Hi all,

I can confirm that I had already tried clearing down the recently used applications list and this did not work for me.

Only by replacing the mobilewatchdog file did the problem go away. You'd need to jailbre4k (4=a) your 'phone to get root access to the 'phone, so you can put the file in the correct folder., if you're going down this route.

I downloaded/used R3dsnow_win_0.9.6rc9.zip (3=e) (untethere_d) with iTunes 10.2.1, when my 'phone was on 4.3.1 and my J_B 'phone now shows as version 4.3 (BF190). Can't remember all the details of what I did, but it was relatively straightforward, apart from a bit of messing around using Windows Task Manager in an Admin user. I am a Windows 7 (x64) user.

There are plenty of guides and tutorials on the web for this - Google "iphone 4.3 jailbre4k" (4=a) for a starters.

Haven't tried Apple's 4.3.3 yet: I just don't want to risk it, in case my 'phone breaks again

I don't get it. If the problem is as simple as replacing a watchdog file, then why hasn't it been fixed yet?! I mean, it may a bit of a hassle for us, jailbreaking and all, but for Apple engineers, updating the watchdog time out timer with a new release of iOS, what's the problem? (Apparently, the problem is still in iOS5 beta 1...)

Hi to all,

Effectively this is a thread bump, just to make sure the crucial/inspirational thread behind this issue stays on the back burner at least (even though Apple turned this part of the original into a Part II).

To date I've helped 400+ 3GS owners resolve their 'rebooting during calls' problem, and I'm still in a position to do so. Whether you're running an older iOS such as 4.2.1 or the current 4.3.3 then I can help, and all you need to do is check out my profile and contact me directly via email. I'm happy to offer help because I want to and can, that's all.

Best regards,

Jonty.

Hi Phunk,

The fix is compatible with all versions of iOS 4.x, and there's only a few subtle differences to the method if you're running 4.2.1 versus other 4.x versions.

I have tried 4.3.3 but immediately was stricken with the wireless issue that seems to affect all iDevices. If you use Google you should be able to find lots of information about it. Due to this, I reverted back to 4.2.1 because it works absolutely fine for me. As well as bug fixes, 4.3.3 sees Safari work much, much faster (just a shame wireless was unstable!)

Personally I would suggest to anyone that if your 3GS (or any gizmo for that matter) is working with no issues then there really is no reason to change it and risk new problems.

Regards to all,

Jonty.

Hey Jonty,

I have an iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.0.1 and been using it for an year now. Never had any problems with it but my iPhone randomnly restarts now. This started happening like 2 weeks ago and it has restarted 4 times in the past 2 weeks. 2 out of 4 times it was during a call, while other times it was just during normal time, not even during heavy apps. I was wondering if that sounds like an issue to you and should I be worried about it? I already have emailed you. Waiting for your reply.

I am having this problem as well, I've got iphone 3gs 16gb, I had my original Iphone replaced from apple genius bar last march because of different fault, so right now I am out of the 90days warranty.

I have been to the apple genius bar regarding this fault, but theyre not much of a help, all I was asking was to provide me a proof that this fault is inherent, so that I can ask my retailer to repair/replace the phone for free.

Can anyone tell me what is causing this fault? because when I went to apple genius bar when they tried the iphone, the fault did not appear. I explained to them that it does not always happen.

When the iphone restarts during calls like after 5mins, the history of that call will not register to the iphone, so I showed them my o2 call history and my iphone call history, and it was clearly showing that there are some phone calls lasting about 5-7mins missing in the iphone. Their response was "What does it prove?". I do not understand why theyre called genius bar, when they cannot use their common sense.

I have been testing how often the phone will restart during phone calls, I have made 5 incoming calls and 5 receiving all lasting not more than 10mins, the phone restarted 3x out of 10calls. I tested this inside the house with the signal playing at 0-3bars.

I need some advice on how can I make the fault appear when I go to apple ***** bar again

Thank you!!

Up until a week ago I was seriously threatening to stamp on my iPhone because my calls were being cut due to the problem everyone in this forum seems to be having. Obviously I stopped myself from doing it because it cost me an arm and leg to buy the sodding thing in the first place

I decided to go down the route of asking Jonty for his advice and his fix has totally worked for me!!!

I can now have limitless conversations without the dreaded apple of death appearing on my phone for a minute whilst I swore and curse at it as it rebooted.

I didn't want to jailbreak my phone but Apple gave me little choice.

To anyone out there that is having problems, I recommend you try Jonty's solution.

The instructions he gives are clear and easy to follow.

Thanks Jonty for your help.

Thanks for the feedback and the kudos. The thread 'bump' is also extremely valuable so that all this important info doesn't vanish into the shadows.

As things stand Apple is currently on iOS 4.3.5 but which still does not correct the issue. For anyone reading this and thinking of trying 435 just in case I would strongly suggest you HALT... and instead nose into my profile and drop me a couple of lines via email.

At this time of writing I'm still happy and able to share some good advice on how you can attempt to fix your rebooting problem. I do it because I want to and I can, nothing else. To date I've helped in excess of 500 people fix their 3GS rebooting issue. But there has also been a handful (literally) of folk where the fix hasn't worked (but it's transpired there have been other issues, e.g. faulty iPhone, battery, whatever). I've also had one gentleman accuse me of emailing nothing but 'spam'. I'm no betting man but 500+ versus 1 doesn't seem bad to me! 😀

All the best to you all.

That is so undemocratic!

Maybe you should post the solution on my website? I could then post a link on the Apple forum pertaining To be about something else.. By the time the admins cotton on, Google would have it their cache, and then it would be Internet history!! And judging from the lack of response from Apple representatives to discussions on this forum, I doubt anyone would notice!

I would be inclined to go with the theory that the update exposed a hardware fault in some phones?

I had a similar thing happen with a piece of RME pro audio gear. Once the firmware was upgraded noise and didtortion apeared when recording at a sample rate of 96k. Even a firmware downgrade wouldn't Fix it.. The only solution was to send the unit back to the factory for a hardware mod..

Hi Paul,

Undemocratic..? With respect, this sharing of information on my part is through choice alone and not expectation. I don't work for a government, nor Apple, therefore my chosen method of communication is entirely my right and thus not up for discussion nor subject to a poll. Should I have wanted to post details of my fix information onto a website then I would have uploaded to my own, however I favour the more personal touch and exchange of dialogue that email has to offer. I don't take credit for the fix but I do take credit for the time and effort I have invested in perfecting the information I offer, therefore how I choose to distribute it is not for debate.

I am of the opinion that the issue is based on iOS 4.x being incompatible with the logic/circuitry in certain models of batteries. No-one ever had the issue with OS 3.x yet it appeared with iOS 4. This is drawn from extensive feedback and testing. On the few ocassions the fix hasn't worked it's transpired the battery has been defective and needed to be replaced. Of course this is just my opinion.

Best regards,

Jonty.
