Lion Cursor Bug

Does anyone else have the bug in Lion where the cursor will sometimes shoot to a corner of the screen? I'm using a Magic Mouse with my Macbook Pro and from what I've seen it will sometimes happen when the mouse is moving from one window to another one and then it will just go all the way across the screen to the edge in the direction I was moving the cursor.

Mac OS X (10.7)

What do you mean?

I mean, check your settings in System Preferences, both Trackpad and Universal Access. It's the obvious place to start troubleshooting pointer movement. Especially for those using a Mouse / Trackpad combination. Also, things like Hot Corners can confuse things.

I found even a small change in the "Initial delay" setting improved my control of the pointer, as did slowing it's action slightly (In my case). There may be a need to check boxes when using a mouse too.

It is my opinion that there is a problem with the focus not being where the cursor is. Normally a flashing cursor denotes the system is ready for text entry at that point, but in Lion, half the time the focus is elsewhere and you need to move the pointer and click again at the cursor, before entering text. This is evident in the Wake Up Login dialogue, where only occasionaly can you start typing the password straight away.

I do like the Mousepad solution. The simple ones are the best🙂

Tried the Universal Access settings, that little "kill mouse acceleration" app and a ton of other stuff - nothing made any difference. Here, I think it was the culmination of few separate probs that resulted in a big one:

Getting a mousepad helped a bit, the upgrade to 10.7.2 might have helped a bit more, but the big one was switching out the bluetooth mouse mentioned earlier - this instantly fixed mine. Really nice not to have to carry around that annoying USB nib on the laptop anymore. :-)

SUCCESS! Though it may not be the kind you're hoping for, it did the job for me.

As background: For the two months or so Lion has been out, my Magic Trackpad simply ceased to be functional. The cursor—as so many have noted here and on other forums—seems to have a mind of its own, jumping around the screen, selecting text, scrolling pages, inserting characters where none are desired, and so on. This behavior occured on both my iMac (with second display, as others have noted) and on my MacBook Air as well, using the Trackpad only.

My Magic Mouse didn't do this, so I've been using that. As a longtime software developer, I tested every permutation possible: memory conflicts, Bluetooth device conflict, wireless/wired keyboards—really quite a bit. Still that cursed behavior remained.

Then, on the advice of a colleague, I must admit, I bought a new Trackpad. That did the trick. Apparently the original Trackpad simply had some buggy issues. But I've been using this new one now for three full days, all day long, and it is perfection. (And no, I don't work for Apple or anyone who sells Trackpads.)

Those who wish to try this for themselves, please do. And if it works for you, mark this as a Helpful or Correct Answer, so everyone else out there—and we are were legion—can move beyond this and get some work done. Meanwhile I'm returning the previous Trackpad to Apple.

I have seen this for many many months as well, both on my Mighty Mouse wired and wireless.

Much ado on the net about this topic. Lots of comments about the mousepad.

After trying a few different ones, still very skeptical, I can say my mouse hasn't done the "wiz to the corner" trick in over a week, and it would happen normally several times a day.

My "mousepad" that seems to work is a black matte finish (not glossy) iPad holder I got as a promo. But, basically, the idea of a solid color like black without gloss surpisingly does seem to help. Hard to believe the MM is so touchy, but...

I also have one of the newer trackpads connected, but I've lived with this problem before and after that.

I'm thinking it's not a bug, but maybe just this.

HTH.

The shortcut in Photoshop would be the 'Caps Lock' button. 😉

This problem is nearly a year old! What the h3ll.

With some of my brushes, the off-setting problem/error occurs between 300-800 brush size. So I can only work small or work big.

I can't try out the the second monitor solution atm as I'm in transient, but this is ridiculous!
