There is (currently) no reason you have to use an e-mail address that belongs to your children to set up the MobileMe find my iPhone service on the phone.
You can set up the FMIPhone account on their phones using your Apple ID. Then if you set restrictions on their device, you can prevent them from changing the account settings and turning that off. The only way they would be able to get round it would be to turn off the phone entirely or wipe it.
@Kilted
Well, to do that, I would have to go to mail, calendar, contacts on each phone and add a new mobile me account - mine - and then activate the FMiphone with that account but that would mean that all my emails would go to the phone as well. Would certainly be a lot easier if, when you seek out an iphone with FMphone you could select or designate where you want the notification to be sent. Just my 2¢
Trying to understand the logic here...
Yes, you have to go to each phone and set it up. I have 2 devices and my wife has one. I have set up the MobileMe Find My iPhone account on ALL of them. That's all it does. The Apple ID is my gmail account. Always has been. Not @me.com or mac.com or whatever paid mobile.me accounts use these days. My e-mail is only set up on my 2 devices, not my wife's phone. IF an e-mail goes out, I'm the only one who will get it.
I understand what you're saying, but if you want to send an e-mail notification, no-one would have any way of knowing how many clients might be configured on mobile devices or laptops or whatever and it would be impossible to control where the notification went. Sending notification via text message to a designated number might be one way to do it, and it may be useful to be able to direct things like that.
You could set up a NEW account just for the free FindMyiPhone service and put that on the other devices. That way you don't have to have your e-mail go there... At least you could before MobileMe was declared dead. I'm not sure how that works now.
Yes you are correct - you could set-up a new Apple ID just for Find My iPhone.
We have a Mobile Me family pack.
My phone is set up with my mobile me, my sons with his. Both use a different itunes account for content.
I often need to check in and see where he is at and it's not all about 'spying'.
I need to be able to track the phone without sending him notifications.
Ideas?
You can set up more than one mobile.me account on the phone (I just tested this). Create a new one for find my iphone and set it up on his phone, then use restrictions to prevent changes to the accounts without a passcode. You'll be able to track him without his knowledge.
I don't have a paid mobileme account, but can't you select what comes over as you can with an exchange account? I can select mail, calendars, contacts and disable them selectively with exchange. I know FMIP can be turned on and off, I'd assume mail and such could be as well, meaning you could just set up your account and shut off the e-mail piece of it on his phone, couldn't you?
Kilted is correct I tested this and it is sort of the answer as long as the other phone users do not change the settings. The phone can be set with their email and you add an account with your own id and set it only for find my iphone and notifications will only go to your id and email.
Whilst I appreciate it was not what the service was designed for, the system did work a different way previously and whilst some people my be happy with the changes to findmyiphone other people are not and it would be nice to have an option to revert to the previous settings.
Google lost/stolen recovered ipad/iphone etc... you will see many instances where people have been able to recover there hardware using this app. This change will make it alot more difficult as chances are your apple id will be synced to the device you have lost. Therefore the thief will be receiving constant notifications he is being tracked and will be able to turn off or wipe or dispose of the device before it is found.
You can set up multiple MobileMe accounts on the phone, and set one of them as FMI only. However, this seems to prohibit the primary account from syncing their calendars, bookmarks and contacts. Were you able to find a way around that? I haven't been able to figure that one out.
I agree with you that it doesn't make any sense whatsoever to send an email to the device that's being tracked. It just gives the thieves notice and they'll turn off the feature.
Thanks!

I ran into the same problem. Trying to put two MobileMe accounts on the same phone works, but when I try to enable [just] FindMyPhone on the second account, it gives me a warning that syncing will be disabled on the primary account - which would be unacceptable since the primary account needs to sync everything.
Im 100percent sure there is no way to turn off the email notifictions at this time. but complain on the board above and in the future it will happen! 🙂
Guys,
The bottom line here is that people would like the ability to track other people without them knowing it.
Now whether you agree doing that is a conflict of interest or you have a moral or privacy issue with it or not does not mean that it shouldn't be an option nor does the idea that it wasn't originally designed for that purpose really matter. Lots of technology ends up being used for other things besides it's originally intended purpose.
I can tell you that I wouldn't particularly care to have my ex-girlfriend know my apple ID and be tracking me and my every move so she can be a crazy stalker person. On the other hand I very much am fine with having the ability to track my 16 year old amazing daughter when she's out doing her thing and the idea of it not sending her an email notification simply makes it a little less "Dad watching over her shoulder" but definitely makes it a safer situation and environment all the way around. Child abductions happen every single day and any device or amber alert etc that can give you any measurable edge in changing the course of a potentially terrible outcome is a very good thing.
A not so scary case in point:
My daughter's iPhone was stolen at a sleep over recently. Long story short.. I was able to track the phone and after chasing it down over the course of several days, I was able to with law enforcements help retrieve the iPhone. Yay.....!!! Remember, iPhones are not cheap.
Because we (may) fear someone using this technology for something bad doesn't mean the technology should not be made unavailable or restricted. People are to judge themselves and act respectfully. And we are in fact those people.
FYI: My daughter is fully aware that I have the ability to track her, that I totally trust her, and knows that she has the ability to track me as well anytime she wishes or needs to. Pretty cool!!! 🙂
FYI again: A little "fruit exec" told me that the reason for the email notification was in fact to protect themselves legally and not so much as a cool additional feature for the app. Interesting...
Hmmm you could setup a server side rule to trash the message upon arrival. Just a thought...
I have a Family Plan with my iPhone and my BF's and have Mobile Me Find my iPhone on both. To avoid having the Mobile Me notification that either phone is found, I have disabled MAIL Mobile Me notifications on his phone, but not mine. I have kept the Find My iPhone feature active for both. This is the only way I have found to stop my BF from getting a notification on his phone that his iPhone was found. I tried setting rules, but that didn't work. I have also noticed that the notifications only get sent when using the iPhone app and that it did not happen when using my laptop, but that's not always convenient.
The only disadvantage is if he used Mobile Me email, but he doesn't. It also does not prevent the notification from being sent to my phone which might prove inconenient if my phone is stolen. But I have not seen notifications lately, even when I have used the iPhone app. Has Mobile Me reconsidered?
Suggestion:
As you have access to the mobileme account, add a rule in webmail to trash all emails from noreply@me.com
seems to work.
