AppleMobileDeviceService.exe is hogging up to %50 of CPU

This just started happening... I have not connected iPhone to my Windows machine, but the AppleMobileDeviceService.exe service just decided to start being a glutton... Any one know why??

Thanks

Wow, this worked for me too!!! So I'll restate it here:

Start - Run type CMD and hit Enter

in the DOS window type: netsh winsock reset

and hit enter. Then reboot. DONE!

Twice before over the last 3 months I had this problem where my ipod sync would hang in "backing up ipod" and both times I ended up uninstalling itunes and then deleting the entire Apple directory under Program Files\Common Files and then after reinstalling itunes (a couple of times) it worked again.

This time it didn't, but this simple fix worked. Also, MUCH easier!!

It might not work for everyone but I recommend trying it!

Thanks Folks!

I'm cross-posting this post I made in another thread as I think it's important:

I did get iTunes fixed (well, so far) by the "netsh" command, but is does unhook a lot of networking stuff, some of which I might regret. Amongst others it stopped my Anti-Virus monitoring internet traffic (!!!). I've put that back but do wish I'd got a list of what was there beforehand so I could see what else was trashed.

System: Windows 7 SP1 x64, Upgrade to iTunes 10.5.0.142, blank iTunes store.

Tried uninstall/reinstall in the correct order according to Apple support article. [no success]

Tried running the netsh winsock reset. [no success]

Uninstalled AVG 2011. [no success]

Uninstalled Bsecure CloudCare. [success]

CloudCare was likely reconfiguring winsock settings during the restart following the netsh winsock reset command.

Same problem about month!! But with

netsh winsock reset

cpu usage goes down to normal und syncronising my iphone works

My system:

Windows XP SP3 - Panda Anti-Virus

Now I have to give that command every time, before I shut down my laptop. So I put

it in the automatically script via an ".bat" file.

You have to give that command as an administrator.

Message to Apple: Change that problem!

ALWAYS had problems with slow since I updated iTunes to version 10. So I did a downgrade to 9.2.1 and was using it until yesterday, when I needed to upgrade to 5.10 in order to upgrade the IOS to version 5.0 of my newly purchased iPhone 4.

And again, I had these problems. I got to format the drive, reinstall Windows, I almost gave up when I finally found this topic!

Thank you so much! If it were not for your help, probably could not use all the features of my device and would have to buy another PC

I'm a consultant and I've had this problem with four Windows 7 64-bit systems that I'd upgraded to iTunes 10.5. No problems with 10.4.x. I tried the uninstall/reinstall and winsock reset. Neither resolved the problem. AppleMobileDeviceService.exe still ate CPU at 30-40% constantly. I also wasn't able to upgrade the devices to iOS 5.0. Since many said winsock reset worked I dug a bit deeper. Using Sysinternals AutoRuns utility. I found several WinSock catalog entries pointing to invalid filepath. I used AutoRuns to remove those bad entries and rebooted. I now have functional iTunes 10.5 and I've upgraded one device to iOS 5.0. Hopefully I've saved someone else a lot of grief.

I found out that in my case it was Integard, an Internet filter. After unistalling it and resetting winsocks AMDS stopped hogging the CPU and iTunes synchronises fine.

The problem is, I need to keep Integard, as it is the computer my kids use.

This only started happening after iTunes 10.1.4, I had installed Integard before then and there were no issues.

This points to some change in the Apple code that is making it clash with net filters, doesn't it?

Cheers

Same here. Once i went to 10.4.1 i could not access the store, I went the full unistall / resinstall path which worked, buit once i upgraded to 10.5 it was broken again and the uninstall / reinstall didn;t fix it.

When I disabled the Integard service from loading and ran the netsh winsock reset and restarted, all was good.

I've raised a case with Race River to see what they suggest.

Hi w1nstrel,

Within the last 5 days someone (can't remember which Apple support thread it was on, sorry!) has discovered that the root of this horrendous problem actually lies in the interaction between the AppleMobileDeviceService.exe and a number of anti-virus programs. These include PC Tools Spyware Doctor, Norton, Symantec and a host of other "big names".

I'd had the problem on a desktop machine. The problem is now solved, but what a Sherlock Holmes you have to be to sort it out!

I've used Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus for years (a very good program, BTW) and was running a recent version, 8.0.0.623. I'm also using a laptop at the moment which still has this V8.0.0.623 on it, and it's just done a "Smart Update" and tells me the program is up to date.Eeer, Excuse me!!

If one goes onto the PC Tools website there's a little note somewhere that says something along the lines "For usesr who have had a problem with AppleMobile......... etc, then they should upgrade Spyware Doctor to the latest version. Completely uninstall the version you have and install the latest version from this site"

OK I did that and lo and behold my desktop machine is now running V8.0.0.662.

So how come the version on my laptop tells me "Spyware Doctor is Up to Date"?

It looks to me like there's probably been a major blame-game job been going on behind the scenes between Apple and a number of Anti-Virus software suppliers. Given Apple's litigeous nature at the moment I can't blame these Anti-virus companies from keeping their heads down!

I imagine that all concerned have been working flat out to solve the problem - I just wish they could have agreed on a common public announcement to their loyal customers.

If anyone is interested you can have a look at my website http://www.satellitespy.net for some other interesting insights. Twitter @satispy.

Saucecoda -- you nailed the big bicture, I think (as did the person who directed us to the PC Tools site).

I was initially releieved at this thread because the uninstalls of iTunes worked -- till a new version. I knew the issue started around the time I updated itunes AND added Spyware Dr. w/Antivirus. Yesterday I "updated" the antivirus and the problem is gone...

Just checked my numbers -- I'm now on the same version...my other "unupdated PC" is on .....663!

Ha - don't care.

I also suggest that folks look for updates to their virus software. And shame on Apple. I suspect it's a plot to make PC users suffer a bit more.

After updating to new Iunes i came across the same issues (CPU load 100% / not able to connet to store / not able to update to iOs 5). But all solved thanks to this thread, thumbs up guys (and big FAIL for Apple as they're ignoring this all the way as it seems....). Here's the easiest solution without de-installing etc etc http://www.thebambers.me.uk/wordpress/?p=316

I'm no Apple Fanboy, but some of the comments above are over-the-top. Antivirus apps always cause problems w/ other apps -- I can't say that they always will, but they certainly always have.

iTunes is a pretty complex app offering lots of functionality. There are bound to be problems with smaller-market utillity programs like the ones listed above.

Uninstalling iTunes in exactly the order specified by Apple fixed the problem for me (12.5% CPU usage; I never had a blank Store screen). I'm not having any conflicts w/ my antivirus (Webroot) and antimalware programs (Webroot & Comodo).

Thank you very much to all of those who posted solutions! The solutions don't seem to work for everyone, though, so I'm not surprised that Apple doesn't have an official fix yet...

Oct 19, 2011 1:10 PM in response to kpm800

GREAT!!!

AMDS was taking until 98% of CPU, couldn't update to iOS 5.0 in my Iphone 3GS with iTunes 10.5 in Windows XP.

For the records: Uninstalled my two Antivirus: Thread Fire and NOD 32. Execute netsh winsock reset as above, restart the computer.

And everything is woking GREAT!!!

Thanks a lot guys.

Now I need an antivirus that doesn't interfere with iTunes 10.5

I found Covenant Eyes to be the culprit for me as well. Received an email from them today; looks like they've got a fix. I uninstalled CE and iTunes, Apple Application Support, the whole shebang. Installed the newest CE, and am about to reinstall iTunes again.

We have released a new version of our Covenant Eyes for Windows software that fixes a major conflict with iTunes 10.5 and also with Safari.

Use this link (https://secure.cvnt.net/member/download) to get the updated software for Windows computers, and then simply run the installer.

Last week Apple released iTunes 10.5. If you have not yet updated iTunes on your Windows computer, please first update to the new version of Covenant Eyes linked above. If you do not update Covenant Eyes for Windows you will not be able to get to the iTunes store and will not be able to sync iPod/iPad/iPhones.
