I've been thinking, the cause of this problem is supposedly hardware, right? The fact that the phone doesn't reboot when placed on the table while calling, as noted by myself and others in this thread, suggests the proximity sensor. I see these light and proximity sensor flex cables go for very little money on ebay, and they're not hard to replace. Just a thought though. As my 3GS works fine as it is, I can't be bothered to test this theory, restoring and all that. Although I very much would like to try iOS 5. It may be a last resort for those that have accidentally upgraded to iOS 5 and are now stuck with a device that is essentially useless as a telephone.

Hi all. Have a 3GS 5 weeks old, rebooting on calls, did all resets etc, eventually went to apple who swapped it out. Brand new phone 2 days old, rebooting during calls. IOS5 installed and this still happens, Very un happy with this product. Going back to O2 today, want a Iphone 4 or 4S or cancel contract, will see what happens. Is anyone aware of this issue with the 4 or 4S ??

SOLVED FOR ME - I THINK

I have been suffering with resets after 5 minutes for the last year. It had become unusable as a phone. Apple just said do a restore AGAIN. I thought perhaps iOS 5 might sort it but unfortuanely not. Then I read somewhere about a possible memory leak on an unknwn app, that ***** memory when you think it is off. I suspected Skype which was a common denominator it a lot of replies. I had far too many apps on my phone so I deleted all that I hadn't used for a month including skype. After a week of testing the phone is not now rebooting. Wonderful I can use it as a phone again.

Hope that helps.

Hi Marty,

Good for you that the problem seems to be solved on your phone. However, I don't think that Skype is the evil App that causes this particular problem: I am having reset problems as well and I have never used Skype. And yes, the problems are still there in iOS5, although I have the feeling that it is a bit better than with iOS4...

I had the rebooting problem for over a year now - and boy was it annoying (I almost bought an android phone because of that issue).

My experience is that skype is indeed the culprit.

Just a short "suffer-report":

Since iOS 4 my 3Gs kept rebooting during 4-5 minutes calls.

My hope was that iOS 5 would change that - but nope, it didn't change anything.

Than there was an update for the skype-app and voilà, the phone didn't crash anymore.

BUT the interesting part is that after I made the update to iOS 5.0.1 the phone suddenly started crashing AGAIN.

And guess what: skype released another update for their app and now it's working again with iOS 5.0.1

So for me it's clear that there seems to be a problem with the skype app which causes battery issues (if it's not being kept updated constantly).

So make an update to iOS 5.0.1 and update all of your apps (especially the skype-app if you have installed it on your phone) and tell me if it works for you as well or if your 3Gs still keeps rebooting during calls.

Sorry but i have to disagree here.

There is no particular issue with Skype or any other individual app. The issue is a combination of battery power with phone memory and the functionality of the phone with a weak signal. I have never had Skype on my phone and have had this problem since day one. My thoughts are that if you have been running a few apps and don't shut them down completely, i.e double tap home button, they are still running in the background. Then, when you get or make a call it basically overloads the memory and drains battery power, then just shuts down. I have found if i actually shut down all apps then the calls seam to be ok. This is obviously not good as the phone does not do what it should do, but i have read elsewhere about the battery problem and a new up rated battery being the fix. As i have only had my phone for 6 weeks, and changed it twice with apple already, i am getting it swapped out for a iphone 4 so problem hopefully fixed.

Hi Craig,

I was just about to protest that I've never used Skype myself, but then realised you've probably just replied to a post of my own to provide your feedback about Skype etc.

I would have to concur that Skype itself is NOT the root cause. I've even restored my 3GS as new in previous times and had it reboot with no data or apps on it (except what came with the iOS 4.x at the time). Granted there have been many folk with varying degrees of success with various fix attempts, but to date there is essentially only one sure fix. Some have reset network settings, some have tried a new SIM, some have just restored, some have removed an 'app' of some kind. Amen to those fixes which have worked but it's a shame they didn't work for all.

To this day there is only one fix which works c. 99%, which involves replacing a file within the iOS 4.x system. The file is in charge of reporting the battery's status to iOS. Where it fails would appear to be an incompatibility with a large volume of batteries, so the status is not reported and the iPhone reboots as a safety measure. In my own experiences, where the file change has not worked it's transpired other reboot and stability issues were present and the user had to change the battery.

And with iOS 5 there is no cure, and even worse the status monitoring file has gone so cannot be replaced. It is so, so sad that Apple just refuse to fix this widespread problem. As for me, I have a working 3GS and have helped 700+ 3GS owners fix theirs.

Shame on Apple!

Shame Apple shame.. i can't use my iPhone 3GS to make calls because it reboots in 3-4 minutes randomly..

i saw that some user fixed the problem replacing a particular file using jailbreak finctions, but can't be the same on iOS5 cause that file is no longer available in the new software

Apple can fix the problem but he wont i think.. so to constraint us to buy a newer iPhone model...this is a fraud.... i fell myself teased by Apple.

Before iOS4 all worked fine on our iPhone..

SHAME APPLE!

PS: just now.. i found this solution.. i'll try it:

wait until the battery is totally empty.. the phone must turn off itself, after a while do a restore, but not with the PC.. you must use the phone, then.. configure it as a new phone using iTunes, don't use the pevious back up because if there are a software bug you'll bring back again in the phone.. i translated the original italian post.. hope it is clean.. my english isn't very perfect 😀

i'll try it.. but i don't think it will work

I've reported before how I have had problems wiith phone rebooting after 5 minutes of phone call. Phone is 2 yrs old and out of warantee, not on cotract, i bought it direct from Apple. I have tried everything on this forum over the last year and nothing has worked. I decided to send it back to apple for a battery replacement in the hope that i would get a swop over. As it is out of warantee it was worth paying for the battery exchange.

So I sent it back, It was inspected the next day and another phone was despatched to me the same day. I received it next day. Thats 3 days turn around, brilliant

The new phone looks brand new, in a sealed box packed in China. I cant tell if it is new or recon as when thay recon they repair any faults and give it a new case and glass. It feels new to me and now I have a phone with 90 days of warantee even though my old one had expired.

I suggest you either pay up for a battery exchange ( they just do a swop of phone) or kick up a fuss in the Apple Store. they may well do a swap on the spot to get rid of you. They will not want new customers hearing your problems.
