I'm sorry Bruce, but I can't help but feel your anger is misdirected. After all, how come Adobe felt the MXF format worthy of it's own import templates and native editing capability, yet Apple continues to ignore it? This is nothing more than Apple expecting the world to conform to it, instead of supporting their users.

Hi Bruce,

Thanks. I sent an email this morning and within 2 hours got this response. Any thoughts on it? I'm new to FCP X and video. I'm setting up a green screen studio in my office to create corporate training videos that will be online as well as DVD.

Bought the Panasonic TM900 and am not completely thrilled, but I also can't figure out how to use the best 1080p. A colleague is happy with the Cannon XF100, but he's also using Adobe, which I don't want to learn. I'm also considering the Cannon Vixia hf g10 because it will go directly into FCP X, but it doesn't have the 4:2:2 like the XF100.

Thanks to Pika! Am considering your workaround. I'm such a newbie though, I'd really prefer to find something that is super simple. Has anyone tried Clipwrapper?

Here's their response below. Would love to hear any thoughts on viability of this compared to Pika's solution or Clipwrapper.

Best,

Mary

Thank you for contacting Canon product support. We value you as a Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you.

When HD camcorder video is compatible with Final Cut Pro:

1. Connect HD camcorder to your Mac, and it shows up as a drive on the desktop

2. Hit Cmd-Shift-8 to open the Log and Transfer window(FCP 6 or above)

3. The clips in HD camcorder will be ready for being imported to FCP for editing

When HD Camcorders videos are not Recognizable by Final Cut Pro
If the MTS/M2TS files grey out when you try to import them to FCP, you need to convert them to FCP friendly formats. Of course, to do the video conversion, you need a professional app. Here the professional MTS to FCP Video Converter for Mac is strongly recommended. With it, just in a few clicks you could successfully upload HD videos to Final Cut Pro.

Download Intel version

Note: This MTS Video Converter for Mac Supports MTS/M2TS files from a variety of HD camcorders like: Canon VIXIA HF200, Canon FS200, Canon VIXIA HFS100, Canon VIXIA HG21, Panasonic HDC-HS300, Panasonic HDC-HS20, Sony HDR-CX100, Sony DCR-SR47, JVC GZ-HD40, JVC GZ-HD10 etc.

1. Add MTS files to the programDrag & drop M2TS/MTS files to the program. Or go to "File" menu, choose "Add Video/Audio files" to locate the M2TS/MTS files you want to add. See the interface above, if you want to merge several video clips into a large file, just check "Merge into One File".
2. Select the output video formatWhen it comes to choosing the output format for these target videos, you have several options. You can choose Final Cut Pro friendly format, like MP4, as the output format. Or directly choose "Final Cut Pro". The app has already optimized the video settings for Final Cut Pro.

Note: If you just want to import certain segments of the MTS/M2TS clips for editing, you can trim the clip before conversion.

3. Start to convert MTS/M2TS clips to Final Cut Pro.Hit the "Convert" button to convert these recorded HD videos to Final Cut Pro friendly formats on the Mac (Snow Leopard, Lion included). Just in a second, it is done. Then you can import these videos to Final Cut Pro.

This smart MTS to FCP Video Converter for Mac can automatically switch off the computer when the conversion is done, so you don't need to wait around during the conversion. iSkysoft MTS to FCP Video Converter for Mac does the video conversion like a charm and the output files will maximally preserve the quality of your original MTS/M2TS clips. Now you can import the output files to Final Cut Pro to create your own masterpiece.
I hope this information is helpful to you. Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance with your future purchase. Thank you for choosing Canon.

I also found this information on Amazon about the Cannon XF 100 and compatibility with FCP X. Not sure if it's suggesting that 720 is the max for compatibility?

  1. When ingesting clips that were recorded using the following video configurations:
    1. 50Mbps (4:2:2), 1280x720, 30P.
    2. 50Mbps (4:2:2), 1280x720, 25P or
    3. 50Mbps (4:2:2), 1280x720, 24P,
The clips cannot be used in Final Cut Pro if Native is selected in the ‘Transcode to” (“Target Format”) column. Select instead one of the ProRes422 options.
  2. In the Log and Transfer window, relay clips (clips recorded spanning two or more CF cards) are not handled as one clip but are instead treated and ingested as separate, independent clips.
  3. When ingesting clips with Native selected in the “Transcode to” (“Target Format”) column, a name other than Canon will appear in the Compressor field. However, the clips will be correctly ingested.

I spoke with Canon Customer Care again today and got the same answer as October: (1) Keep e-mailing customerfeedback@cits.canon.com, and (2), we don't know anything. He did add that he is sure someone at Canon must be working on it. I tried to suggest that he e-mail the department that wrote the plug-in for FCP 7 and ask if anythingis in the works for FCP X, but I was interrupted halfway through that sentence with the answers above.

Hi All -

I too am a FCPX and XF100 (and 60D) user, so I share in everyone's frustration. Like others, I am thankful to Pika for his workaround. In the interim, it's a great solution.

I've also contacted both Apple and Canon to figure out which company is responsible for developing the fix. But, reps at both companies customer support couldn't (or wouldn't) provide any specifics as to if or when.

BTW, when I called B&H (where I bought my XF100), the rep I spoke to in their video department rudely insisted that Apple will NEVER provide support for the XF100 and have abandoned professional editors in pursuit of the "masses." I didn't buy his claim, but he was a real a$$h*** - that much I know.

FCP X just released an update, but I didn't read anything about the support we all are looking for.

Hi Jon,

Where do you have this information from ? Any official statements from Canon ?

It's not that I don't believe you - but I have a beta of a new version of XfcpX, rewritten from scratch for testing this weekend. But to be honest, if Canon *really* are getting their act together, I'd prefer not to waste any further time on this and stop the development :-)
