10.6.7 Freezes when attempting to run iTunes 10.2.1

I have just updated to 10.6.7 all Apps (e.g. Mail, Safari, Parallels) tried so far work fine except iTunes. Every time I run iTunes 10.2.1 I get as far as the window displaying correctly then within 20secs the machine freezes and is unresponsive to anything other than a forced shutdown via the power button. I have fixed disk permissions with the same result.

Anyone else experiencing the same? Any suggestions as to a fix?

MacBook Air, Other OS, iTunes 10.2.1

baltwo, actually, piling on does help as it gives more insight into the size of the issue, what systems seem to be impacted, and some of the people piling on may spark a new idea to try to solve it. It also gives Apple more of a heads up that this isn't an isolated issue that one or two people are having.

Lastly, I doubt Apple wants regular users signing up for ADC just to send in bug reports.

I think I got mine working again, but not by anything anyone mentioned before, so I hope this helps:
1. Trash all iTunes preferences from /users/Your Name/Library/Preferences (I typed iTunes into the search bar, and deleted everything - I know that's overkill, but a lot of it was from prior years, so it wasn't bad to clean up anyway).

2. Trash iTunes Library Genius.itdb from users/Your Name/Music/iTunes. I saw this in another thread about iTunes 10 freezing (but not taking the machine down, like we seem to experience).

3. Launch iTunes, accept the EULA, and then quit almost as soon as it launches into the main window. This seems to be the trick as I got freezes when I didn't include this step. iTunes took a long time to finally quit (the window went away, but the Dock icon stayed lit for a while)

4. Relaunch iTunes, and immediately close the side bar. iTunes went through analyzing, updating and communicating with Apple about Genius.

That did it. I'm listening to music right now. Let's hope it holds up.

1. This is your stored Genius info, and it will rebuild itself when you start up iTunes again (I mentioned that in my steps). Genius is working for me after the rebuild, so you should be fine. If you had existing Genius playlists, they may be gone, but I don't know as I never saved any.

2. I would rather have a working computer with a Genius-less iTunes than a frozen computer I can't use at all, so I wasn't worried about losing Genius as a risk. You should have Genius working just fine afterward, though. What you should do (and what I did was) rather than just deleting the file, move it to your deskptop. Restart your computer. Then relaunch iTunes. That way, you still have the file as a back up.

He's right, BT.
"Regular users" won't. Users that care to do more than gripe in a forum do.
Users that want to help others and Apple put out a better product. But you know in the end, it's easier to go online and whine than do something...

LOL. I've been recommending that route for years and no one from Apple's ever told me that. Maybe you know something that I don't. If so, cite your references. For others, File away and awaken the engineering staff. 😉

Well, I have no more references than you do.

I'm merely using a bit of rational logic. First, the terms of ADC membership imply its purpose being a community for developers, and the D in ADC stands for Developer not Consumer. Then they also run these support forums for this sort of posting activity, again lending to the notion that the ADC forums aren't for regular users. Lastly, users commenting about iTunes and OS X in the ADC forums who aren't developing to gripe about software that people in ADC don't develop ruining their computers (iTunes and Mac OS X). None of that means Apple will yell at you for doing so, but it also doesn't mean it's their intention. As a forum admin, I deal with posts going in the wrong place - not the end of the world, but it lends to content needing to be moved or causing confusion as it's off topic/purpose from the thread or forum - much like this chain is now doing, ironically.

But, what do I know. I don't have references to cite. I'm sure you're about to cite yours shortly, right?
