LOOK! I installed Lion but the firewire is NOT recognized on my Mac Pro!

I installed LION on my Mac Pro, 2009, 2x 2.26 8 core and BOOM! I could no longer use my studio which is run by a Tascam FW1884 DAW control. When I hooked it up to my macbook ALSO running 10.7, it worked fine! UGH! Then I called tech support and they said I have to go to Genius Bar, I aint got the time to drag my studio down there so I went back to Snow Leopard. Anyone else have this issue?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), Primarily for Logic 9/Recording Studio

I do not doubt what you say. However, I am surprised that Apple Support are saying that there's a hardware issue on Macbook Pro / firewire / Lion. If that was the case, then I would have hoped that the Lion installation would detect its target hardware and, at the very least, warn you that your firewire is about to break.

I have found this out to my cost. Nothwithstanding the price of Lion, it's cost me at least a day trying to figure out if my Western Digital drive had coincidentally broken (it hasn't because it's fine on USB).

Do I get a warranty with Lion? If I do, I'd like my money back.

I have a FW-1884, and I figured out how to get it to work in Lion.

The FW-1884 drivers do not work with Lion's 64-bit kernel. You have to boot Lion with the 32-bit kernel. Hold down the 3 and 2 keys while you boot, and the Tascam will become available.

The next time you reboot the machine it will automatically revert to the default 64-bit kernel.

Thanks for the info. Works for me!

Thanks TWF at least other end users will now see an answer to possibly having to lose all of their files if they do not back up thier files. I simply went back to SL until either Tascam gets it right or Apple.

Here is MY confusing issue....why would the 1884 be recognizable on Lion on my Macbook(not a pro) but NOT on my Mac Pro desktop in LION? This is why I figured it was a hardware/firmware with the Pro desktops. I donno but it gives me hope that peeps like you and Hatter are around to help.

Cheers...

Which Macbook are you using? That one has me perplexed. As for Tascam doing anything about this, I would not hold my breath if I were you. The FW-1884 has been discontinued since at least December (ahead of its time, it's also six years old now). That machine was designed by Frontier Design anyway, and I think Tascam never wrote their own drivers for it.

My Macbook is older 2008 model 2.4ghz Core Duo w/4gig 667 RAM. I only use Logic on it to record Live or away from my studio, etc. I also am using Tascam's latest driver 1.7, but that is an old driver that they made specifically for the bugs that came with Intel Macs running 10.6. Maybe my Macbook is by default booting in 32-bit? I know that Lion in a Mac Pro auto goes into 64, I never thought that would have all to do with the firewire recognition on the 1884.

I am going to sit on the side lines and wait to see when the updates are performed to get a Tascam working.

>>>>>>>I would want to know if anyone running a Tascam DM3200/4800 is having issues?<<<<<<<<<<

These models are up to date and still selling. I know that the FW lines are old and way ahead of thier time. I will be switching when I can modify my studio to accompany the larger set-ups i.e DM series.

ok so according to some this issue is exclusive to mac pros. This is not true. I have the same issue on a quad i5 iMac mid 2010 with 12g of memory. Rebooting to 32 bit does solve the issue but rebooting again will not put you back into 64 bit unless you hold down 6 and 4 while rebooting. The problem remanifests which means it only works in 32 bit kernal. The only real resolution is for tascam to update the workstation drivers. I see it unlikely Which means I may have to retire the 1082. Its a shame. I love this thing.

now I am also having issues with AC-7 (and ac-7 xt) not being fully functional. I assume they will probably update it a lot sooner than tascam will. I don't even want to try the BCR-2000. It will make me cry. I wish these DAW designers and companies would be more on top of this stuff. It is soley their fault. Lion has been in dev for more than enough time. There really is no excuse.
