after lion 10.7 no audio sound

I have a mid 2009 MBP, it worked great on 10.6.8, but after installed 10.7, the audio icon gray out, and showing "The selected device has no output control".

It does has sound when boot up, and sound effect is no problem, only the output does not work.

I have to connect my earphone into the jack, and the error message of "The selected device has no output control", disappreared. After that unplug the earphone, everything works. However, once I reboot, the problem remains.

I brought it for service, and they claimed it was a software issue and they could not do anything. They suggested me to reinstall the Lion again.

When I rolled up to 10.6.8 everything worked, but once upgraded to 10.7, the problem was back.

I have reinstalled three times, however, the problem remains.

Any suggestion ?

By the way, clean install does not work neither.

Just an update ...

To be correct, I can play the music with sound, is the volume adjustment and mute do not work

I have the same issue on MBP2009. With Snow Leopard volume controls worked fine, after LION install the controls are greyed out and I get this message "The selected device has no output control" in the Internal Speakers Output settings.

Hello all, I too have re-installed lion 3 times. no sound at all, no output device and audio midi setup just crashes. Contacted applecare, they are playing dumb, never heard of this before. for the record, I have an early 2009 imac

I had no issues with snow lepard

Same problem here. resetting pram doesn't help. and no devices are found in the midi settings. hope apple fixes this fast if enough people complain.

I had this problem today and was able to fix it. I updated to Lion release day so it hasn't been an issue from day one. It started when I restarted my computer today. I was able to hear sound, but I couldn't control it and my Macbook Pro was giving me this:

I restarted it twice and nothing. I finally decided that I just didn't want to be able to hear sound (because I'm at work) so I plugged in head phones and then I played a song in iTunes just to make sure the music was coming through the headphones. Then whilet he music was still playing I pulled the headphones out and the volume icon at the top right became clickable again. That's all I did and now all my keyboard controls and everything work.

I hope this works for everyone.

I have a 2011 13" Macbook Pro and I'm having the same issue. I did a clean install and it worked for a little while. I did the iTunes update and it appears about that time the volume icon grayed out.

I have taken a look on this issue, and this is what I think :-

1. It is not a hardware issue otherwise rolling back to 10.6.8. Will no work.

2. I saw a little metal “click” on the top of the entrance hole of audio in/out jack, a short term solution is either to insert an earphone or an optical cable and uplug it afterward, which would drive to run the audio driver.

3. Hence, I believe there is a problem only with certain model of MBP, after upgrading to Lion the software fails to “click on” the audio driver of the volume control.

Before, Apple to release the new update to fix this issue, I always insert an Tousling to mini optical adapter (without cable), which helps.

Hey SONGZZZ, could you please elaborate. I am running parallels on a 27 imac(2011), and have this issue... I'm more likely to lose lion, than parallels, if it come to that. Thanks for any info you can offer!
