Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners - defective?

Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.

Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.

Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.

It looks like the brightness is just set a lot lower on the "samsung" one -- also btw how do they KNOW it's a samsung display inside there? Going by the serial number or something? I think we need some more information here. AFAIK and from what I've heard so far the only way to know if it's a samsung display inside your ipad2 is to crack it open, and I don't see that being done in that photo.

They knew about the problem and shipped the devices with defective displays...that alone should tell you how honorable Apple is. We were all barking at foxconn and blaming Q&A -- but that had nothing to do with it...LG told apple that the displays were defective, apple chose to use and ship them anyways!

Foxconn were under orders to ignore the problem and ship anyways.

wow so I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me but I'm glad someone else noticed it. I'm the one who posted on here with pictures that I exchanged my defective light bleeding iPad 2 and they got it right on the first swap well that was just this last week. So I reported getting one with no light bleed, but I did notice the yellowish tint around the borders of the screen and didn't seem as vibrant of contrast as my original (LG screen) ipad 2. it mostly shows up on pages that are viewed in white. It didn't bother me a whole lot but at times I do look at the screen like this doesn't look right. But im just going to suck it up and face the fact that it is what it is and this thing may never be perfect but I would choose no other product made out there over it. I am a little disapointed in apple for letting things fall under the radar on this make and hopefully they can get production of future products back to the perfect products were used to seeing released from apple. Right now its a lose lose situation on getting "The Perfect" screen but if your not so nit picky you will learn to deal with it, understanding that this never should happen in the first place, but what can you do. Deal with it or return it and get your money back or in store credit and wait for a hoepfully flawless ipad 3???


Now someone else asks do we even know if in fact these are samsung replacements? I would assume that they are since this is the difference showing up between the two and samsung is known for it according to dxironman. But no one will know that until someone takes it apart and verifys that is in fact a samsung screen.

I am not too entirely convinced that this is just a samsung screen! The very first iPad 2 that I got last month had terrible light bleeding and it's screen was a dingy yellow (one of the first iPad 2s). I compared it to all the other screens I had seen, especially on the black units. They had nice cool tones and mine was an icky yellow tone.


I used to tear down my Palm PDAs. When I did screen replacements I discovered a love for Samsung over other products because the Samsung screen was more blueish the other was a Sony and it was more yellowish.


None of this may be relevant at all but I am wondering why you are all so quick to jump the gun if you have no idea what the actual panel below all the glass actually says who manufactured it???


Not only this but when I learned that Apple was using LG I nearly freaked out! Every LG product I have ever had either explodes or stopped working in a very sad period of time lol


Old LG was a different story. I have dinosaur phones that were dropped in sinks and toilets and they are still going! But other than that I am insulted and horrified by their quality control!

The LG panel in my 2009 Macbook Pro is excellent. No light leaks, uniform brightness and pretty accurate color rendition. For those criticizing LG, I don't think you should condemn a manufacturer's entire product line by looking at one model. The comparison photos of the two screens are taken somewhat off-axis. Are there any photos that show both screens where the camera is directly in front of them? The replacement panel may have less of a viewing angle.

Both LG and Samsung are great display makers. IIRC the display being used in my IPS Dell UltraSharp U2410 is actually made by LG -- and it's amazing. LG made the iPad 1st gen screens -- mine has no problems at all.

It's not fair say they suck because of this -- it's Apple's fault anyways -- they knew the screens were defective but shipped the products anyways. Blame Tim Cook, not LG.


Anyways, regarding the photo -- where did it come from? What site? And the questions I asked before still stand...How do they _know_ for sure the one on the right is a samsung display and the one on the left is LG? According to engadget the only way you can tell is to tear down the device. And good point about them being off axis...Camera could be causing the differences not the actual displays. But what about the brightness settings as well? (on the ipad 2's)


Would be nice to get a source \ link for that photo + a credible article saying how they know for sure the right one is made by samsung.


BUT -- let's say it is true...what would you rather have? Yellow blotches on dark content or a "washed out" screen? I'll take the "washed out" screen for 200 alex.


I think all of this is irrelevant anyways...LG said they fixed the problem so new iPad 2's with fixed LG displays should be here soon.


Man this is seriously one of the worst product launch botches in Apple history, I gotta say.

Well, I finally went into the Genius Bar today after hearing some stories of successful replacements here on this thread. I bought my iPad 2 on launch day and noticed the leaking immediately. They had to order me a replacement. Now I'm nervous, though, from some of the posts from yesterday and today? Dingy, yellow screens?? I definitely don't want that. My current display looks fantastic, except for the ugly blotches on dark backgrounds.

I can understand your concern bud, I too took mine in today and they ordered me a replacement.

(Due to arrive in a few days according to Apple staff).


I was told however if I was not happy with the new replacement model I could simply opt for a refund if the new one is not up to my standards.


Then I could simply buy one in the near future when the new batch's have arrived. 🙂

Interesting. Here in the states, we only have 14 days to get a refund or, by some reports 30 days if the refund is due to a manufacturing defect (called DOA). I'm outside of that window, as I got mine on March 11, but well within the warranty period. I just hope they'll let me try and compare them in the store. If the new one still has light bleed and is yellow and dimmer, I don't want to take it.

We get 28 days however im assuming because this is a factory defect that it wavers it slightly.


I purchased mine on the 25th (UK release date), So its over a month now but that was genuinely what I was told by the Genius bar staff member as well as Apple Care helpline before I went.


We have the usual 1 year warranty as standard.

I called Applecare about mine and they had me restore my iPad for some reason which I knew wasn't going to help solve my light leakage. So the guy made a genius bar appointment for me at my local store. Of course when I got there I was given a pat answer that my light leakage was to be expected since it was an led screen. I told her well why isn't it uniform all the way around the screen then. She offered me a replacement but she told me that it would look exactly the same. I asked her if I come back in a few weeks when they've got this screen issue cleared up and she said that was okay but now I'm worried that there just going to give me trouble when I go in again. They didn't even offer to order me a replacement. I gotta say I'm a little miffed about all this. If I knew all this was going to happen I would have returned it for a refund when I was still in my 14 day return period.
