Duplicate iPhoto events in iPhone/iPad sync

I'm getting duplicate iPhoto events showing up when I try to sync my iPhone and/or iPad. These events are not in duplicate in iPhoto itself. I have tried repairing the iPhoto database and it's file permissions. I have no idea why iTunes reads these events like so (see included screen shot). Any help would be appreciated; thanks in advance.

I got so tired of trying to figure all this out that I went into iPhoto and picked a few crucial client-related events that I needed on my iphone and put them in a new album. My albums synch just fine. At least I have the most important pics available until they fix this problem. It didn't take too long, either. Temporary, I know, but it calmed me down a bit!

All .. I have also found an ugly work around: Go into iPhoto and create Albums which contain your photos you want to sync until this is fixed. Very labour intensive .. so a slight mod .. use Smart Albums and construct the query to be Events contain "some string from your event". Select the new smart album in iTunes and do a sync. Worked for me, although I don't plan on creating Smart Albums from all my (500+) events. guck.

@rwross,

You say that the separate events corresponding to the original events before the merge all contain the same photos, i.e., those of the first event. When I look at the lists in iTunes and iPhoto Library Manager, both of which show the split events instead of the single merged one, they both indicate a different number of photos in each split event, not the same number, as I would have expected based on your posting. Do you mean that, additionally, those numbers are incorrect and should, in your example, all be 5?

Richard

@Richard

Yes, in my example all the split / duplicate events would have 5 photos in it and selecting several of those events with 5 photos would not result in, say, 15 different photos being sync'ed if I had selected three. Rather, the same five photos would be indexed and only 5 total would sync.

That said, it's not a perfect bug because I've found some events that had literally hundreds of photos in it and then ten duplicates each with 14 photos in it. I couldn't find a definitive pattern, but the more common situation was for there to be a great many duplicates each with the same number of photos in it.

Hope that helps...

Okay, It seems this has been a problem for many users, and it seems apple is not going to fix it soon.

I found a temporary solution to get all my photos I want synced on my iPad/iPhone by doing the following smart album. (see screenshot)

I have about ten events with Julia included in the event name, and I just placed a "keyword" on all of the events I want synced. It takes about 5 minutes to set up. I guess this is my workaround for the meantime.

Thanks a lot good one! I found another workaround which is in itunes is to sync only events from the last three months or six months - that worked but missed a few pictures which were in separate events.

Hope Apple will be able to sort this silly annoying bug out soon - or at least acknowledge this issue and say they are working on it.

I had this same issue and spent a day fixing it.

The easiest solution until apple comes out with a fix is to go into time machine, then restore the previous version of iphoto 9.1.1.

Once done, re-sync.

All of your events will be back as they were prior to the update.

I have used this solution on my iPhone 4 (verizon wireless) and on my iPad 2.

Hope this helps everyone!

For folks who are considering reverting to 9.1.1., have you ever done that before with a core iLife App?

My worry is that since your Mac has already been updated to 9.1.2 and has had the corresponding Web Receipts placed in the Macintosh HD folder that Software Update will break and lose track of what version is actually installed. The App will be 9.1.1, but Software Update uses Web Receipts to track stuff which will say it's 9.1.2.

Anyway...I'd urge caution unless someone has actually done this before.

@rwross,

I tend to agree: exercise extreme caution! The receipts are certainly one consideration. The other is, when an install runs, all sorts of scripts to all sorts of things in all sorts of places. Merely restoring the iPhoto app in the Applications folder is not the same as installing the 1.9.1 update.

This is the kind of situation where Apple could earn some brownie points by offering or sanctioning a work around until the next update is ready.

Having reverted back to 9.1.1 everything seems to be running fine (hope it stays that way).

If I log on to the App store and check for updates it's offering me the 9.1.2 update just as it did before this charade started. I'm not going to download it, of course, so I'll wait for the next update and report back if I have any issues.

If I do have problems in the future I assume I could re-download the complete iPhoto app again as it is already bought and paid for through the Mac App store and that would enable a complete re-install.

Right now I'm not too worried (fingers-crossed behind my back 🙂)
