Is it me, or are there major issues with iTunes update 10.4.0.80?

Is it me, or are there major issues with iTunes update 10.4.0.80? I cannot get it to connect to the iTunes store, nor will it back-up my iPhone. I also cannot paste album art. I see a lot of posts referring to the same issues, but no official replies from Apple. It's as if they are acting as if there is nothing wrong.

Windows 7 64 bit

iPhone 4

iPad 2

(both running 4.3.4)

I was having the syncing issue as well. It seemed to start with "Optimizing photos", but quickly drifted to all areas including music, videos, and photos (including video from my phone).

1. I deleted and empty the recycling bin of a folder called iPhone cached photo folder (not sure of the exact name) from "My Pictures" folder.

2. I restarted my computer.

3. I moved my cable to a USB port in the back of my computer.

4. I power cycled (full power shut down for at least 8 seconds) my iPhone and iPad.

5. I started iTunes

6. I reconnected my iPad 2 and got it to do a full sync.

I have not tried the phone yet but this was a simple fix that worked for me. Unfortunately it seems like this issue or these issues are involved and each case has a slightly different solutions. The above steps were recommended to me by an individual at Apple's Tech support for iPad. Good luck and hope you get your digital woes sorted soon.

Sorry for the above post. This did resolve my issues when syncing music, movies, and photos. However, the problem returns when "optimizing" videos in the photo portion of the sync. Removing all videos taken on iPhone 4 and iPad 2 from the synced folders allowed me to sync without crashing. I currently cannot sync multiple videos without crashing iTunes 10.4.

This is what I did and it worked. Considering you have the installation of iTunes 10.3.1.55 to reinstall.

1. Rename your iTunes music folder by adding arbitrary letters to the filename.

2. Uninstall all Apple software that has the same installation date as iTunes 10.4

3. Reboot

4. Install iTunes 10.3.1.55

5. Open iTunes then close it, so that it will establish a new music folder.

6. Rename the newly created folder iTunes to iTunesbak

7. Find your pevious iTunes folder that you renamed and rename it back to iTunes.

8. Open that folder and rename "iTunes Library.itl" to "iTunes Library.itl.bak"

9. Open the folder "Previous iTunes Libraries" find the iTunes library.itl file that was the one with your previous installation and copy/paste it to the directory where your "iTunes Library.itl.bak" file, wich will be the first directory of your iTunes music folder. Simply remove the date in the file name so that it reads "iTunes library.itl"

10. Open iTunes go to edit-preferences and turn off automatic updating.

Now the iTunes store works correctly, iPod and iPhone are syncing, and the music store recognizes my past purchases.

OKAY HERE IS THE FIX.

SPOKE TO AN APPLE TECH TODAY THAT HELPED ME OUT. THIS IS A PAIN IN THE BUTT, BUT IT WORKS...

SPECS

Windows 7 64 bit

iPad 2

iPhone 4

FIX

Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:

  1. iTunes
  2. QuickTime
  3. Apple Software Update
  4. Apple Mobile Device Support
  5. Bonjour
  6. Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)

7) Make sure everything that is by Apple is removed including Safari. You can sort by "Publiser", when you uninstall programs this. Make sure you have at least one other web browser (like Firefox or Internet Explorer) before removing Safari. That way you can go back to the Apple web site and redownload iTunes later.

8) (extra step on my part and may not be necessary) Close the control panel once everything by Apple has been removed. Now run CC Cleaner (its free just Google it) and select the top left two Ikons "Cleaner" and "Registy". Run them over and over until both come up clean. This is an extra strep to make sure your computer will have a clean install and there is no left over cache.

9) Reboot your computer once you are done. Go to Apple's web site and redownload the latest iTunes. Install it and when it's done DO NOT OPEN IT. Reboot your computer one more time to make sure everything is set right.

10) Once your computer is back up. It's safe to run it.

It took me about an hour to do everything back to where everything is good and working. BTW, I noticed my iPad II automatically synced with my iTunes without any wires. Guess it was through my Wifi? At any rate you may want to go to

1) Edit

2) Preferences

3) Click on the "Store" tab

4) Check Aps, Music and Books

That's it. Good luck and enjoy.

Not necessarily a fix since the options for backing up to disc are gone in 10.4.

10.3.1.55 was stable for me and I could backup to disc also.

I already had a system impemented to backup to disc in operation and I have purchased a ton of blank discs for this purpose and still have a lot of them. I do not depend completly on hard drives since those may be lost for various reasons simultaneously. I will not update iTunes again. When iTunes becomes unusable due to my reluctance update then I will cosnider a different music store/manager at that time.

Hi,

im a user from Singapore and after updated my iphone4 software to 4.3.4 and Itunes to 10.4.0.80 last week, I couldn't sync by phone pass step 1 of 4 sometimes. If i manage to sync, it will issue me the error " cant back up to computer". I can't see my itunes store as well. It will appear blank. Sometimes the whole itunes will hang/freeze. Please help. I reinstall the itunes again, choosing the version for my laptop and it's still the same.

It all began on July 22, when I came home with my newly bought iPad 2. Anticipating pleasant experiences with my new device, I switched on my computer (WinXP SP3) and tried to open iTunes to activate the iPad. iTunes asked me if I wanted to upgrade to the newer version (ill-fated 10.4 it was, so much discussed above). I clicked "Yes" - and everything got frozen. I tried to open other browsers, programs - but in vain.

I had to reboot the computer, but before the session ended, an error message saying something like "Cannot close DDE Server Window... Would you like to close it now?" appeared. That message misleaded me, and during the next 5 days I have been trying to fix the mysterious "DDE Server Window" issue.

Nothing worked, and up till now I have not been able either to launch iTunes or - quite naturally - to authorize my iPad. As everything else worked OK, I turned my attention from "DDE" issue back to iTunes itself. Luckily I found this forum thread, from which I learned that a major issue exists with the recent Apple updates.

However, my problem rests where it is, and I am completely confused now, as I HAVE NOT actually updated my iTunes (it still asks me if I want to update to 10.4 which I decline with awe - but only to see my computer get frozen again and again). So what can I do? I cannot either update or use the older version of iTunes. Consequently, I cannot use my iPad, having thrown out the money.

I naively thought that when such a major issue occurs with software support for such a renowned brand as Apple, they would cry outloud on their main page: "Hey, there is such and such problem. We are sorry. Please do this and that!" But it seems that Apple thinks they can feed people with ridiculous recommendations to uninstall and install software dozens of times instead of finding solutions themselves.

Please, is there anyone who HAS NOT upgraded the iTunes and is still having problems with it who could advise anything at all? 😟

Perhaps it's Microsoft Windows Defender that is doing this?

1) Did anyone else receive a message from Microsoft Defender (comes with windows 7) saying that it did not recognize some of the Apple software?

2) I have an Ipod Nano, Shuffle, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPad 2. Each time I have ever hooked it up to my Dell Inspirion (I have had 2 over the last 10 years) for the first time I always get a bogus message that something is wrong. I have to unplug the USB and replug it and it works. It's does this every time just initally. Figured it was Microsoft being ****** since we purchased an Apple product?

For the record I keep my Dell running like it's brand new. Oh and with Dell laptop computers I only have trouble with them on the first day. After that they run like champs. However, I am sick of Microsoft little childish games to get me to stay with them. I don't know why they do this because I don't experience it with Apple. This maybe my last Microsoft PC computer, but then again I guess it depends on budget and what I can move over to Apple.

To "from Moscow"

Try downloading "CC Cleaner" from Google. It's free, but they will ask you for a donation. You do not have to donate in order to use the product. At any rate run the top left two Ikons "Cleaner" and "Registry" over and over until they come clean. Once you begin this it shoud take between 5 to 10 minutes to do it. Then go to START, then RUN and type "shutdown -r -t 05". That will flush your casche and reboot your computer. Once your computer is up try it like it's day one with the iPadI again.

If it still does not work, then try the 4th post above you. It should work on XP sp3. Good luck!

Jul 26, 2011 11:20 AM in response to JamesD1957

JamesD1957: Apparently, people do not seem to see the writing on the wall. The reason that both Apple & Microsoft have developed the iCloud (in respective versions) is because web-based computing is their vision of the future - for a reason . . . Motivated by profits, the ultimate goal is centralized control. The computer industry is hemorrhaging losses due to counterfeiting/piracy of software - especially in the overseas markets. You can purchase a useable copy of the latest OS from flea markets for less than $15 USD in most developing nations while the same costs $400-$600 USD here. They are trying to remove the ability to counterfeit or pirate software for profit. SO, web-based computing will eventually do away with personal computing - do you remember how the old "mainframe" computers worked? A central computer held all the info & programs while individual terminals had no computing power - terminals were simply keyboards & screens that were hard-wired to the central computer. Terminals had to access the mainframe in order to operate. Welcome to the future of web-based computing. No more individual OS's., no more hard drives, no more discs. You will have a computer at home that has only one function - access the internet. Once you link into the "Cloud", only then can you operate or access anything. No more MS Office discs being purchased & passed around among a group of friends. You will have to access MS Office Live site to use any MS Office product. You will no longer have a tangible product to purchase & own - you will have to purchase an ongoing subscription & pay monthly fees to the IT giants in order to continue using computers in the future. If you fail to pay, you cannot access any information because even if you find a way to save digital information from your terminal, you cannot "run" any info without the software. Scary, huh?

Is it me, or are there major issues with iTunes update 10.4.0.80?
