Lion and Keynote Problems

I live in iWorks and have a VERY large Keynote presentation with lots of movies (1.1Gb) that I work off of. It worked great in SL, but after upgrading to Lion, I continually get the rotating ball of death loading Keynote, random times working in Keynote, and saving the presentation. It will eventually, after minutes, clear the ball but this is ridiculous. Any ideas?

maverick_nz,

You are correct. People can get pretty pi$$ed off with this stuff. But, I can understand. I'm a tech person and have trained folks in Mac software since the days of the Mac SE. I found a work around to my delima but I always create .pdf versions of my presentations for handouts to participants. Had I not done that I'd have been up the proverbial creek, especially since the Keynote file was corrupt and my Time Machine was in another place.

Your point about jumping on new major OS releases is valid. I tested every critical application, except iWorks apps, who'd have thought? I had one application that had to run under Rosetta so I created a 6.5 boot partition on my device for that. Still, that wouldn't have solved my corrupt file issue.

Frankly I'm surprised that this got through Apple's testing and beta testing. Many folks that I work with could be high and dry until a fix is available.

This problem has nothing to do with file size. It appears to be related to what is on the clipboard and switching windows either within Keynote (to another presentation) or switching to another app.

The best way I've been able to reduce (not eliminate) this problem is by copying some small piece of text to the clipboard before going into Keynote.

Make the save function your friend and be sure to innundate Apple with crash reports - this issue is ridiculous.

Guys I guess I figured out what is causing these problems, as I mentioned above I've just bought a brand new macbook air, what I did was:

Lion is pre-installed so I installed iworks and then I updated it...

I didn't install any components like Flip4MAc or Perian...

When I opened one of my presentation (3 gb with lots of HD pics and HD movies) the behavior was the same, in other words "BEACH BALL"... after that I started to remove ALL movies, then duplicated using a different name. I closed the original version... started to work on the new file WITHOUT the movies... suddenly everything is working just fine... of course i cannot present without my movies.. but i guess i detected the problem...

I will keep you all posted !! 😉

I think that's really interesting, and while I have no problems in this regard, I do know that Lion has problems with certain video formats. Here is what I use for all my presos with no problem whatsoever on all sorts of hardware:

User uploaded file

I also use QT pro exclusivly, in conjunction with Compressor / FCS3 / FCPX / etc. and do not have flip4mac or perion installed on any systems. So, perhaps it is a video format problem causing Keynote to choke. Best of luck!

I am confident that this is the issue (movies) ,, i cannot identify what extension is causing all this mess.. but still without any movie keynote works just fine...

What I wouldn’t like to do is… recode all my movies that are embed in my keynote slides… that is why in my main MacBook I am still keeping Lion with keynote without the latest update.

I am looking forward to hearing from more people!!!

Hi Everyone

I agree that Apple software should work on Apple OS 100%.

I did not even know I had a problem with this untill I read your post

as everything else is working 100%. All Adobe and MS.

My problem comes a little different.

If I play a small presentation I made in 2006...It works 100%

All transistions and sound good.

Just before I installed Lion I updated the Presentation with the v 5.0

Within about 5 seconds using preview slide show the presentation quits.

Keynote stays up .

Looking into the problem or differences now.

Here is some of the files to remove if changing down. I not sure if it is complete:

You may not have fully removed the iWork demo before you installed the new version. iWork installs multiple resources in a variety of places beyond just the user's preferences folder. Try removing the following items from your system and then running the installation again:

/Macintosh HD/Applications/iWork '09 (folder)/Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts/iWork09* (any file in this folder that refers to iWork)/Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWork09.plist/Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWork09.Installer.plist/Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/iWork '09 (folder)/Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/iWork (folder--if present)

/username/Library/Application Support/iWork (folder)/username/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.iWork.Pages.NUMBER.plist/username/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.iWork.Keynote.NUMBER.plist/username/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.iWork.Numbers.NUMBER.plist/username/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.iWork.NUMBER.plist/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWork.Keynote.plist/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWork.plist

In addition to these files, iWork stores frequently used items in user caches, which are located in the following location and can be safely removed:

/username/Library/Caches/

After removing all of these files, restart the system and try installing the boxed version of iWork again.

Cheers Tomi

In my case, my keynote file does not contain any movies, but it shows "spinning beach ball" whenever I modify it. I have just come back from an international meeting where I presented with Keynote. Good thing was that after saving the file (save versio), it did not show "beach ball" unless you modify it. So, my presentation was flawless. Thus only problem is appearance of spinning beach ball while I modify/create presentation. I just hope that Apple will address this issue ASAP. Meanwhile I will try to re-install iWork.
