Wow, so not being able to connect the car to the internet via your phone is such a big disavantage that it outweighs all of the car's advantages? You must need to be connected really badly. I can't see I would use it that much. The same goes for the DVD player. I've only used it once in 18 months and that was more for novelty value so I could do without that as well. Looks like you'll have to change your username as well! ;-)

OR it is such a basic feature these days that other brands that get it right become more attractive despite an obvious desire to stay with MB (5 cars in 11 years for mercedesmike). When I purchased my car it was heavily promoted as having Comand Online - who would have thought that it didn't support the most popular smart phone and that the manufacturer would have no interest in keeping their tech up to date. It might not be enough to stop a purchase for many but it is a factor and a legitimate concern.
Just taken delivery of my new 2013 E220 (first MB btw ) and read a lot about the iPhone and data connection issues. However I can get it to work without the need for DUN / Jail Breaking or such.
I found that if you connect the iPhone (in my case iPhone 5 - iOS 6.1.3) to the car via Bluetooth as normal for phone and music then switch on the Apple Personal Hotspot from the settings menu on the phone the COMAND system picks up a data connection and works
I can now use the browser and apps perfectly and the speed isn't too bad either.
I hope this helps someone out trying to use all the features without the DUN error.
@AlexHarvey
What You describe only works for Comand Online NTG 4.5 Generation 3. That is only the new one, that is build in into the late 2013 models ... not my 2012 G-Class .. 😠😠😠
@ Bgk KIAL
Wait a minute. Are you saying, that
a) you have some sort of beta version of iOS7 on your phone? Or the final release?
b) iOS7 actually supports DUN ?!?
Please confirm. This would be BIG NEWS. And we would defenitly need to thank APPLE for getting this problem solved, not Mercedes, whose computer engineers don't lift their "derrière", to come up with an upgrade for old Comand untis...
I have a September 2012 CLS and it still doesn't work properly for me (iPhone 4s & 5 running IOS 6.1.3). The phone works fine for calls and contacts over Blutooth, but I can't receive texts on the car display nor can I connect to any of the online services; it still simply states "The connected phone does not support data communications" which really annoys me.
On a loosely related topic, I recently had my first service and when I enquired afterwards "Has the Nevigation software and maps been updated?" I was told there was no update for my car and that it was current. I then asked what about the annual software and maps update that was promised as part of the guarantee and, when I persisted, the service manager (are they all called managers?) eventually came back and said the updated disks would be available in a few weeks (pretty naf service). I then asked could I bring the car in for a quick update in a few weeks time and was told "Of course, but it will take a couple of hours." Has anyone ever heard anything so ridiculous as this? I could install Windows and Office on my home PC in less time than that.
Onve again, not impressed:-(
It is true, that Comand Online Updates can take meny hours.
The Dealership has the current software version including up-to-date maps on DVDs. They are some sort of "Master DVDs".
They use these DVDs to update the software, however the Comand unit needs to get hooked up and linked to servers in Germany in Order to receive a new valid registration key. This process can take hours, as I heard from several MB Mechanics
This is another example of how ridiculous "Digital Rights Managment (DRM)" hurdels do interfere with the comfort and interest of the regular, legal, paying customer.
If I was CEO of Daimler, I would get rid of hundreds of Bozos at the "Mercedes Telematics" Divison and start working with real hard- and software engineers... 😠
Just wanted to say thank you AlexHarvey and Bgk KIAL...
I've just taken delivery (last Saturday) of a new Mercedes GL AMG. And I couldn't figure it out...However on the 5S, indeed just enable local hotspot, and for text enable notifications via bluetooth, and bingo full integration with the Command online system...I've also added the 30pin adaptor for the new connector on the 5 and 5S to the media interface and all my wonderful cover art is showing...
Very happy, what a fantastic system fully integrated with thanks to you help...Sounds brilliant with the Harmon Kardon system in my 'beast' 🙂
I have just tried this on my 2013 C Class and I cannot get the car to see the iPhone 5S hotspot and I cannot see how to enable notifications via bluetooth on either the iPhone or the command system!
Question, can you supply an idiot guide to set up the car and iPhone 5S, please?
This really should be sorted by apple, and before people have a go at me for saying that.
1. Apple updates its IOS on a regulare basis with updates. Car manufactures can not keep up with that.
2. How often does a car get updated? Yearly if your lucky.
3. £35,000 for a car or the price of a phone, if I have to change one I know which loses.
So apple pull your finger out or lose my current and any future business.
And what exactly should be sorted by Apple Peter1969uk? As has been highlighted it works perfectly...

The only idiots guide that I know, just done my the iphone of my wife as well, switch on bluetooth on iphone, enable personal hotspot on iphone. Then in the car, connect the iphone via bluetooth first in the telephone settings, and there after go to the command online services and in the bottom left (on my GL) I can choose to use data via the iphone...That is all...
Just had my C220 serviced and when they brought it back they said the Comand system had been updated. I went into Comand Online and into the Providers list and selected my provider (O2). I noticed that there were new entries in there for iPhone Monthly Contract and iPhone PayG so thought it must be all sorted. I have a new 5S and turned on Local Hotspot. However, when going into Comand Online I still get the The Phone doesn't support Data message.
Ah well, I'm changing it for an Audi later this month. That wasn't the reason for my decison to change to Audi, by the way.
Clearly he meant that Apple could very easily implement the stack required to enable the iPhone to work and this is absolutely true.
Mercedes really should have sorted out iPhone connectivity long before this though and there really is no reason why the stack in the car could not be updated if there was a will to do so. It's only software/firmware.
Unfortunately setting up that stack also introduces the capability to copy files. It is just not going to happen, and it is also totally unnecessary. It is the same as that many car manufacturers incorporated the wrong bluetooth stack for exchanging contacts. Again they incorporated the full open stack that allows copying everything which isn't required for specific access like this. So whilst I agree, they can if they could, however that is fixing a symptom of someone elses shoddy implementation.
Odd that it doesn't work for you. Are you sure your data contract allows tethering as that could block the phone from doing this as well...
Well the new system uses the same stack so there is no reason it should be a problem for the previous system to use it.
It is nothing to do with tethering - the system from last year simply did not have the correct bluetooth profile to enable internet connection - it was hopelessly out of date and the issue had been raised for a few years. The issue many people have is that the system was advertised as having the internet feature but it was not at all well publicised that it did not work for what is one of the most popular phone models on the market.
The shoddy implementation was Mercedes - they were using a very outdated bluetooth profile and lagging way behind current (or even reasonably recent) technology. Their solution has been to upgrade the hardware and leave everyone from last year dead in the water. Many were told there would be an update - they were not told it would be a car update rather than a software or firmware update.
There really is no technical reason that it could not be done relatively painlessly.
Ok my car is a 2011 which I've had from new. So I don't have the newer version of Command Online. I don't want to change or even update the car, I've only put 10,000 miles on it.
And the reason I say for apple to sore it out is because its easier to run updates to a phone.
I do agree Merc has responsibilities, when I was sold the car. Part of the sales pitch was with the command online you can use the internet through a smart phone like the Iphone.
