I am unable to update my apple tv gen2

When I try to update the Apple Tv, I recieve a message saying that the device cannot download the most recent update and that I should try again later. I have also had issues signing in to Netflix, but those issues seem to be unrelated.

Sorry if I missed this in the 10 pages of posts, but is there any explanation of why the ~300mb file goes through the download process completely before it is reported as "corrupted"? Is this a server issue or something else? Just trying to understand why some users are successful while others are not.

I've attempted this both via wireless and the USB method approximately 75 times over the last few days with no luck.

My understanding is that it may be both a server issue and a problem with the update file - some users who can't download the file through their ATV because of Apple server issues can get it through the micro USB/ITunes restore option instead (and some can't get it either way...). Then some of those users having got it find it's corrupted while some find it works!

I stated a few days ago that I was having the same problem as everyone else. I took my ATV into an Apple Store and they were able to get the download to work. The tech told me that he had to manually clear the cache on the server. Once he did that, the update worked. He said once you try and download the update and get the bad version, the update keeps trying to update off of that version. So once the cache is cleared, the update is forced to look for the update again. I am guessing going to the Apple Store will be the only way this will work.

Hope that helps.

It's a helpful post adam238 but not a helpful solution if the cost of petrol to your nearest Apple Store is close to the cost of the ATV, not to mention the lost time and inconvenience! Apple have got to sort this over-the-air, or by collect and return, and not get their customers to do the leg work. If there's a problem with the iCloud next year I guess I'll just have to pop on a plane to Cupertino to retrieve my files. 😉

I am about as loyal an Apple customer as they come, but this situation is getting ridiculous. I went to a lot of trouble to brag about how great this investment was going to be for out family and here I am, still trying to get an update to go through. After trying for hours over the air and via iTunes, I finally came across this thread.I feel lucky that it's only been a couple of days for me. I can't believe it's been over a week for some folks.

I think I should have bought a Roku.

Out of curiosity: how many of us having posted on this thread actually have a compelling reason for our impatience? Certainly not me: my ATV is working on the previous version and is actually just fine.

But apart from people with bricked boxes and those on a lower major version trying to upgrade to get new features such as AirPlay? Anyone in here agreeing with me that this all becomes a bit exaggerated? I mean, I agree that Apple doesn't handle this greatly currently, but until we know what the problem was demanding a compensation for having to wait to consume sounds a bit over the top to me.

The longer this thread goes on with no official explanation forthcoming, the more I drift towards the download of some dog-poop theory that apparently will need removal by a digital pooper-scooper before the sanitised update can be downloaded.

Those with access to an Apple store seemed to have got themselves sorted in this way.

This will not be the solution for the vast majority of owners. Those who. like me, have just taken delivery of an ATV will be particularly peeved.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

All this due to an update!! Amazing!

I agree to an extent Weder - the latest update doesn't actually add much and my ATV is functioning apart from repeated reminders to update - but I wasted a fair bit of time trying solutions that were never going to work and had to buy a third party cable. That alone deserves a little good will compensation and for those with non functioning ATVs they certainly deserve more. As a new purchaser I want the ATV to be fully functioning from the start - even though the latest update is not that important future ones will be (AirPlay mirroring for the iPad2 for example). And if I don't raise it with Apple now but wait until an important update come out Apple will wonder why I waited so long to tell them...

Because with SHA or MD5 the hash algorithm is applied over the entire file contents and so verification of the hash also entails access to the whole file.

Regarding why some are seeing corrupted files and other are not, many possibilities here, e.g.:

  • The file is not syncing across multiple load-balanced update servers, so users are accessing different files.
  • The syncing process itself is corrupting the file.
  • Corruption while downloading the file (though TCP should detect any errors and retransmit corrupt segments).
