Will OSX Lion still support FCP Studio?

With the disaster that FCP X is turning out to be, is there any indication as to whether or not any versions of FCP Studio will still work with OS X Lion? I have a sneaking suspicion that it will not, considering the approach Apple has taken with the FCP X release, but I haven't heard anything definitive yet. I'm hoping Apple will come out with some kind of statement regarding FCP X soon, because the way this release has been handled is absolutely bizzare. If there is no intention of continuing to support the professional community, just say so, and everyone can move on to something else.

i tried to find the prefs and couldn't find them either after installing Lion.

...snip...

In Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion), Apple has decided to hide the user's Library

folder, here is how to permanently show it:

Run the Terminal application and type the following:

chflags nohidden /Users/<Username>/Library

Now may be the time to start using Digital Rebellion's preferences manager...

Patrick, (others please chime in too), as an editor, someone who has tried FCx, and Lion, I'm curious as to how you find Lion's general environment with respect to your editing workflow, pro's / con's. Have you returned to FCS3? Do you find Lion to be (or do you think it will be, in the near future) an overall improvement and positive asset to your daily editing work?

I know it's early and Lion is only a day old, but I would value your assessment. Thanks. 🙂

my fc 7 project is 15.7mb. I'm editing DSLR footage converted to Pro Res HQ.

I'm editing in 1920x1080 23.98 pro res hq at the highest quality YUV setting, even downgrading to 8bit, doesn't help.

I even disabled all my plugins, but that didn't help either.

I'm using a quad core 2.2 ghz macbookpro i7 with 8GB ram and graid 7200rpm external drives.

When I try to render it gives me "general error" and sometimes "out of memory" error

I'm big into confirming. ; )

Well, Mitchell... we've got one good and 2 or 3 bad by my count. StikeMernoff is happy (above) but several others in this thread, toward the end are having major problems that have left them dead in the water, unable to finish projects that are bread n butter.

I'm becoming more "gun-shy" as the days pass. Lion compatibility with FCS3 is not looking so good. If the design and development for Lion pro app compatibility (FCS3, Avid, Prod. Prem.) is in any way representative of the same engineering team that came up and out with FCx, I think we may be in for a lot of trouble going forward w/ OSX. You certainly couldn't convince me to put Lion on one of our editing bays right now.... I know, I know.... "it's a new 64 bit build" ... sounds eerily familiar... 😐

yes, that's what I'm thinking now too. They probably made FC X fully compatible with Lion, but for some reason FC 7 is not. I'm sure all the other apps in Lion work fine. I've seen other programs give themselves "Lion" updates, so maybe FC 7 needs a "Lion" update too.

Well, according to Apple in an officially released statement, specifically to FCS3 they said that FCS3 will run on Lion, with all FCS3 updates installed. Now there's a thought... but I'm sure you've done it... have you installed all the updates for FCS3 apps?

yes. i saw they stated that before i installed Lion!

unfortunately, it did not hold true for me. My Fc was 7.03.

I did notice that if I made new sequences, they worked fine, but copying and pasting my old sequences into new sequences did not work.

So I suspect that maybe new fc7 projects may work in Lion, but if the FC 7 project was created in sno leopard and then continued in Lion, that's when the probs hapoen. At least, that's what happened to me.

WELL... I NEVER.... Are you in some way insinuating or implying that Apple has in some way not given full disclosure, or been less than forthcoming with regard to capability or functionality? 😕.... tisk tisk.... the very nerve... 😁

ROfL. i think next time before i upgrade, I'm going to time machine backup and then restore from that after doing clean reinstall of previous OS if I have to! Or at least, wait for confirmed reports from other final cut users that it is indeed compatible. In my excitement of hearing Lion RAWR, I mistakenly let myself be the guinea pig on this one! ;)

The success rate is probably higher than this small sample, since it's the people with negative experiences who tend to be inspired to comment. Nevertheless, it's scary. I feel no need to upgrade to Lion and bring on a world of pain, but I am getting a new Mac Pro next month, so.... Maybe by then, someone will have discovered that all you need to do is make sure the WORK CORRECTLY checkbox is selected.

Will OSX Lion still support FCP Studio?
