Macbook Pro 2011 Bootcamp Secondary Display

Hi,

First time getting a macbook. Great machine, but i still need windows. I setup bootcamp, and its worked great. Installed the macbook drivers and everything.

I picked up a minidisplay -> vga adapter and it works great in osx.

However, in windows i can not get the secondary display to work. I updated the drivers, still nothing. In the settings, i can see the secondary monitor, the brand of it and even the resolution of it. But nothing is on the screen.

I called apple, they referred me to microsoft, who referred me back to apple.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

2011 macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

I find a way to solved.

The new macbook pro need use a special VGA cable in windows7.

The VGA port has 15 pins, normal VGA cable just used 3+6 pins, the other pins aren't connection between two VGA port on the cable.

But new Macbook pro (MC700) in Windows7 need use the VGA cable: all 15 pins are connection between two VGA port on the cable.

Now, I use the cable, everything is fine.

Hi all

I am having exactly the same issues with the new (mid-2011) Macbook Air 13-Inch. Drove me crazy. Everything nice and smooth under Lion, only 1 out of 5 projectors work under Win7 64-bit. Tried downgrade driver (Bootcamp install uses latest Intel driver). Tried all different orders of connecting the cable and adapter. Tried four different cables and Mini-Displayport to VGA adapters. No solution. Have been to two Apple stores but nobody could help.

Then I found this discussion thread. There seem to be some good solutions here. I will try this soon and post here, if a solution presents itself.

Thanks again for this helpful discussion.

Update:

Connecting with the Mini-Displayport to DVI connector did NOT solve the problem- the projector still does not recognize the MBA. I have also tried to use the Mini-Displayport to DVI adapter and adding an DVI to VGA adapter on top of that, with little success. I will most likely end up using Parallels now.

It is unbelievable how Apple could mess this up so badly. Let's face it: >90% of all data projectors around the world use the VGA connection only. And I have to use a lot of different ones for work.

Posted this in another thread, but to help: I've found the Cirago Active MiniDP to VGA adapter that works well with Thunderbolt, Windows 7, and VGA output to projectors. I had the same problem, the Apple-branded adapter does not work at all. I decided to try the Cirago as it claims to be some kind of new "active" conversion.

I'm using this on a 2011 Macbook Air (Core i5, HD 3000 graphics, Win7 Enterprise) using Apple's boot camp drivers for the graphics. This adapter works perfectly in Windows, extending or mirroring the display to projectors and LCD monitors flawlessly. Hope this helps!

Thanks Matt for this new possible solution, I was ready to go and buy two PCs to replace my macs for onsite until I saw your post. I just want to check if you have used this adapter going through a switcher at all?

Also I can't find a stockist for the Cirago in the UK and I can't get one shipped over. I have found this adapter but I'm not sure if it converts the same way as the Cirago one does.

If anyone has any suggestions they'll be much appreciated as it's getting very close to the busy conference season and I need my newest Macbook Pro as a backup machine!

I've used the adapter in just a few ways so far with success:

1. With multiple LCD projectors at work

2. Through a Belkin 4-port VGA switchbox to an HP 19" LCD monitor

3. Directly cabled to an HP 24" LCD monitor

No problems at all. I also loaned it to a coworker with a Thunderbolt MacBook Pro, worked there as well.

I don't have any experience with the StarTech, although they didn't get great reviews on Amazon. I believe you can buy on the amazon.com US site and have it shipped to UK, albeit at a higher cost, if you can't find it locally.

Hi Matt

Thanks for the info.

I went ahead and bought the StarTech adapter as it was an easier and cheaper option initially.

I can confirm that my business partner has tested this onsite over the weekend and it works perfectly with the new Thunderbolt MacBook Pro.

Anyone in the UK having the same issue not being able to project when using the Apple miniport to VGA adapter buy one of these instead.
