Trusteer's Rapport Software

Bank of Montreal online banking has a pop-up window offering me a free download of Rapport which it says will protect me from online fraud and identity theft. I don't like to download any applications on my imac unless I know it is not going to cause me issues later.
Please advise.
Thanks
Linda

Hi Martin,

Rapport is a security software application that provides online transaction protection and protection from online identity theft for consumers. Rapport scans and detects financial malware on your computer, and may remove or block it from accessing sensitive information.

Last time I tested Mac anti-virus software (in January), I wasn't able to test Trusteer, because I wasn't able to find a trial version. So I can't say what it might detect.

I can say that I find their claims of not being able to provide such a list for "security reasons" to be extremely questionable. That policy merely prevents the average user from knowing what they are protected against, while not affecting malware authors in the slightest.

Regarding your Mac OS X 10.6.8 system, note that there is currently no known malware capable of infecting that system.

I've been plagued with a niggling issue which seemed, at various times, to have been the fault of Firefox. I just un-installed Rapport and the niggling issue has disappeared. The problem was that when I started Firefox there was a 50:50 chance that it would fail to start properly. The Firefox icon used to bob up and down for a while before settling down to a stationary but inactive state. I used to have to "Force quit" Firefox from the task bar icon even though there were no visible indications that Firefox was running at all. Since un-installing Rapport, this problem has completely stopped.

I am intrigued to know why "Trusteer Support" is so evasive over the exploits that Rapport allegedly protects against. Name them! Attempting to evade the issue by directing users to raise a support ticket is not acceptable. If the info can be shared in a support ticket then the info should be public. How many copies of Norton Antivirus would have sold, if Norton had adopted the same weasely approach? "Of course you don't need to know which viruses you're protected against, such information in the hands of a customer is nothing but a security risk". What utter tosh. This thread has been running for 2 years and yet, as evidenced by my own experience, un-installing Rapport is still the solution to at least one stability problem.

HI,

yes i have had issues too, I have managed to uninstall by locating their uninstaller from the original DMG file, but it simply does not seem to work with Mac at all, it has made my system run slower, reduced battery life (as i assume its constantly running in the background) and since it doesn't work, i still get annoying messages from my bank asking me to install it every time i log in. I tried their so called updated version but it had the same effect on the running of the computer ad still didn't work so i have just uninstalled it again.

How do they persuade the banks it such a good idea to push them i don't know.
