I would like to add these notes.

1) I had suddenly the same error when trying to update from the app store.

2) The main difenrence between my situation and most of yours is I work with an iPad and iOS 4.3.5.

3) Therefore I agree to those who think it is a server side and/or authentication problem. It seems strange to me that Apple is silent about this for years!

4) The summary of mmarch of may 22, 2011 is very corect for my situation too.

5) The solution of FantomFanFlinga (to reset all settings) didn't work with me.

6) The solution of KubacK wasn't completely correct, BUT: when I went to the Date&Time settings to set it manualy, the date was in the future! When and by whom was this set in the future (day and month were wrong)? This complies with the suggestions to set or reset the date and time, and that the problem has something to do with the authentication where date and time is important.

After setting Date&Time correctly I could download and update from the App Store without any problem.

As with many other the only question left now is: WHY?

Furthermore I am very dissapointed in Apple and the way they respond.

I'm glad this forum exist and so many are working together in search for a solution.

Thank you all!

I was having this same issue. Randomly started today. I tired the date / time thing, killing al background apps, and no dice. What fixed it for me was I went into itunes and noticed there was a stuck song I had previously purchased that must have paused downloading when I lost data service at some point. I touched it to resume and when it finished not more 1004 error in App Store.

i just wanted to add another possible problem/solution to this thread.

i was receiving the same 1004 error on the iPhone(iPhone 4 32GB black, IOS 4.3.5, never jailbroken) when trying to run app updates and it didn't matter if it was 3G or Wifi, had no problems using iTunes on the iMac(2008 2.4ghz running 10.6.8).

after reading all the suggestions everywhere(hosts file[useless, the problem wasn't on the computer/wifi], clock manipulation[didn't do a thing], restore[didn't want to go that drastic, yet] and setting reset[didn't work]) i decided to look at my iTunes account.

turns out i had forgotten to update my iTunes account for 2 things.

a) the credit card i had on file was expired a month ago(of course, the new one arrived but i forgot to change the year on iTunes).

2) i had recently moved, and the CC on file has received that updated address, but i failed to update it on the iTunes account.

i updated both of these and now everything works.

so, for anyone still having this problem and can't fix it with the above solutions, this is another thing to check out, make sure your CC is still valid and the address info is correct. sometimes it's the little things we overlook!

I had the same problem for 2 days now. Was reluctant to do resetting as I feared that that may break my unlock. Then I went to Settings > Store > Apple ID > Sign Out. Then rentered my sign in info. That worked for me. I am now able to update and download apps. Hope this helps all others who are having the same problem. iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.3.3 Jailbroken and unlocked.
