.

Sincerely,

Thomas Kennedy"

Hopefully enough complaints might encourage apple to come up with an alternative solution.

Sadly, my out of warranty iPhone 4 also recently fell to this issue and I couldn't be more disappointed with Apple's response. The unit is in pristine condition and has suffered no trauma. In fact, it has been protected in an Otter Box case and aside from the broken power button, you wouldn't be able to tell it from new.

Hoping for a repair I went to the Apple store today to see a genius but once I told the greeter the issue I was quickly ushered to a non technical rep who conferred with folks in the back room. They said that this is first they have seen of this issue (blatant lie) but they were 100% sure that the Otter Box case was the cause of the problem. They offered to replace the phone for $150 for a refurb with a 90 day warranty - I declined the offer.

This is an easy fix for any worthy technician and I think it's absolutely an abomination that Apple won't fix the phones, wont recognize this obvious defect, blames others for their defects, and expects good customers to pay for thier defects.

Mine is an AT&T iPhone 4 bought on launch day but I see by the above thread that 4s phones are also starting to crop up with this issue so, aside from failing to publicly acknowledge the defect, apparently the gurus at Apple still don't have a permanent fix either!
