Well now...been happy with my ipod touch 8GB (4th gen) since last May when I got it, it's running software version 4.2.1. Happy until a couple of days ago when I started getting all the problems outlined in the million or so messages preceding this one. Suddenly the battery drains literally overnight whereas before it was pretty robust in terms of battery life. I just use it to listen to music, no apps, photos or anything on it. I've put it back to factory settings (still waiting to see if that makes a difference), any other suggestions? Can't understand why the battery thing only kicked off a few days ago...I've looked at software updates and the last one was a java update on 12 Mar. So this seems to have kicked off out of the blue.

Yep....kind of fed up with Apple. I'm in the market for a new phone and I'm waiting on the Iphone 5. Just don't know. My son had the last 2 versions of the iphone till his 4 was stolen. He's tech savvy and knew of many shortcomings for the iOS operating system. So he switched to a Samsung with the Android System and now just raves about it. He'll never go back to Apple and really preaches the Android system to any one whose undecided on which way to go. I'm not a techie and do like Apple products when they're working properly. Too bad Apple won't own up to this battery problem and give us a fix.

Re: Battery drains

Well, as promised earlier, I have returned home and am now using Verizon Fios Wifi. There is no difference in battery usage with Comcast vs. Verion. So, the issue of ISP wifi is dead, as far as I am concerned.

Again, my Itouch 4g is constantly in Airplane Mode and I use Wifi all the time.
All push and pullservices are OFF and used only when needed.
Locator is off, and used only wehn needed.
Mail push/pull off-used when needed.
Safari and other apps are closed when not being used.
Facetime time is a killer, so it's totally disabled.
Brighten screen when it's needed. If not, playing games or making calls can be done with darker screen.

I have my Itouch in use eery day, surf, and play games here and there. My battery can last 7 days, depending on usage. If I enable al the bells and whistles for stuff I never use, the battery drains,as it did in Florida.

So, try all of this and give it a chane. I did, and it works. And, forget about your ISP being the issue. It's not. It's just how u set up your Itouch personal preferences. To each, his own.

Good luck, andhope this helps someone.

Alright, after reading through 40 pages of this thing, I decided to try and play around with a few suggestions. What I did NOT try was doing a "refresh as new" as many people have done - that just sounded like something too risky and time consuming. I'm glad I didn't go that approach.

Symptoms:
1) My fully-charged *4th Gen iPod Touch* left on standby overnight would be under 20% in the morning. Note: This was AT home.

2) The same fully charged 4th Gen iPod Touch left on standby in my office showed about 95% of battery life after an 8-9 hour work day. Hmmm... drastic difference.

3) The settings were not any different when at home or at work --> notifications on, wifi on, airplane mode off, location services on, etc.

4) My fully-charged *2nd Gen iPod Touch* on iOS 3x left on standby overnight showed not much drop in battery life in the morning.

_Here is what I did to resolve the battery drain:_
1) I ran a search for my router model on Google. Keep in mind, I have a Netgear Wireless-N RangeMax.
2) I found the latest firmware available for my router, which was older than I thought it would be (2008!) and downloaded that. It's possible that my router already had this install, but there was no way for me to tell.
3) I connected to my router as an admin and installed the NEW firmware.
4) After the update completed, I reset my router (YOU SHOULD ALWAYS DO THIS AFTER A FIRMWARE UPDATE) by holding the reset button for 30 seconds.
5) I connected to my router as an admin again
6) Under "Wireless Settings" --> "Security", I decided to also modify the type of encryption being used. Therefore, I changed it from using WPA + WPA2 to just WPA2. I used the same passphrase and network SSID so I didn't need to do anything on either of my iPod Touches to reconnect; they both automatically recognized the wireless network.

I ran a test last night. I left the fully-charged 4th Gen iPod touch on standby overnight. NONE of the settings were tweaked, so again, notifications on, wifi on, airplane mode off, location services on, etc. In the morning ... 95% battery life! It worked! I've been enjoying my iPod all day and now I don't have to turn that sucker off at all. I hope this works for others.

I know people will be skeptical about this solution and the next question would probably be, "Why do I have to upgrade the firmware of my router? I didn't have to do that before!" Well - in my opinion, a router is considered hardware, and new software needs to have the proper hardware to support it. You wouldn't run Windows 7 on your 2003 75MHz Pentium II would you? iOS4 is no different from any other operating system.

Apple should educate their consumers a little better about what the hardware requirements are for iOS4, more specifically for running it on WiFi.

Got the app you suggested. Not really sure how to interpret what I see. When Wi-Fi on, as soon as I turn the app on, I see a flurry of "activities" (ie amazonaws.com, iyunes, deployakamaitechnologies.com)appearing in green and orange icons, and turning to red (X) icons, then "no TCP connection", then starting over and over again. I would imagine that nothing should happen if I am not using my Wi-Fi or not "surfing". As I said, this just started with recent app upgrade. Since then,in order to avoid draining the battery in standby mode I have to "reset network connections" before turning the iPod off. By being "connectionless" the battery stays 100% overnight instead depleting to 50%. An unecessary and annoying hassle if you ask me!

Gv....Can't really help you with deciphering those activities. The ones running on my iPod led me to a couple Apps that continually ran, so I just turned all apps off and call them up as needed. I had to do the reset procedure twice now to keep the battery functional. However, I don't have to do the reset very time I turn the iPod off. I also have Notifications off and only turn it on as needed. I mainly want the iPod for music and have it rigged up in my Truck and on my Motorcycle to play music and have it charged as I roll down the road. Works fine that way. WiFi is always on and I call up a couple news outlets when I have a signal, as well as check my mail or Facebook on occasion. My iPod doesn't do every thing it should, unless I tweek it.....so I'm not TOO unhappy with it. Just don't know if I'll buy an iPad or new Phone when it comes out.

Hi there! New itouch user, formally a zune user (ha, sold it and bought and itouch).

I have had my itouch a week or two. I was using it fine and noticed after the 4.3 update that my battery also goes from "full charge" to less then "half charged" in a matter of 30 minutes. Even after it charges for an hour and I always make sure its fully charged. After reading the previous posts, it looks like I am not the only one. I also had the graphic glitch issue and am downloading the latest update to see if its resolved. I am so happy apple targets issues fairly quickly it seems.

Actually, there have been no real fixes from Apple re the battery issue which has gone on for months. As for me, still have the iPod touch but am trying an Android based phone to see if better..

I think mine is fixed. I updated to 4.2.1. Still drained. So I made sure everything was turned off and Restrictions was still on. Turned off restrictions. Now my battery is back to normal with Wifi left on.

It's been 3 days now with wifi left on and still my battery icon is full. I have hardly used it but at least it's not draining when it's asleep anymore. It would last 9 hours before it would be dead from doing nothing but sleeping.

I have several apps to update so I would not be surprised if something goes wrong after but at least it's progress.

Hope it helps someone else.
