"There is a problem with your device"

I just plugged my iPad (1) into iTunes to sync and it said there was a new software update available and did I want to install it. I said yes and the update started. After a while, it said there was an error and I needed to restore which I attempted only to have an "There is a problem with your device" message come up. I unplugged it and plugged it in again and the same error message happens every time. I contacted Apple support and they said the "hardware" still has 60 days of warranty left but they want $29 per incident or $79 for ongoing support and an Apple Store is 100 miles away. I would appreciate any help I could get. Thanks.

I have been troubleshooting this issue as well on and off for a few hours for a friend and I am now unable to update any device. When I try to update a different iPad or other iOS device it errors out before it finishes. I am assuming Apple has now turned off a switch so it won't brick any more devices while they fix the issue, but I still haven't seen or heard anything directly from them.

i have been trying to restore an ipod touch all evening but getting the same error as everyone else. I did restore an ipod nano 4th gen a few minutes ago with no issue. What is interesting about the process is that for the nano i was asked for my administrator password before it installed the software on the nano, but for the ipod touch it does not request it. Not sure if this is helpful or not.

It all lies in the activation process. I have been able to sync/backup/transfer purchases from my iPhone 3GS and also update apps within iTunes, and the app store on ios with no issues at all. I know for a fact they did some "maintenance" yesterday, and the Applecare rep specifically told me not to update.. so maybe they are still having issues, or hit a snag or something. We just so happen to be the first ones seeing it. Yay. :|

Wait til midnight, and then try. If that fails, make an appointment.. (stinks, I know)

having same issues here, upgraded the iOS, then tried to restore and got the same error everyone else has been getting. called Apple and they said they've never seen this, went through all the troubleshooting and deleting itunes and such and now they are sending out a replacement iPad.

so now after reading all these posts I'm gonna wait and see if this fixes itself

I'm having the same problem, I'm from Brazil and I can not update my iPad, hope it is a problem Apple's own and that they correct it as quickly as possible.

I have the same issue. I never really like to update things. I like to do a full restore. So I backed up my stuff, put my iPad in recovery mode, and it d/led and installed 4.3.3. Now, it says "There is a problem..." and that it can't be activated and that it might be damaged. Now that I see this post, it's apparent that it's not a problem with the iDevices (it's been happening with iPod touches as well), but with either the 4.3.3 update or Apple's activation servers.

Apple, wake up. I need the iPad for work.
