ipad app update asks for wrong apple ID
When I check settings, my correct apple ID shows. But when I do an "update apps", the wrong apple ID shows up, with only the password box available for input. What to do?

OMG, this is EXACTLY the problem!! Thank you for taking the time to eloquently post the nature of the problem. It's staggering how stupid this is... Hope someone from Apple can address this. I spoke to senior tech rep (convinced them into letting me at least tell them what the problem is without charging me for tech support - I love this, charge the customer for a problem Apple created) and asked them to document this and look into it. Sounds like at least dozens of people are having this problem since the OS 5.0 updates on both the ipad and iphone...
delete and reinstall the app with your actual account.. what kind of button you see at the app's page in AppStore (buy-install-installed)?
That's what I've done since I have the problem... delete and reinstall. I don't have to buy again the app because it's already mine, but I lose the data every time I reinstall from the ipad because I have to delete the app first. If I don't delete it just pop up the wrong ID, not the real one (the one the app was purchased with).
It's incredible that we have to deal with this and no one care about it. It's a 600$ hardware, for the god's sake!!
If you update the app In iTunes and then sync you don't have to delete.
But having dealt with this before, I can tell you that you probably have an app(s) that were purchased with a different Apple ID and just don't realize it. Go to the iTunes Store on YOUR COMPUTER and look at your purchase history. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that the app isn't there.
Why would you tell someone that is trying to help you to not post a solution here? With an attitude like that I can see why no one at AppleCare will help you over the phone.
As for charging you, you do realize that technical support is not free right? Apple is under no obligation to help you after your 90 days of phone support that comes with the device has ended. You're quite lucky that someone there has some compassion and decided to look into the issue for you.
Yes, I usually update the app in iTunes so I don't have to lose data, but that's very annoying.
The app is in my history with my correct ID, of course... Even more, I use some of these apps in my iphone aswell, and in my iphone I can update without problem.
Never had the wrong id poppint out in my iphone, just in the ipad.
And to be clear 😝... it's not occurring in "some" apps... it does on EVERY app that i try to update on the ipad
I have had the same problem even before IOS 5. Me and my wife both sync our iphones in the same Itunes, both have seperate accounts. After the iphone syncs it adds apps to my phone that I didn't purchase but my wife did, so I just delete them, but when it comes to updating the apps there are ALWAYS some apps that are not under my account ID. It's very frustrating, at one point it even mixed all her contacts with mine. Apple needs to do something to rectify this very simple problem!
I have the same issue on my iPod Touch. I have had the problem in iOS 4 already 😟. After doing an erase and installing iOS 5 it worked for a while but now the problem is back.
To clarify I have 2 AppleID's one for the US and one for Germany (thanks for not having a global store). I have some of my apps purchased from the US id and some from Germany, thus I cannot avoid using the 2 IDs.
Even though I am logged in with the German ID and the app was purchased with that ID I am still asked for the password of the US account. If I enter that one it tries to purchase the app.
This is really frustrating. 😟
I was facing the same situation but somehow found the solution.
Problem: I use a Canadian and a US Apple ID interchangeably to download/ purchase apps and games. I used to sign in from Settings -> Store, and my phone automatically switched me to the store corresponding to the ID. However suddenly my phone started to ask me password for US id while "Updating all", despite having signed in using Canada ID.
Solution:
(1) Completed "update all" using US ID. It gave me warnings, swiitched my store to US store and then updated all applications that I had downloaded using US ID.
(2) After "ALL" applications were updated, I went to Settings-> Store and signed out my Canada ID (Sign off any id that is here".
(3) Signed in again using Canada ID. It switched my store to Canada Store.
(4) Went to "Update all". This time my Canada Apps were ready to be updated! Phew!
Apparently problem occurs when you have applications waiting for update.
My solution was to simply log into my apple ID account, add in the old ID back into the default log in, and simply add my new id as an alternate address. This way it enabled me to get the verification email to activate the change. Once set up as a default, I clicked on the send verification email on the alternate email and verified from that email. Before logging out I checked my email and found that the verification was there. I approved the verification and logged back in. I checked my previous downloads in various apps and I was then able to access them all once again. . .
THANK YOU MADLOGIK!
It worked!!! hours spent on this....
I just fixed this on my ipod. My wife just got one and added herself onto the itunes on my computer with a new email address. When she downloaded apps it was putting them in with mine. Under my ipod settings on itunes I went to APPS, and then at the bottom of the list I unchecked automatically sync new apps. Then I went back and removed the apps that were in the list that I was not able to update because of the incorrect email address. Then I went back into itunes store on my ipod and clicked update, and they were all gone. Hopefully this helps.
Marshajoi,
I have the exact same problem when I upgraded to iOS 5, namely:

For some reason when I did the ios5 update, it prompted me to set up my devices w/ an apple ID that had to be an email address. I used the same apple ID seeing as it was already set up as an email address. Now it is treating the apple ID that APPLE shortnened (without the aol.com) and the entire email/apple ID as 2 different accounts.
It appears that now I have two accounts where I used to have just one:
I think the trick is to set my iPad to the first, older account. I happen to have multiple email addresses so I just changed the older account to use one of my other email addresses, and then logged the iPad's store account into the old account using that other email address.
Does that help?
(In fact, I think I'm going to set everything, like iCloud, etc. on the iPad to the old account #1.)
I'm going to try this.. Having the same issues with old/new login ID's.
