"There is a problem with your device"

I just plugged my iPad (1) into iTunes to sync and it said there was a new software update available and did I want to install it. I said yes and the update started. After a while, it said there was an error and I needed to restore which I attempted only to have an "There is a problem with your device" message come up. I unplugged it and plugged it in again and the same error message happens every time. I contacted Apple support and they said the "hardware" still has 60 days of warranty left but they want $29 per incident or $79 for ongoing support and an Apple Store is 100 miles away. I would appreciate any help I could get. Thanks.

OK as of writing 9682 views with 227 posts - when will this be fixed? I purchased my used Ibrick (64gb WiFi) on Thursday from a colleague.

Working all fine on 4.3.3. and was then factory reset and handed to me on Friday. Spent all Friday (13th - grim date!) night trying to activate this via Itunes and received the same message as posted. Couldn't get hold of anyone in tech support so made a freebie appointment at Apple Milton Keynes (UK) the guy didn't even look at the Ipad and simply responded with 'we've had problem with servers and can't even activate in store!!' go home and keep trying, if nothing happens by next weekend pop back in and see us.

So, I like you, my frustrated friends have to sit and wait and just keep hooking it up to Itunes in the remote chance that Apple have called a HP engineer out to fix an overworked server! I'll keep trying and posting.

Basically its OK to have technical problems with servers, I understand that. What is unacceptable, that iTunes says that my device is defective.

I'm fed up with Apple's lies and generally incorrect behaviour.

I had been thinking about Microsoft quite the same way before I knew Apple. Now I think that the Redmond Guys are immaculate gentlemen (relatively, at least).

Yes, the apple iPad 1G authentication servers are down, no question. If you happen to save your SHSH blurbs (google TinyUmbrella) then you can easily restore to an older software. A SHSH file is a file that tells iTunes that Apple said it is ok to install the software (.ipsw file) in question to the device in question. If you save/capture this SHSH, then you can make iTunes think that Apple said iTunes can restore to the software in question, even though Apple does not technically still 'sign' the permission for iTunes to restore to that firmware. It is a really good habit to get into (saving your SHSH files) and is painless.
