Safari can't load Apple.com, but Chrome can

I am running Snow Leopard version 10.6.8 and Safari 5.0.5. A problem has developed with Safari. It loads most sites just fine, but some sites, including Apple.com, never load. The error is:

Request Timeout

The server timed out while waiting for the browser's request.

Reference #2.76e2ea3f.1309225081.0

Yet Chrome loads Apple.com instantly!

Here's another error message I've never seen:

ERROR

The requested URL could not be retrieved

While trying to retrieve the requested URL the following error was encountered:

Connection Lifetime Expired

Footprint has terminated the request because it has exceeded the maximum connection lifetime.

Go to your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Security tab.

Click: Show Cookies.

Type apple in the search field, click Remove All then click Done.

Now empty the Safari cache from the menu bar then restart your Mac.

Try http://www.apple.com/

Gary --

I read/scanned almost all of the first three pages of hits on that link I posted for you. I didn't understand a lot either, and many were meant for programmers. The error that you, and others, get is very strange, and something is taking your URL and diverting them. It is not a function of Safari, or your Mac.

Footprint is a "Spyware" app.

It seems to only work on PCs. And somehow this thing is messing up your browsing experience.

Curiouser and curiouser...

I may do a reinstall anyway, just to get ready for Lion. If the problem persists after a reinstall, than it must be elsewhere on my network, I suppose, although my room mate is not seeing the problem. There is also a stinky old PC on the network, owned by the 3rd room mate...

Gary, before you reinstall or anything, create a new user account on your Mac. (In System Preferences >Accounts > then select the PLUS sign on the bottom left of the pane. You've have to enter you Admin Password. Go ahead and name it "Test." When logged into the new account, try Safari, and the sites that are now giving your problems.

Does the new account work?

If so, there's a problem in your user's account.
