Iphone 3G wont turn on past apple logo! Please help!

It froze after attempting to delete my facebook app and I turned it off, tried to turn it back on and it wont boot past the apple logo screen. Ive googled the problem and I found that I needed to reset my phone by holding down the power and the home button (which I did) and plug into my computer while holding down the home button then a "connect to itunes" screen would pop up. Well, I did this successfully and Itunes said it had to download a new update for the phone. while downloading, the apple screen went off and the screen went black, Im assuming it turned off and when I tried to get it to the "connect to Itunes" screen again it wouldnt. I continued the process again and now it still wont get to the "connect to Itunes" screen and will only show the apple logo screen. I tried calling apple support and they want $30 just to talk to them. No thanks. Please help me. I have no idea what else to do.

PS...I am not tech-savvy and Im not great on understanding computer talk.

See if you force the phone into recovery mode:

Turn off your phone: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the the iPhone to turn off. If you cannot turn off your phone using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When your phone turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons. Then, leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, itunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new. After restoring from backup, you must sync to restore your iTunes content.

Same thing happened to me. I updated my facebook app a couple days ago. The update would get past the facebook logo screen. I noticed in iTunes that there was another update to fix that problem. All I had to do was uninstall facebook, then install the new version. Well, after I deleted facebook, my phone was running very, very slow. So I decided to restart my phone, and now it won't go past the logo screen, then turns off. I had a feeling it wouldn't turn back on... I shouldn't have turned it off. I have the original iPhone unlocked and jailbroken. Not sure what to do now. Facebook is definitely to blame.. they are breaking all of our phones!!

Same thing happened my GF's phone after updating facebook app. Thanks to the help posted here the phone is almost restored. Doing its final check now. Funny she called the people at Apple and the couldn't help her. All they wanted was the serial number on the phone which is impossible to read on that little sim car holder frame.

I am afraid that Apple is going down a very slippery slope.

I had the same problem.

This is what you need to do.

Do as what wjosten has said in the previous thread.

When the iphone goes blank... this is what you need to do.

1. Unhook your iphone

2. Plug your iphone into a wall charger --> this will bring up the apple logo

3. Unplug from the wall charger

4. Wait until the Apple logo goes away (not sure if this is necessary..but this is what I did)

5. Reconnect to your computer.

6. It will ask the same question about how you need to "restore"... just say yes...since iTunes is already downloading, it won't do much.

7. You may have to repeat steps 2-6 if the screen goes blank before the update is fully downloaded.

8. When the update software is full downloaded, just click update...

9.. The rest...you just click away...
