ipad 2 screen repair (it works fine but little bit cracked)

my 10days old ipad 2 was dropped from about 30cm above and it hit my feet and to a wooden desk by an accident - I was on the desk and trying to grab my ipad and somebody tapped me and i dropped- and the screen is cracked but it works still fine. Only problem is cracked screen sometimes bothers me. I've called apple for repair and advisor asked me $420... is it really $420? though ipad 2 works 100% fine??

I am very disappointed because of this situation, as a huge fan of apple's - I have iphone 4, macbook pro, and ipad 2 and the response from apple makes me have questions if I got a problem with my iphone and macbook pro someday later.User uploaded file

I hope apple can change the glass part... $420 is ridiculous.

I'm with you. My iPad was my first Apple product ever, after hearing for years how amazing their customer service has been. After waiting 40 minutes for my appointment, I was told my only option for broken glass was $300. Definitely NOT the legendary customer care I've heard about for years. I'm quite possibly "One and Done" with Apple.

All very cute stories about how if you're honest that they will replace your ipad 2 for free. I purchased my iPad on August 26, 2011. My son, while playing an app we saw advertised on tv for kids, acciently dropped it while walking across the room. Of course it smacked the corner and shattered the class clear accross the iPad. I immediately went online to see what a repair might cost. I read all about how the apple store will stand behind their product and give you a once in a lifetime replacement. So I made an appointment at an apple store an hour from my home. I went in thinking that they were totally going to take care of me.....come on....this is apple. After all, when I purchased my first iMac 5 years ago, they said "welcome to the family." Turns out that spending $830 on my iPad plus $150 worth of protective accessories, is not enough to be taken care of. After being 100% honest in my story, I was told it will cost $415 to get a refurbished replacement. Apparently there has been too many dishonest people taking advantage of the "once in a lifetime replacement" and their policy has changed. My loyallty to apple was totally on the line tonight...after all, I have converted my parents, friends and other family members to iMacs and other apple products. Frankly I was just getting sick of supporting their windows products so I converted them to iMacs. But all that changes now. I will not be spending another dime with apple. I beleived Steve Jobs when he said that wanted to make products easy enought for a 5 year old to use. I think he accomplished that.....as long as the 5 year old doesn't drop it.

I totally understand your pain. I wrapped my new car around a telephone pole and Chevrolet gave me a complete replacement!

I just had the same exasperating experience as those that DID NOT get any help from Apple for their situation. My iPad 2 was knocked out of my hand and shattered (along with a dent on the frame by the camera). I have been an Apple customer for ages. My 3 kids are on their THIRD iMacs EACH! We have 2 of the $849 iPads and currently have 5 working iMacs in our household. My husband is about to get an iPhone and I was planning on switching as soon as my contract on my Android is up.

Well, after the load of BS I received tonight, along with a $419 price tag to fix my iPad, I refuse to get any further Apple products. I kept hearing over and over again: "We USED to have more options, but not anymore." Well, that means that people up to now were getting their iPads fixed or replaced without having to pay $419, but I'm just screwed. (Pardon my language - I've had a really, really bad day.)

We were even planning on getting the new version of the iPad, as soon as it comes out and give these to our two oldest kids (the 8 year old will probably inherit the Nook - lol). Well, I refuse to spend another $ on Apple products, Apple Care (each and every piece of hardware we have purchased, was purchased with the Apple Care) or anything else having to do with Apple. I am sincerely disappointed with their lack of customer service for long standing, loyal customers. The fact that they would be willing to just throw away a very good customer relationship, with tons of future revenue, over $419 just baffles me. But it also tells me that they don't care about their customers - obviously they have enough and don't need to worry about it. Well, word of mouth is a very, very powerful thing and all my Facebook friends are going to get an earful and will be amazed that a die hard Apple fan like myself, who has always preached that Apple can do no wrong, is walking away from the brand. I'm sad about it, as I was so excited to have the whole "set" (iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone and iMac) once I obtained my iPhone. I will have to find something else to get excited about now.

And to think that if they would have come back saying that well, they can't do it for free, but it's Black Friday and we'll do it for $219 instead, I wouldn't have batted an eyelash, handed over the money and have been a happy, happy Apple user. :/

Good luck on your move over to Samsung, Dell,or wherever you end up. Come back and let us know if they will replace their products for free that you or kids or dogs broke, dropped, or smashed. In the meantime you sound like all the whiners that expect something for nothing and you are not happy for the few that get a good deal. Welcome to real life. Let me know when you put all your Apple products up for sale.

Thanks!

If I've learned anything from this discussion, it's that Apple faithfuls are apparently cranky a-holes that cannot tolerate any criticism of their favorite company. If you guys are any representation of the Apple brand, I'll be glad to be finished with their products. Oh, and by the way, a buddy of mine just had an Asus tablet that his kid dropped and broke replaced for free. So, yes, believe it or not, there are other companies out there. If you think Apple is the best, try representing them with a little more kindness and empathy, instead of holier-than-thou sarcasm.

Same sad story here in Minneapolis. Dropped my iPad on a sidewalk and my heart sank. Googled it and saw all these testimonials about how great the Mighty Apple is and how they will give you a "one-time only replacement for free". So I rushed over to the local Apple store expecting a good experience. First I waited an hour and a half for my appointment, then they were 20 minutes late for the appointment. Still, I was pleasant, expecting good service and a replacement. No such thing. They told me it would be $299. FOR A CRACKED SCREEN (Yes I was yelling in my head). I told them that was ridiculous gouging and left. Went home, got out the duct tape and patched it up. Goodbye Apple. People used to ask me how I liked my iPad and I responded like a recent convert to a fundamentalist religion. Now, when they ask about my duct tape I will tell them the disenchanting truth. This baloney about handing replacement iPads out like candy to some people and ripping off everyone else is really unbelieveable. Adieu, Apple. Only duct tape is holding us together and that won't last long.

I had mine replaced today and had to pay the $400. I asked if it was a refurb. Unit as it was in a brown box and was told by the"genius" that it was a brand new unit. Don't know if I believe that. Considered telling him that I would prefer to buy a different tablet instead, such as the rim playbook, but decided it would be worth it to pay as I can sell this one for more Han 400 and replace it with something else.

I feel your pain. They wanted charge me 350 for mine. What really stings is I've read plenty of times where they've replaced it the first time for free.

What also hurts is that I've sunk over 12G into apple products over the past 8 years. I've managed to convince my company to move to ios for mobile phones, etc. all of this because I,ve believed in apple. Well I'm not without options. Im in the middle of reloading my home machines with win7 and the 17" MacBook pro I was about to buy to life cycle out one of my home machines will now be a performance windows based laptop. When your loyal to a company, there should be some loyalty back.
