Dear John, you should contact this person directly:
Johann Jungwirth, President and CEO Mercedes-Benz Research&Development in Palo Alto.
HE ist responsible for getting the iPhone to work with comand online, and he has promised that it will, probably in late 2012 or at the very begining of 2013.
However, i have no idea, if the solution only works for new cars, which would be a desaster for us all, or if we can simply upgrade our system.
The more people contact the responsible ones, the higher the chance, that our problem will be solved!
Good suggestion MAE0125, I have sent the following feedback to Apple and suggest everyone reading this thread does something similar:
"The flagship Mercedes COMMAND system does not work with the iPhone 4s. The message "CONNECTED PHONE DOES NOT SUPPORT DATA COMMUNICATION" is received when it tries to connect to the internet. Given a significant number of people that own Mercedes cars with COMMAND also own iPhones, when are Mercedes and or Apple going to sort this out?
FYI - I have the latest iPhone software update (IOS 5.1.1)"
I had the same problem with my C250 yptha I just picked up last week. The problem was actually the iPhone cable that was installed. The dealer ended up putting a 2013 model year cable into my 2012. The swapped it out and everything was fine. The only problem now is the text messages but that has to doe with iPhone not supporting MAP.
My car came with a iPod/iPhone connection installed in the center arm rest. The iPhone connects through bluetooth and through this cable. The good thing about that is that it charges the device at the same time.
Hi Typao - my car also has that connectivity. Both the cable and Bluetooth connection work fine with the phone, it is when trying to access the internet using the Command system that the problem arises. Is your car able to connect to the internet via that cable? If so, what model and year is it and which model iPhone do you have?
That's the million dollar question. I suspect Mercedes know the answer, but if they do they're keeping it very quiet. I suspect it's more likely to be a feature of IOS 6 than iPhone 5, so that would be good news for those of us with the iPhone 4s.
That is the one cent question, because the answer is that simple.
iPhone 5 is currently NOT supported by Comand Online, regarding data transfer and internet functions.
The reason is simple. Apple will not implement DUN-Profile to bluetooth, because this is a very OLD protocol. Even Google is officially not adding DUN to Android, because it is that OLD.
All current Phones support PAN-Profile, and as long, as Mercedes does not come up with a software update for its Command Online, supporting CURRENT Technology, supporting PAN, we can wait till iPhone 28 comes out, and there will still be no DUN!

but why you do want to browse the web usign the sluggish Comand interface? It doesn't allow to do anything while driving... It's much more easy and confortable to take the iPhone itself and do what you want...
It is not about broswing the web, that would be a real hassle, but there are other very important services:
- live traffic congestion info, not only the highways but also every small street in the city
- live weather info projected into the map, extremely useful for long distances and in winter
- Mercedes Benz Appstore (Only one App right now: Parking App, that shows you where to park and how many empty spots are available)
Many Apps to come, some might be junk, some might be very useful ...
Thank you INANC, I hadn't realised the the Command interface was based on DUN. That would explain why it is so sluggish as Trinity puts it. However, that doesn't explain why it won't work with the cable connection either, or is that based on a very old protocol too?
There are 3 methods to connect your "device" to your car:
1. Wireless, by Bluetooth, for Music, Phone functions and Data Connection (to cell phone provider,3g, Edge etc...)
2. Media Interface, by cable, just for music (also called iPod interface)
3. "Comfort" Phone Connection, by cable, for Phone functions, including a strong external Antenna on car
Not all MB Cars have option 2 and 3, in Europe, none of them are included in the base models.
To connect your car to the "outside World", your only option is the bluetooth connection. If you have your phone connected by cable, you have no internet. That applies to ALL phones.
Regarding receiving text messages with an iPhone for Mercedes Benz it now works!!! A couple of things you need to know;
1. Need a 3GS or newer,
2. Need iOS 6,
3. Pair iPhone to car,
4. Go to settings on the phone, select Bluetooth, tap on the blue arrow beside the MB connection,
5. Ensure 'notification' is on!
Voila, it works instantly!!!
If your Benz can display text messages the TXT MSG on the telephone display will no longer be grayed out!
In my 13 GLK it can only display and/or read out a text but you can use SIRI to respond by voice if you have a 4s or 5.

Thanks, I have iPhone 5 and iOS6, but STILL no Data connection ... ðŸ˜
Come on, Apple and Mercedes, figure this out!
And by the way, how am I supposed to use Siri, while my iPhone is in my Pocket?
What I miss is the compatibility between Siri and the Linguatronic-Button on my stearing wheel ... maybe in a 1000 years ...ðŸ˜
Are you trying to set up a wifi hub from your vehicle? Are you sure you have 'cellular data' enable on your iPhone? Not sure what you are trying to achieve, perhaps let me know and that will help find a solution.
