What i have noticed after installing systeminfo on my 3GS is after the phone running for a day using apps...etc

is that memory usage is down to 10mb and after a reboot it goes up to 118mb.

So maybe it could be a memory thing. Lack of memory during call would make it reboot maybe.

Just a thought i had may be irellivant.

So gonna try a few calls directly after a soft reboot, Will let you know.

Although i don't know what can be done to optimize the memory

Hi all,

Since my last posting I've been contacted by a large number of folk asking if I can provide details on how to cure their reboot issue. At the current time this remains something I'm still in a position to do, so if you're trawling through the Apple forum, see this thread and want help then check out my profile and drop me an email.

This is effectively a little 'bump' so the thread/awareness doesn't die 🙂

A small, useful bump 🙂

Each day I'm contacted by a fair number of people asking if I can provide details on how to cure their reboot issue. At the current time this remains something I'm still in a position to do. The fix routine focuses primarily on the reboot during calls problem. If you have other reboot/issues then you can still try but please be aware you may lack success.

If you want help then check out my profile and drop me an email. I will try to respond in a timely manner but I just ask you to consider that I'm a busy fellow.

Regards,

Jonty 😀

Hi Phunkhead et al,

The fix is compatible with all flavours of iOS 4.x, right up to and including the current 4.3.3. The fix details I've compiled and send out are tailored for 4.2.1 but do now reference other versions of 4.x and additional steps you may need to take. Incidentally I recently updated to 4.3.3 and whilst I found Safari much faster, wireless was unreliable. After a bit of study I found numerous references to wireless issues with 4.3.3 across the entire iRange, so I'm back with 4.2.1 again which is solid.

It's also worth me re-capping again that the fix details are specific to the reboot during calls problem, and not other reboot problems. Whilst it's definately worth a try, a few have contacted me with additional reboot issues and the fix doesn't appear to be a winner, which would imply the battery itself is defective. I'm confident the reboot during calls (only) fault is due to battery logic/circuits which aren't compatible with iOS 4.

Here's a possible solution from one of the staff of the Munich Apple store which at least helped me after weeks of crashed calls after some 5 minutes.

According to him, the problems are due to too many apps running in the background - a problem which only occurs with multitaksing (iOS 4 and newer) - because all apps stay open in the background, once they're started.

And even when the phone reboots, the apps open before the reboot are reopened when booting - so no way of closing them.

Here's how to do that manually:

- double click on home (makes appear the slider with all open apps)

- hold one of the icons for 2 or 3 seconds

- all the icons show the delete symbol in the upper left corner and start shaking

- now you can close them one by one by clicking on the delete symbol

- now you may reboot the device once and check by doubleclicking home again that no app is running in the background anymore

Now you might repeat this procedure from time to time or when the "reboot on call" issue reappears.

This completely solved this problem for me. Let me know if it does for you.

I have now been to the apple store 3 times with this same problem. what you have just said does not work (for me at least) I went to the apple store and asked for them to re download the operating system for me, apparantely this can only be done in tha apple store, without a considrable amount of effort. doing this has helped a lot.it only took 10 minutes, i can now make much linger calls.

i was also told it might stop it if your mobile data is turned on, SETTINGS, GENERAL, NETWORK....
