I have similar issue.
When somebody calls me, although I have his number saved in iPhone Contacts, Contact name is not displyed but only number.

Strange thing is that when I check Recent calls (log) later, contact name is properly displayed.

Number displayed when receiving the call is completely the same as one saved in my contacts ('+', spaces, everything the same).
Also I dont have duplicate contacts with the same number.

iPhone is new and just activated.

Thanks for the post, Marwan! It worked great to fix my recent calls in my phone app. Now the problem is that in Messages, my recent texts are listed by number even though they appear in my contacts. Even "updating existing contacts" doesn't fix the texts in that list. Before calling *228 to fix my phone contacts this wasn't an issue. I have tried restarting the phone and deactivating and then reactivating iMessage, but nothing has brought the names back to my message app. Suggestions, anyone?

Thanks!

HERE IS THE FIX!!! ---I've been posting this everywhere in an effort to get this solution out. Please re-post this on other forums so we can stop this problem 🙂

Okay, here is how you fix this problem:

STEP 1. First you have to dial *228 on your iPhone 4S. You should note that *228 is a Verizon over-the-air programming number.

STEP 2. Wait for sometime until the system responds, then you have to press “1″ to “Program or activate your phone”.

STEP 3. After sometime the system will say, “Settings updated”. Then you have to wait until the call disconnects.

STEP 4. Now double click the Home Button of your iPhone 4S to open the Task Manager.

STEP 5. Now close Phone, Message, and Contacts Applications on your iPhone 4S.

STEP 6. After waiting for five minutes, open the Message App on your iPhone 4S to check the fix.

That’s it. In this way you can fix iOS 5.0.1 contact bug on your iPhone 4S. If you are not able to fix this issue after using the above steps then again you have to close the Message App and restart your iPhone 4S. It is expected that soon Apple will release iOS 5.0.2 to fix this issue.

Pity your solution only solves the problem with phones on Verizon. We are quite a few with the same problem outside the US with unlocked phones on carriers who are not partners with Apple. I fixed mine by downgrading back to 4.3.5 as I was quick enough to do so before Apple stopped signing this level.

With no acknowledgement from Apple that this problem exists, I am not optimistic that there ever will be a fix for this problem.

Marwan1981 you are awesome! This glitch has irritated the heck out of me. My recent call history and text message recipient name would show number only. It happened after i restarted my iphone. I called the verizon *228 activation # and selected option # 1 as Marwan1891 has suggested. After that was complete I cancelled the phone, message, and contact apps open in the task manager. Went back into my recent call history and all the phone numbers were repopulated with my contact names. Thanks Marwan1981

By the way if you are not sure where the task manager is you double click on your iphones home button twice and the task manager box appears from bottom of screen. touch and hold one of the app icons for a second or two and then you have option to cancel one or all open tasks.
