PikaFoto.. this works really well. Thanks for your hard work. I don't usually use the Canon XF Utility software because I don't like working direct from the CF card. I would rather copy the card to a hard drive then remove the card from the reader before I start doing anything with the files. That way you have the files, untouched on the CF card which you can delete later on and you work with the copies on the hard drive. WIth this in mind is there anyway to get your XFCPX utility to work from a copy of the card on my hard drive which hasn't been put through the Canon software. Hope this makes sense.

Great work.

Hello JohnJames,

It makes perfect sense. To start with - no :-) In time, I would like to provide options to handle cards, copy etc... but right now, it's not the most important stuff to work, sorry :-)

That being said - the workflow you describe, fits well with the XF utility. It does not have work directly on your cards.

The workflow I propose, is to:

- Start XF Utility, then go to File -> Preferences. Inthere you can setup your backup folder (Which will then be the Master folder inside my program, XfcpX).

- Next, you plugin the camera (Or put the CF card in your reader).

- Your card shows up in XF Utility (CFA / CFB if in camera, something else if from reader)

- You then right click the card you want, and select "Backup Media". This will not touch the files on the card, but simply copy the entire card to the location you specified earlier.

- You can then take out the card, which still have the files intact, and save it until you are happy with the files

- Then, start XfcpX and point the Masters folder to the XFUtility Backup Folder and voilá: You can process your files, while still having the original backup on your cards.

Does THAT makes sense? :-)

Hi PikaFoto.. this is how I have had it working. It works great like this.

I just like keeping any software programs (canon utility) away from my files (sounds strange I know) until I have them on my hard drive. If the software (Canon utility) gets a bug it can cause problems with the files on your cards. I think you are on to a winner with XFCPX, hope you get somthing back for you time solving this issue.

thanks.

Rune, THANK YOU. This is so elegant... it just works!

The only problem I had with installation was a Canon MXFUtility installer issue on my primary machine. It installed fine on my laptop but my (almost 4yearold) Mac Pro just refused to install the utility, saying that I didn't have Admin privileges (which of course I did). After spending 2 hours on the phone with Canon support I called a friend of mine who's a unix expert and we reverse-engineered the Canon install from my laptop and then hand-installed all the components on my Pro. Worked fine, after 4 hours total nuisance. Installing XfcpX went absolutely smoothly and it's PERFECT. Canon ought to be ashamed of themselves for not handling this.

I just sent a $15 donation to you on your Paypal account. I'll check in every once in awhile for updates, for sure.

You're the greatest! Onward to more creative pursuits now.

PS: For your amusement, here's a little timelapse video I made with the XF100 by transcoding files with Media Encoder: http://vimeo.com/27744328 I absolutely love the XF100 and am looking forward to doing alot with it now that I can get the data easily into FCPX.

Hello everyone, I am new to this site and am really appreciative of all the great information I have been able to obtain through everyones posts. I am in the same situation as I have an xf 300 and 100 and for the life of me cant get all my files into final cut X. It's about to drive me crazy! I have taken the steps to download PikaFoto's workflow tool for the xf files but I am still having problems understanding how to use the program. Thankyou for providing this program as I am grasping for anything I can to get through this problem. Can I take the files directly into this workflow tool or do I need to go through my xf utiliy program? I just need a basic process to go from my camera to final cut X. A few of you guys have aparently been able to make this work with the same problem so I know it has to be something my tiny brain has not been able to process yet. Any help would really be great. Thanks
