I had the same problem with my 3GS; all was well with ios3, upgraded to ios4 and I could not make a call longer than 5-7 mins. Having lost hope Apple would solve the problem with it's upgrades, I tried the replacement of the watchdog file and it works like a phone again, no more resets!

I had some trouble copying the file, somehow I had different rights using mac and pc. I could not copy to the root using mac, it worked perfectly with iPhoneBrowser on pc. Thanks all for sharing your advice!!

I had the same problem and as im a Vodafone customer with insurance i thought they might fix the issue apperently not they told me to go to Apple as they have no idea how to fix it. Off to Apple i went and told them at the bar about the problem and what Vodafone said with that the swapped out the phone free of charge even though it was out of warrenty. Im now running iOS 4.3.3 and it works fine not had one cut out since.

I suggest people take a trip to the apple bar and explain the problem,

worked for me,

makes a change 😉

I removed Skype from my 3GS (iOS 4.3.5) and it still reboots after about 5 minutes, but only when I'm on the 2G network. Im on O2 in the UK and have 3G coverage at work and have made calls of over 60 minutes but at home on 2G, with the 'o' displayed by the network operator, it always reboots after briefly showing the battery with 0% charge.

So, if you're still having the problem, try checking it in 3G / 2G networks and see if it is the same as me.

Time for me to chip in again...

If you're still getting phone call reboots with your 3GS running iOS 4.x then I can send you some fix details if you email me. You can find my email address in my profile.

More importantly, it appears that iOS 5 does NOT address the reboot issue still. In addition, the file which can be replaced in iOS 4.x which fixes the problem does not exist in iOS 5, therefore at the present time there is no fix. So for those running 4 I can probably still help. If you've upgraded to 5 then I'm afraid all is lost (for now).

I changed the battery in my 3GS and then made a 15 min call..thought id finally fixed the problem. Then just made a 3 min call and my old friend the apple logo appeared on the screen...so I hadnt fixed anything.

And further kick in the nuts is that I had upgraded to iOs5 so looks like I am stuffed now, either buy new phone or make do with one that cant make a call over a minute!!

great stuff....

Im wondering if iOS5 causes the same calls drops on 3GS devices?

My current 3GS still is on 4.2.1 but i'd love to upgrade to iOS5 and start with no backup restore, just a clean phone.

If i should restore as new phone, will that take me back to the OS which was on the device when i bought it, or just the latest installed OS?

It would appear that iOS 5 does NOT cure the reboot during calls problem, or at least those who have tried have reported back this bad news. And if you should restore your iPhone then iTunes will want to update it to the latest version, so 4.2.1 will be replaced with 5 (as Apple do not support older versions of the iOS). Therefore if you have got your 3GS working nicely then, "If it ain't broke......"

Hi,

Just some feedback. I have had the "reboot after 10 mins" prob whcih is the subject of this thread, quite regularly from about a year ago or more. Right now it seems to have gone away. I'm on iPhone 3GS, puchased March 2010, IOS 4.3.5. I read a post which said that Skype could be the problem, so took that off, made lots of test calls for 15 mins, all ok (I'm on an unlimited plan, Mr Vodafone has sacrificed his profit this month for the common good), then installed Skype again, more test calls, all ok, then used Skype for some calls, left it active, made more 15 minute test calls, all ok. So right now all is ok. The only common factor which might be relevant is 4.3.5, which (in my case) may have fixed something.

Mr Jonty kindly supplied his fix instructions, but I decided not to proceed. The 10 minute drop-out was only a real problem on calls to Call Centres etc where it's impossible to get back to the same person.

I think I'm not going to upgrade to IOS5, the 3GS is already jerky sometimes with IOS4 and I don't want to burden it with smoothly zooming my GUI -and- maintaining a phone call. Unless someone posts that IOS5 has fixed the reboot problem, but Jonty & others have already posted that it doesn't.

I would say the best advice lately was from the person who said just go to your Apple Store and ask for a swap, on the basis that's it's a battery issue, or whatever you want to say. They are pretty good with that sort of stuff, I have used that approach with some Mac issues, and got a new keyboard, new battery. They have their "Genius Bar" and their experts in blue T-shirts, which is all very swish but the downside for Apple is if you corner a Genius and say my iProduct doesn't work, and spiel off a list of issues and how much time you've wasted on it, they are under heavy pressure to offer you a swap just to get rid of you.
