Lion WiFi Connection Problem

Since installing Lion on both my IMac and MacBook Pro, the WiFi cycles (wifi icon on the menu bar) - looking for network - network on - looking for network. iMac with OS 10.6 doesn't have this problem so it's not the AirPort and there was no problem prior to installing Lion. The AirPort Utility log shows lots of connection activity but I don't know if that means anything. The network troubleshooter says theres no problem but it's causing big problems with connection speed and applications that need a constant connection are giving me network errors constantly. Please give me some advise....

Well it seems I'm getting inconsistent WiFi start-up after sleep now with 10.7.1

I have found I need to count to ten after opening lid and enering password to start system to allow system to come completely out of sleep mode before attempting internet access. It appears to be operating better. I'll monitor and keep y'all up to date.

I have checked,"Auto Proxy Discovery" in advanced as suggested. Can anyone tell me what the **** that means?

When the computer first wakes up it will run any maintenance scripts (cron scripts) that should have run on schedule during the night. It also launches off into sync routines and automatic updates. I don't know if there are time delays on these things but often I see the sync icon running and need to let it finish before attempting anything else. iDisk syncs do the same and are notoriously slow too.

Now I set the sleep mode to "never" and have recently taken to leaving the lid open on my MBP at night too, but maybe this is a bit extreme:)

I don't know about Proxies, but the Passive FTP box, at the bottom of that dialogue box, is checked on mine.

I have not had the wifi or freezing problems some others are experiencing. I have a modern router (BT Hub 3) and keep third party software up to date. (Flash, Java, Perian, Filp4Mac, AppTrap, OnyX, Skype, all have recent Lion updates). I also run the OnyX automation script occassionaly, which repairs permissions and clears various caches (it probably does the same as Disk Utility>Permissions, PRAM and SMC resets).

dhwalt,

You are right to avoid using the Power Button, but not just in this case.

Try using the Apple drop down menu to put Mac to sleep rather than pressing the power button; and, do this as a rule rather than an exception.

Generally, it is a good idea to use the power button only in extreme cases or where Apple requires it for resetting PRAM, etc., or to turn on a Mac that had been Shut Down, or when customary methods used in attempts to Force Quit an application do not work.

When it has been sleeping, try waking it by pressing the space bar or any letter key or possibly the trackpad.

Re: Snow Leopard. I actually did have some intermittent WiFi problems that were exacerbated by Lion. But, since loading 10.7.1 yesterday, all seems well on both of my MBP's as well as all the devices. I'm expecting or at least hoping it will stay that way, and so far so good.

....mi sembra preoccupante che il problema del wi-fi non sia stato risolto ad un mese dal rilascio di Lion....comincio davvero a preoccuparmi....forse dovremmo mandare una mail a Steve per saperne di più?

.... it seems worrying that the problem of wi-fi has not been resolved to a month since the release of Lion .... really start to worry .... maybe we should send an email to Steve to learn more?

SaraSM - Thanks for the reply

Re. "Try using the Apple drop down menu to put Mac to sleep rather than pressing the power button; and, do this as a rule rather than an exception."

In the above instance No WiFi + No warning dialog. A greyed out Wifi icon that requires a choice from the dropdown menu.

Better to let the iMac sleep from idle and WiFi is never lost.

Was having wi-fi drop issue with my late 2009 iMac. Full wi-fi bars all the time, but connection would drop all the time. tried all the suggestions in this thread to no avail.

updated to 10.7.1, deleted preferred networks, then added my home network back on. Was online for 12+ hours and thought 10.7.1 fixed the problem. Now it has just dropped again. Same behavior: full wifi bars, but no connectivity. So frustrating! Never had any issues under Snow Leopard.

Seems that 10.7.1 solves the basic problem but if you have the time I tried what you did and still had the same problem as you have.

So I deleted all network and created a new one and so far so good my 4 Macs are working on the new network even after sleep has been on for a while.

Using the Time Capsule, set the new WiFi network while the Time Capsule is related to your computer. Than restart your Time Capsule using the Airport restart and hopefully you will have the same result as I have to date i.e half a day of being able to work normaly.

It could also be wise to restart your computer after having tested that the connection is good.

Good luck and let's hope that the next upgrade will bring back the speed that was so contant with Snow Leopard.

What The $$@#?

Installed 10.7.1, did NOT solve the wifi reconnection problems, caused my Safari to crash THREE TIMES TODAY so far - in such a way that I have to power cycle my Macbook.

APPLE PLS DO SOMETHING!!!!!

Sending in reports, weeks into this new OS, installed the first (bug fix) upgrade 10.7.1, NADA, NOTHING.

I am becoming more and more p'd off every time Safari crashes at me randomly.

I thought my problem was fixed because I had WiFi from early last night, after 10.7.1 was released, until a short while ago. But, when I tried to open Safari about ten minutes ago, I could not load the home page. And, the beachball kept on spinning. I tried three of four times with the same result. Each time I had to force quit. Finally I shut down and restarted my MBP and Safari works again.

I had reset Safari, deleted all cookies and emptied the cache a few days ago, with no luck. But I will get the new version of Flash and try again.

i'm still having hte same issue after updating to 10.7.1. My issues is that if put my computer to sleep when I'm backing up to my 1st gen timcapsule, my wifi won't work when i wake my computer until the backup times out due to lack of wifi. once the backup quits (about 1-2 minutes), then the internet connects and i have t ostart my timecapusle backup all over again. rather annoying. what's the point of a laptop if i can't put it to sleep and move it around without losing wifi and my currect backup?

English:

The 10.7.1 arrived and the problem continues.

I think Apple will not solve this problem soon.

I stopped trying to get alternatives.

I think the correction has to work without human intervention.

Delete connection, reset something, etc. should not be necessary.

My connection does not drop only if the ping is running.

I'll wait for 10.7.2. If it does not work I will return to SL. Of course I will ask for a refund.

Português:

O 10.7.1 chegou e o problema continua.

hey there,

since i see that many of you are restarting your machines to get wifi to connect again, there's a less obtrusive way: click the airport icon in the menu bar. turn airport off and on again. if it doesn't reconnect right away you can connect by selecting your network from the list.

still really annoying but at least it works and you don't have to sit there and wait for your machine to restart or watch it scramble to connect by itself - eventually...

cheers!
