As has been said many times before here, Apple will not downgrade their phones to use the DUN method just to suit Mercedes as that is old, outdated technology. It will only work when Mercedes update their software to communicate using the newer method used by most smart phones now.
In Canada we have nothing for telematics, not mBrace, not Teleaid. We do not have the Globe at the top right corner at all and my understanding is that we never will for the current model years. : (
Isn't adding PAN or DUN simply a software issue? Whilst Mercedes should have provided some form of update by now, either to Comand or by the iPhone cradle having PAN added, couldn't Apple simply enable a DUN profile or have an App to enable DUN?
I DUNno?
Apple is very concerned about hacking and Jailbreaking, perhaps it is more complex than just enabling DUN or PAN from a privacy point of view? Or they are just lazy or miserable or following the motto, the best or NOTHING. : )
Either way, I agree that Apple and Mercedes should get this resolved, but will they? For new cars yes, for existing ones I do not know. : (
You are correct. I have a 13 GLK so we are in the same boat. Great car, disappointing management decisions regarding tech like telematics, especially in Canada. I have sent a few e-mails of complaint but they fall on deaf ears apparently. If Apple hadn't added support for texting in iOS6 then we wouldn't even have that!
I'm going to guess that whoever is in charge of this for Mercedes probably still sends letters if the telex machine isn't working... BMW and others have left Mercedes for dead and it really isn't rocket science.
Hi there, i have a 2013 spec C63 AMG with all the latest telematics etc.... i did a factory collectionthis September and spoke to the technicians regarding this, simply, iPhone 3 4 4s or 5 wont connect to comand online, they arent compatable due to the DNS/DUNS gated system that comand uses to access internet tether from your phone to the system. Bluetooth works fine but the online telematics wont. Forums suggest that theres a firmware upgrade or flash that Merc can do to the car to make it work , there isnt yet , well at time of writing anyway. To make it all work, Blackberry Bold 9700 and 9900 certainly work perfectly, i would think the lesser curve models will also as they use the universal DNS/DUNS system, that is compatable, apple have their own version so i'm told hence the uncompatability. (i have an iphone5!) frustrating. Great phone but the cars better !
Yes your iPhone 5 will work!! No problem. Just follow these instructions. You don't even need to be in the car to change the settings on your phone, do it now. :)
Regarding receiving text messages with an iPhone for Mercedes Benz it now works!!! A couple of things you need to know;
1. Need a 3GS or newer including 5.
2. Need iOS 6,
3. Pair iPhone to car,
4. Go to settings on the iPhone, select Bluetooth, tap on the blue arrow beside the MB connection,
5. Ensure 'notification' is on!
Voila, it works instantly!!!
If your Benz can display text messages the TXT MSG on the telephone display will no longer be grayed out!
In my 13 GLK it can only display and/or read out a text but you can use SIRI to respond by voice if you have a 4s or 5.
I think you miss the point.
You should be able to get onto the internet for searching, weather, etc. using the COMAND system by tethering to your mobile phone and using it for the internet connection. However, Mercedes uses the older DUN method of communiction rather than the newer PAN method used by Apple and other mobile manufacturers (It is not unique to Apple, all new mobile devices are now using PAN).
This is an issue that Mercedes needs to address as they are the ones using old, out-dated technology. The phone manufacturers have moved forward to a better communication method and Mercedes haven't.
If you are in Canada like me then you have zero support for Internet access.
I am disappointed also!!!
My 13 GLK was first listed with mBrace 2, but then some executive at MB decided not to include mBrace or even Teleaid!!
Love my Benz but less than impressed with MB executives that did not include any Telematics in Canada. And from what I understand it cannot be installed later, we are stuck with what we have forever.
Good thing I upgrade my vehicles even few years, hopefully by then some executive will make the necessary decisions to make telematics available!
Do I sound bitter? Like I said, love the car otherwise.
I connected my iPhone by Bluetooth and have notifications on but SMS messages do not show. The uprising isn't even available on the phone when connecting through the cradle.
Why is there not an app to enable DUN like you can get on Android?
I will give it a try, although the Mercedes site does not indicate SMS functions for the iPhone 4S. It seems odd that the official cradle would reduce functionality... then again, it's odd that Mercedes would let this nonsense drag on for years. It is a software issue that could and should have been resolved ages ago.
Has the iPhone ever had DUN?
No, iPhone has never used DUN.
Apple were the first to adopt the new PAN protocol AFAIK. This is why it is so crazy the Mercedes used DUN. Obviously, their tech guys weren't up to speed with what was happening in the tech world.
Hi guys.. I just had a February 2013 manufactured Mercedes C250 delivered in Australia. Frustrated by the error you're all referring to, I found this thread and quickly understood the problem (I own a digital agency that develops iOS and works with bluetooth) - and I think I've just stumbled across the answer, or at least 'some' answers.
Although I'm writing this post in May 2013, the 'Mercedes Benz Bluetooth Connectivity Guide' seems to have been populated with new car models for release from June 2013. Although these cars shouldn't even exist yet (unless these are time machines) - I thought I'd take a look at the iPhone5 compatibility for the future release - and whammo - 'Data connection to COMMAND online' is ticked! A glimmer of hope! At last! (this is marked as unavailble on C class models manufactured up to May 2013).
The MB bluetooth connectivity guide I'm referring to is available here.
It looks like they are accidentally publishing content prematurely (for that period, only 20 phones are currently shown) but hopefully this means that this is planned for the near future..
Will Apple iOS suddenly become compatible with your hardware/firmware? I really doubt it, not unless Apple find a safe way to step into the dark ages of DUN. It's extremely unlikely that any Apple software update will ever make your phone backwards compatible for your cars DUN protocol.
The million dollar question: Will your existing Mercedes Benz COMMAND hardware have the capability to be upgraded? Quite possibly.. From what I understand the hardware profile can accomodate it (already used for telephony and audio), so a firmware upgrade will hopefully become available to answer some of these complaints. Of course, that depends on the age of your command online system and how backwards compatible the firmware update actually is. Strategically, I doubt MB would bother upgrading anything approaching 3+ years, by that age they probably want you to upgrade the vehicle, not the firmware!
What would be really nice is if our conservative German friends would learn to monitor social media and respond more publically to these types of forums, or at least publish a meaningful update to disgruntled owners.
My total cost of ownership for the February 2013 built C250 Coupe (non-sport!) with MB will be close to 100K.. so yeah, it's fairly dissapointing to hear that any aspect of their technology is inadequate. I doubt I'm actually missing out on anything exciting with the MB internet connectivity, more than anything it's frustrating that something technological doesn't work in such a technically advanced vehicle - not forgetting either that dear Steve Jobs drove a Benz SL55 AMG!
If MB don't fix this (at least on recent models) I'll be sure to go over future demonstrators in a lot more detail. The proof that this is an MB issue and not an Apple issue really resides in the fact that other manufacturers such as BMW have been able to implement this successfully.
End rant. Good luck!
Hi 82
I purchased a C250 sport May 2011 and have just sold due to the problems you have with the online command system.
After visits to the dealer and 6 letters to Merc in Germany(3 unanswered) I have given up and as stated sold my C250 and the wife's A class NO MORE MERCEDES FOR ME-they don't value the customer one bit they don't care about after sales, once they have your money you are on your own and the dealers don't push the point with Germany.
Mercedes-nice product crap after sales why do the Germans not reply to a customers letter its down right rude-they won't get anymore of my hard earned cash(only purchased 5 since 2002 so just small fry).
