AppleMobileDeviceService.exe is hogging up to %50 of CPU

This just started happening... I have not connected iPhone to my Windows machine, but the AppleMobileDeviceService.exe service just decided to start being a glutton... Any one know why??

Thanks

I'm having the same problem. Mine stays at a consistent 25% CPU usage unless I stop the process in Task Manager. This is ridiculous, and with not a word from Apple indicating how to fix this problem or that they're even working on a solution, I'm not inclined to get even more dependent on them. I was considering buying an iPhone and an iPad2 in the next few months, but I think I'll skip that until Apple fixes this problem. I'm going to have to uninstall iTunes (and all of the other related programs that I never use - what is Bonjour, anyway??) from my computer, too, and just reinstall it when AND IF I decide to buy more music.

I solved this problem by exactly following the uninstall process. For a couple of weeks, anyway. Started happening again this morning -- suddenly, for no apparent reason. Hogging 12.5% of my CPU again (I can tell b/c my laptop's fan speed increases -- 2011's version of putting an egg on top of the CPU, circa mid 70's).

The easiest solution, as I mentioned above, is to use ProcessExplorer to suspend the process -- and then resume it when you're ready to do a sync.

rwpritchett, I'm not giving up my iPhone or iPad b/c of this problem, personally. Both work flawlessly otherwise for me. This is annoying, but not a dealbuster (for me). iTunes is by far the best device syncing software I've ever used, and I've been around the block a few times. [And I sure ain't no Apple fanboy -- I call 'em as I see 'em.]

Same problme with iTunes 10.5 as with 10.4. Running Vista Business (32).

I was able to resolve this by opening Services and changing the AppleMobileDeviceService startup to "Automatic (delayed start)". Once I rebooted my system, both AMDS and iTunes behaved normally.

I then was able to backup and sync my iPhone and iPad without a problem. When finished, I closed iTunes and the CPU usage went back to normal

Hope it helps.

I'm having this issue again. On my previous iTunes upgrade, following the instructions on deinstalling everything in the right order and then reinstalling iTunes fixed the problem.

After upgrading iTunes to 10.5, the Apple Mobile Device Service is taking up 100% of the CPU (old computer, with just one core).

Neither deinstalling/reinstalling or JerryFromKrakow's solution works for me. After installing an older version of Application Support, iTunes wouldn't start complaining of missing APIs.

I'm running Windows XP.

For now I've set the service for a manual start and that at least allows me to start iTunes, but I'm not able to synchronise my iPhone.

Any other suggestions?

I spent a few hours yesterday uninstalling and reinstalling per the Apple directions, still I had the problem. Then something strange - I noticed that my gui user interface for PCTools with Antivirus was missing - the antivirus was still executing, but I couldn;t access the gui. Thus, I decided to reinstall PCTools and went to their website where I was greeted with a statement that there was a know problem with iTunes and to download the update. I downloaded the PCTools with Antivirus install and redid the install -- everything is now running perfect, my machine is much more response and the Apple Mobile Device Service is usually at 0%. I suspect the PCTools had something that was causing the Apple software to continually run trying to accomplish it's task. This might be true for other anti-virus and or anti-spyware system monitoring software. Here's the PCTools link for the problem http://goo.gl/58niq

Since an earlier poster didn't think many people were affected I'll chime in and say I'm stuck too, as 2.1.5 (the version of apple mobile device service that comes with the shiny new iTunes) just sits at a CPU's worth of activity (i.e. 50% as I have two, so it'll be single threaded and eating the whole CPU) and I can't sync or upgrade to iOS5 (d/l'd it okay though, not sure that makes me feel any better).

I can confirm the comments above that reverting to 1.5.2 no longer helps as 2.1.5 has extra functionality that the latest iTunes requires.

BTW doubters type applemobiledeviceservice.exe into Google and see what the auto-complete (i.e. popular) searches are...

Fingers crossed.

Oh, and Foo!

I am running Windows XP and had this issue for several weeks where AppleMobileDeviceHelper was at 50% of my CPU capacity. Also, iTunes could not go to the iTunes Store. I followed the instructions above to uninstall all of the Apple software in order as suggested on the site. Reinstalled the new version of iTunes (10.5) and same problem. The uninstall / reinstall did NOT fix anything.

I saw another suggestion and tried this from a command prompt: netsh winsock reset

Rebooted and everything works again! This was a small miracle after trying so many things. This took about 5 minutes to try. Read more about it here.

Good luck!

Figured out my issue!

Background:

Win 7 64 bit

Itunes 10.5 public release

Iphone 4

Symptoms:

Iphone 4 backup/sync hanging

Itunes Store was blank

Fix:

Uninstalled AVG Family Safety (like net nanny, an online website monitoring app for my children)

ran command promt as administrator, typed netsh winsock reset

Rebooted

That fixed boy my backup and itunes store issue. My suggestion is if you have anything like this, Norton Online Security, Net Nanny, AVG Family Safety, Safe Eyes, Covenant Eyes, etc. you should start by uninstalling it and see if it fixes your problems. Hope this helps someone.

I found out that in my case it was Integard, an Internet filter. After unistalling it and resetting winsocks AMDS stopped hogging the CPU and iTunes synchronises fine.

The problem is, I need to keep Integard, as it is the computer my kids use.

This only started happening after iTunes 10.1.4, I had installed Integard before then and there were no issues.

This points to some change in the Apple code that is making it clash with net filters, doesn't it?

Cheers
