How to set up IMAP Yahoo Mail with Apple Mail

Note: You do not need to be a Mail Plus subscriber to take advantage of IMAP.

In Apple Mail, add a new account and after entering a full name, email address and password, hold down the Option key. The Create button will change to Continue, allowing one to manually configure the account settings.

Use the following settings:

Incoming Server - imap.mail.yahoo.com

Outgoing Server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com

Incoming Port - 993 (requires SSL)

Outgoing Port - 465 (requires SSL/TLS)

Username: full email address (example: bill@yahoo.com)

Password: the password you login to Yahoo with.

Make sure to identify four mailboxes as special: Drafts, Trash, Sent and Bulk Mail (Junk).

For example, in the left pane under the heading "On My Mac" under the Yahoo account, select the Draft folder. Then on the menu bar select Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For > Drafts. Do this for the other 3 mailboxes to make sure your mail gets sorted correctly.

Best,

Alex

Oh my goodness!! I have been trying to set up my free yahoo mail for 3 days now and ONE simple thing from all of these posts helped me out! I have a free account, my password is small and I set up with IMAP and I was still receiving the caution triangle symbol in the actual apple mail. All is took was for me to enter into apple mail, click on- mail- on the menu bar in the upper left hand corner, drop down and click on - preferences, click on the yahoo mail icon, find -Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) and open the box. At the bottom click- edit SMTP server list and in the Server Name box it should read- smtp.mail.yahoo.com - Ok, all you have to do is add a : to the end of it!! That's it, a colon!! So now it should read- smtp.mail.yahoo.com: This is just for those of you who have set up everything proper with IMAP with the port 993 and its still not working. I hope this helps!

On my iPhone 5 (iOS 6.0.1), I got Yahoo mail working via POP using the info on this page:

http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?page=content&y=PROD_MAIL_ML&locale=en_GB&id=SLN47 24

For both incoming and outgoing mail, use your full Yahoo e-mail address as your 'User Name' and put your password in both 'Password' fields. Turn SSL on, use password authentication, and server port 465.

For MACBOOK/YOSEMITE:

I know this original post is from a while ago, but people are STILL having trouble getting Yahoo! mail to work on the Apple Mail application (at least I was), so I wanted to share my solution since the original post did not work for me (this is for my Macbook, however the same principle is used for iOs deviced)

On your Mac, go to settings > internet accounts

Click the + sign to create a new account

Choose the Yahoo! option

Enter your name, user name (make sure to put @yahoo.com after the user name)

For PASSWORD, do NOT enter your usual Yahoo! password (this is where I was able to fix my problem):

Open up your browser and go to Yahoo! and sign in as you normally would; on the upper right-hand corner hover over your user name and click "Account Info"

Click the "Account Security" tab

Scroll down to "App Passwords"

Under "Nickname your app" you can put in something like "Macbook Apple Mail"

Click "Generate Password"

You'll get a random password - highlight and copy it (command-C)

Now paste this password into the Password spot under the Yahoo! Mail setup in your Macbook settings

Hit Create

When it tells you to select the apps you would like to use for this email address (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Notes, etc...), make sure Mail is check-marked.

Now the account should show up in your Mail application!

THIS should work for you. At least it did for me. I hope this helps someone!

Thank you, Genevakeith.

It works for me after Mail app of Mac have definitely refused Yahoo account password.

In the Yahoo > Account Info > Account Security web page:

  • I did the two-step verification
  • I have configured the new app "Mac Mail" and generate new password
  • I have used this password (copy-paste) when the Mail app of Mac have asked me (saving also in KeyChain)

As of 15-Dec-2015, Yahoo has updated information for a outgoing IMAP server port including 465 or 587. This solved a send problem I had today. (Switching to 587) Full info as follows:

Yahoo FAQ: https://help.yahoo.com/kb/fix-imap-problems-sln3773.html

Check your IMAP settings

If you need specific instructions for your mail client or app, reach out to its manufacturer.

Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server

  • Server - imap.mail.yahoo.com
  • Port - 993
  • Requires SSL - Yes

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server

  • Server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
  • Port - 465 or 587
  • Requires SSL - Yes
  • Requires authentication - Yes

Your login info

This is rather and old post but it is still of actuality as Yahoo seems to create issues from time to time. I just had the same issue after letting my MacPro off for more than a month. My two yahoo accounts would not work anymore (and they were working fine on mac Macbook Air!). What I found (and it worked) is this: in your Yahoo accounts, in the Security Settings section, you will have some options - two in particular are of importance here: one option is to turn on the "double identification" option (see for that one post in the thread here); the other option (that worked for me) is to turn on the button for allowing apps that are using less secure access.

Once I turned on that feature, I immediately went to my Mail Yahoo accounts and made them fetch the mails and it all worked well. In your Mail Yahoo accounts you need to use your Yahoo password (as is indicated in several posts here).

Hope this will help you guys.
