Duplicate iPhoto events in iPhone/iPad sync

I'm getting duplicate iPhoto events showing up when I try to sync my iPhone and/or iPad. These events are not in duplicate in iPhoto itself. I have tried repairing the iPhoto database and it's file permissions. I have no idea why iTunes reads these events like so (see included screen shot). Any help would be appreciated; thanks in advance.

I ended up getting my iLife '11 disc back out and reinstalling iPhoto. The installed version wouldn't work until I updated it, but only to 9.1.

Happy to report I didn't have to do anything tricky with photo libraries, restarting iPhone in goofy ways, using Time Machine, etc. This fixed my problem. Now 9.1.2 can wait in Software Update until the fix for this issue comes through.

@beinkempew1 ,

By reinstalling iPhoto 11 from the CD and upgrading it to version 9.1 you have achieved what others have by restoring iPhoto 11 from their Time Machine backups.

Although I can believe that this can be the solution in some cases, I can also imagine that it can cause more problems than it solves. I installed the 9.1.2 update as soon as it appeared and used it for some time before discovering the problem with the merged events being split during synchronization with iTunes. Now, if 9.1.2 has been writing things in the iPhoto Library that previous versions cannot understand -- after all, updates are often backward compatible, but rarely forward compatible -- then, a previous version might really screw up my iPhoto Library, whereas now it seems that some module of iPhoto 9.1.2 that iTunes talks to during synchronization is overlooking merged events.

@Clear -- Oh jeeze...I've got around 10,000 photos...that's not really an option. As it is, I've had to turn off Time Machine on my wife's Mac which is where I've been doing all the troubleshooting. All that tinkering has TM ready to do a 30GB update. I think, once Apple releases the update, I may revert to the iPhoto library that was in use prior to my trying to fix their bug ;-)

That said, if you have a small photo library, it does seem like a perfectly valid temporary fix.

On a related note...couldn't get that 1-7 step process to work for me, but maybe I messed up a step. Does the poster have any idea why it would work or is it just a shot in the dark that happened to hit its target...at least for some.

Thanks all...will continue to post here with any new info as well as a software update notice should I see one. Apple Engineering committed to calling me no later than tomorrow evening with an update so hopefully we'll know more soon.

@rwross: The original step-by-step guide wasn't created by me. But I can imagine it has something to do with the itunes/iphoto communication. Since the events are messed up in itunes, the communication between iphoto (where it's correct) and itunes (where it's not) doesn't work that well. That's propably the reason why I had to create the temp iphoto library, which was then seen as default by itunes. When I changed it back to my default library, iTunes had to "import" the original events again, which miraculously worked ...

I can only assume ... 😟
