Clam Down...Apple says missing features coming soon.

I am sorry that all the "pros" are over reacting to the release of FCPX. Instead of being civil they have been quite rude and dumb. If all you guys clam down a second and read the news you would know that almost every single missing pro feature for FCPX will become availible via update rather soon. Apple and several news outlets have made this very clear. SDI, EDL, XML. All those features are coming very soon. Maybe they should not have released it so soon, for that they might deserve a bit of scorn, but the stuid ranting needs to stop. You people are supposed to be professionals and you are acting like children.

Complain away as much as you want. Demand the features we need. But try doing so in a way that doesn't make you come off looking like and a@@.

Now who's being unprofessional? Just because you're an "editor" doesn't mean you're hot ****. I would call my Aunt who makes slideshows an editor, and she still has trouble sending emails!

I am a PROFESSIONAL editor. I work EVERY DAY on FCP 7 and make a living with it. This is why we are all upset. This is potentially ruining our way of life, not our hobbies.

Explain how FCP X will help me produce broadcast quality edits? This is the problem; the diluting of a once great profession with a bunch of self entitled hobbyists who think because they put some video to music and throw in some titles they can call themselves an editor.

Sure, we all "started" somewhere, but you won't get very far with your attitude.

Let's be very clear about one thing:

Apple has not had merely since the April meet-up in Las Vegas to get this release ready.

They've had since 2008 to get it ready.

It ain't ready.

1. No way to set the Scratch Disc. Which means there's no way to assign everything for a single project to go into one project folder. This makes porting a project to another facility a nightmare. It also makes media management after a project is finished virtually impossible. How do you delete all the files pertaining to a particular project if they're all mixed together with the files of every other project? Ridiculous.

2. No way to export OMF files. Q: How do you do audio sweetening? A: You can't.

3. No XML export options.

4. Where are the third party effects plug-ins? Hmmmmm?

5. No multi-cam support.

Look, I'm not complaining. I suspect all of these issues will be addressed. In fact, I'm not yet completely convinced that some of these things aren't already built into this release, but are just hidden from obvious view (obvious, at least, to those who knew where to look for them in the previous version). But with no explanation from Final Cut, and no tutorials available, we're left to spend the next week reading the effing manual.

As if we have time for that.

That's the answer to your training. Also, media management is insanely better in FCP X than FCP 7. Follow the tutorial. It is extremely helpful. It explains everything and it all makes sense.

A quick rundown of how media management works:

No more capture scratch. It now goes under "Final Cut Events" folder, which can designated to any drive. In this sense, it is almost identical to how Avid manages its files. "Projects" are more like sequences, and sequences do not exist anymore.

Also, I have no doubt that the other things will come in due time. For now, stick with FCP 7 for those missing features. You were editing just fine before FCP X came out, so what's the difference?

Again, watch the tutorials. Spend the $40 bucks. You won't regret it. I was stumped on FCP X too. But the tutorials explain EVERYTHING and it all makes total sense

The other problem is (as I detailed in much detail elsewhere) what happens when FCP7 is no longer supported? Will we all have to keep an old machine with an old OS for those times when we need to tweak an old project?

Imagine getting Office 2011 and not being able to open all your old Word 95 files.

Imagine getting Photoshop CS5 (which was also a total rebuild) and not being able to open your Photoshop 7 files.

First, who's to say you won't be able to upgrade? It was just released 2 days ago. it's version 10.0. Version 10.1 could solve everything for all we know.

Second, regarding your microsoft office 2011 upgrading '95 Word files, I have tried such things in the past and lets just say it's like betting on a horse race. It's a total gamble of something that old upgrading to the newer version of the said program (My experience with this was with Intuit QuickBooks, and it did NOT end well...I assume this could happen with any old file)

Well, NightNinjaPDX, I guess LA's where it's at man, and I guess your 45 points on this forum have been generated fairly recently. Good on you.

But this isn't about the old guard getting boned by Apple or found wanting by up-and-comers like yourself, it's about a long line of professional tools, of which I and others have owned every version, about which people I respect have written books you may not have read, that probably predates your professional career by some years. People have built careers and business with this stuff, only to find the way forward is a souped up consumer tool they can use for YouTube, and no, viral campaigns aside, there's not much that's Pro about YouTube.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but a background in iMovie won't get you an editing job anywhere.

However, 64 bit is good. Rendering is a killer... and not rendering or needing to render is great. Can't import your 32 bit project (FCP7) into 64 bit FCPX? You can't do that in Premiere either.

Yes you CAN !!! You can open FCP7 projects in Premiere Pro very easily! It's ..... called ....... XML ! If Apple had simply added the XML import to FCP-X a lot of problems could have been solved because we could have created multiclip sequences in FCP7 (having used audio sync that actually works - e.g. PluralEyes, instead of the joke we've been given in FCP-X) and edited checkerboard style. But no, since the iMoive codebase couldn't import FCP files, neither can FCP-X, which has been said many times is really iMovie X as it stands today.

Background rendering also seems to PAUSE while I'm actually working on things. Yeah, that's going to be really fast renders when that happens.

No that's not true! Its very easy to go from 32->64 bit, in 9 out of 10 cases you just recompile; I have done lots of 32->64 bit converts back in 1996 for Alpha and it was mostly a piece of cake.

So I don't understand why they didn't do this.

Dream on. I've had to move several projects from 32 to 64 bit. It's really NOT that easy! You have to visit EVERY LINE of code to see how it's manipulating variables. Any line could screw things up badly.

I find Final Cut Pro X to be real good. I used FCP 7 and iMovie and this new release is very good. I don't see why people on here are being so unprofessional and disrespectful. Come on people grow up.

It's no wonder you like FCP-X if your projects are simple enough to be editable on iMovie!!!! This IS iMovie with a little more speed and bells and whistles. If my projects could have been completed on iMovie I wouldn't have invested in (multiple seats of) FCP 7 (and the rest of the suite).

FCP-X is woefully lacking the features needed by the vast majority of people who make their living with software like FCP 7. Apple have only addressed the lowest common denominator, the 'simple' project brought in from iMovie. I wouldn't have minded them being able to import iMovie projects (it makes sense if your' trying to get $299 out of some one normally spending < $20), but without FCP-7 support it's a premature baby delivered way too early.
