Lion Finder sidebar color?

Hey!

I've just upgraded to Lion and I'm kinda dissapointed of many reasons, like the grey aweful sidebar icons in the finder app.

Is there any solution to change it back to the normal like it was in Snow Leopard?

The other thing is the Mail app. The new surface looks horrible as well, even if I change it to "classical view".

I want the older back! It was good as it was!

There is no way of adding color unless there is a third party solution out there. Grey is the new color!

Probably as usual... internal debates between developpers and VPs stop when Steve has made a choice...

Steve is probably color blind or just nostalgic and miss the old days of monochrome icons on the sidebar... so we do have freaking ugly monochrome sidebar icons... Which is inconsistent with the Menu where we still have (thank god!) the color icons.

Just give me the option in Preferences to turn it on and off Steve... and let it go!

Thanks,

Phil

The icons in the Finder's "Go" menu have always been in color so the posted article isn't relevant - ie, a red herring.

From all I've seen, there is something somewhere that masks the Sidebar icons. You can attempt to replace them (the greyscale ones) and in the Finder itself - ie where you've browsed to /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/ and attempted a manual replacementor via LiteIcon or Candybar - and see a color icon that still will show (yes after a Finder restart) in the sidebar as greyscale.

Apple’s changing those to grey as soon as they see them!!!

Also any other color they discover will become grey.

In Safari they have black type on a dark grey background so you are unable to read your tabs. That’s not allowed.

Lion will become all dark grey with black type forcing you to swipe like iOS.

Maybe the current generation can’t read?

Thanks ... Ken

Yeah forget about the icons. I changed the gray side bar icon for Applications in the resources to the colorful one in the menu. The icon changed, but it was still gray. So, as suspected, the side bar programmatically drains the colors from any icon it comes across.

That means changing icons gets you nowhere. The only reason they have grey icons to begin with is that these are optimized to look good in gray.

I rummaged through the system defaults via command line, couldn't find any setting that relates to colors in the sidebar. I think there simply is no such preference in OS X Lion. It's gray, or gray. Period.

We need a hack.

Petitions are a nice way to make you feel like you are actively making a change. I gues it wouldn't hurt, but the feedback link that has been mentioned previously is regarded as the best way to let Apple know what you think.

But in the end, this is Apple we're talking about here. They consciously and deliberately removed the colour icons with no way to put the colour back - which would have taken some effort, let alone hig-level decision making.

Question: what would be the chance of them back-flipping on this decision?
Answer: judging by their track record, I'd have to say very slim to none...

Folks, is color alone really enough? If you put folders and apps in your sidebar having identical color icons still defeats the purpose of icons in the sidebar. To me we dont just need color, it needs to go back to the old way of supporting the custom icon of each file/folder added to it. See, in the pic if the folders were simply blue again, I still couldnt tell them apart with out the text lable. Same with apps & docs..1 of those app icons is an app, the other is the apps folder ummm....color does not fix what should be totally different icons that are being overridden by Apple's new icon domination.

Yep that's right... but I do believe (I might be wrong) that once we remove the "automatic change for grey icons" option, we should be able to see the real color icons... which means not only color, but also the original icons shape and design.

I was used to make special icons for my favorite folder I do use very often... with individual and different color icons for each one... to be able to find them quickly and have very fast workflow... Now it's just a mess...
