I am unable to update my apple tv gen2

When I try to update the Apple Tv, I recieve a message saying that the device cannot download the most recent update and that I should try again later. I have also had issues signing in to Netflix, but those issues seem to be unrelated.

I do agree with Weder: I have sympathy with those whose ATVs are not working at all or have issues, but for the rest of us this really boils down to the frustration of the device telling us it 'wants' to update and that process then not working. I have ATVs with 4.1.1 and 4.2.2 (updated some time ago with no issues) and they BOTH do all the things I bought them to do.

If they were ordinary bits of consumer electronics, I'd be none the wiser that a later version even existed. I am sure there is a more recent version of the electronics in my washing machine, dishwasher and motor vehicle, but because they don't tell me there is, I do not care. It is interesting how a 'feature' so quickly becomes a 'burden' when it goes wrong.

As for talk of compensation ... depending on how the trade practices legislation is written where you are, i'd expect the only recourse to be return to place of purchase for a refund if the device is not 'fit for purpose'. For those OCD enough to have tried the update dozens of times (or more as some claim!) my advice is to get a different hobby. One option I highly recommend is reading a copy of Douglas Adams' (RIP) book 'Mostly Harmless'. Take particular note of the passage about the herring sandwich obsessed robots (which can be found here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A857874 ) and consider whether you are the robot and the update is the sandwich ... or is it the other way around.

We miss you D.N.A. :-)

Re: the posts that say does we really need this update. The answer for some of us is YES. I purchased a brand new Apple TV2 4 days ago from the largest Apple retailer in my area (no Apple stores within 100Km). It came installed with 4.1. Yes, 4.1.

And so after spending many, many hours trying to fix the issue of no video being sent from my iPad to my new Apple TV, I finally realised it wasn't going to work unless I had at least 4.2.

But the bottom line is: we would not be continually sending messages to this post, if Apple just admitted they had a problem and posted it on the Apple TV Support site.

PS The download failed again 10 minutes ago.

Sure, OTH, and as I said, I have sympathy for those whose devices are bricked (through no fault of their own, eg power outage during an update? ... jailbreakers do so at their own risk IMO) and those whose devices exhibit the problems that the update is purported to address.

Incidentally, I am not sure about iOS versions, but my ATV with 4.1.1 airplays from my iPad etc. I seem to recall this feature came with 4.1. See here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4448 .

I would hate you to be chasing the upgrade as the solution to your problem if it might actually be something else.

I do agree that it is well past time for Apple to post something ... but I also want world peace and any number of other things that i know I cannot have. Now, where's that herring sandwich ...?

Well I bought mine for the AirPlay feature mostly (cause I can get Netflix on my xbox). Bought it 5 days ago and realized my 4.1.1 device didnt fully employ the AirPlay feature so tried to update. Thats why I wanted the update, for the device to do what it was advertised to do and what I bought it to do. Taking Apple more than 10 days (and counting) to fix this problem is ridiculous. Makes me wonder if the new icloud service is going to do what it says it will do when just trying to fix an update has become such an issue to overcome.

I can confirm this works in Australia, (see below) Thanks KC.

I also didn't jailbreak and won't recommend jailbreaking, just use the clean file.

Worked perfectly and very glad i upgraded.

He posted a clean version of the ipsw. I didn't jailbreak but used the clean file (not off of apples servers to update).

Verified working.
