Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

DO NOT UPGRADE TO LION!

Lion may well turn into to Apple's Vista. I've used Apple products since 1981, and I've never experienced anything like this. The so-called upgrade has so far:

1. Broken Mail and all it's contents. No obvious solution that doesn't result in losing all folders.

2. Time Capsule, by virtue of a complete new backup of the HD, eliminates most history as there typically isn't sufficient memory for the doubling up. NO WARNINGS. Just gone.

3. Applications that don't play nice with Lion (PPC apps, Adobe apps, Microsoft apps) are just eliminated when a TC restore is done following the upgrade.

4. Apparently going back to Snow Leopard is problematic, if even possible.

I hate that I didn't wait. What an idiot.

My reason for posting the "Do Not Install" entry was that had I seen that before I upgraded, I might have held back for a while to let things settle out. As it happens, I've now spent 24 hours trying to resolve issues that Apple should have resolved in the Beta trials. So my intentions were to be helpful, not "childish."

I was able to resolve the Mail corruption by removing the Smartmailboxes.plist from ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData. Would seem that Apple might do a better job trapping for things like this.

Unfortunately you are right.

It's not chidlish, it's helpul.

I'm facing a lot of issues and I have noticed big bugs (such as deleting files still appearing in a open/save window!) or weird behaviours after swithcing from one desktop to another.

I've installed Lion on a FRESH Snow Leopard and my computer is slower than my old mac mac book pro!!!

I agree: DO NOT UPGRADE TO LION until Apple fixes everything.

Sorry that you are having 'problems'.

The past few weeks have shown that most user 'problems' are not because of Lion, but user not understanding interface channges, and where to look to reset the new defaults.

Merely complaining because things are different does not mean they are broken. I have upgraded over 35 machines with no failures or problems. It is vital that users spend time familiarizing themselves with new System Preference and user interface options.

As for your specious 'DO NOT UPGRADE' missive: those who do not progress are left behind.

Don't get me wrong.

I'm always looking forward new versions and lov new experiences. I do love the new user interface, except iCal and Address Book leather skin.

When I say I have problems (and I'm NOT the only one, regarding the forums, and the Vista comparaison I've found on several posts...!!!), I do have problems.

From a fresh installation of Snow Leopard (meaning, from scratch, formatting the disk, install and not using a Time Machine backup), my Lion runs SLOW, and my MBP is only one year old!

I've noticed bugs like deleted files still appearing in another window, very high CPU usage and memory usage.

Plus, I have to uncheck (because it's not a system preference) the "reopen windows when logging back" when I need a clean startup.

I'm using os X since Panther, and I never had such problems with upgrading to new versions. I NEVER had to make a fresh clean install to make my system works.

I've upgraded from Panther to Snow Leopard on my old macbookpro with no reinstallation! Can you believe that? On my first MBP, I NEVER HAD to reinstall!

So why on a new computer I had to do it, and even so it's f* slow???

And I don't want to donwgrade, because I too say and truly believe: those who do not progress are left behind.

I generally download even beta versions and participate to beta tests, FYI.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply.

I had zero issues with the upgrade. Suspect it was because I use a strict pre-upgrade hygeine:

  • Boot from a current OS install disk use Disk Utility to repair disk
  • Then reboot machine and use Disk Utility to repair disk permissions

My three year old machine is really much more speedy under Lion. I upped memory to 8GB matched from OWC for next to nothing. Memory helps under 64-bit.

Suspect you are having other non-Lion issues. Please take a close look at 'My Processes' when you launch Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. See anything running you don't recognize? Favored CPU and network hogs are Carbonite and Southwest Airlines Ding!. The eat up unreal amounts of power and lag everything on an even fast machine.

I agree on the 'reopen windows' annoyance. iCal also has some new default behaviors that waste time and keystrokes. Please share yours with Apple at www.apple.com/feedback They really do read, even if they do not respond.

If I can help you in any way -- please reach out. By engaging Lion with curiosity and patience -- you will be amazed how productive you can become.

Agree with WH. Apple's mistake was launching an upgrade to the unwashed masses who (1) expect that "it just works" if it comes from Apple (justifiably so), and (2) don't observe the pristine hygiene or have the expertise to handle Lion's quirks like the holier-than-thou types on this thread. I'm a pretty sophisticated user and the upgrade to my 6 month old iMac has been a disaster. No retail, non-beta upgrade should do this to a significant minority of its users. Apple, you have effed it up, lost some goodwill and dinged your reputation.

If you aren't a savvy O/S adventurer, wait until the 10.7.2 release -- or until the howls of agony on the forums have died down.

I've rolled back to Snow Leopard and have restored my happiness.

I agree. I moved from a PC to a MacBook Pro 8 months ago. LOVED IT! So much faster than a PC I couldn't figure out why it took me so long to switch...then I upgraded to Lion...thought I was back on a PC.

Let me stress, I have NEVER had issuse with my MacBook Pro until I upgraded! Safari hangs up, had apps crash, mouse becomes unreponsive, touch pad has a mind of its own...

This is NOT a problem limited to you!

I am so disappointed in Apple!

Oh, and one more comment for those doubting Thomases, I AM a computer expert, guru, programmer!

I think these Support Communities have shown without any doubt that there are many, many users having a very wide range of problems indeed with Lion. I did so myself for almost a fortnight. I had good help from Apple Support people, who were very discreet, but who seemed to know exactly where to go to solve several specific issues. By no means intuitive solutions, either. Made me believe strongly that they know far more about its shortcomings than they are permitted to let on.

Two afterthoughts from me, now that, as far as I can tell, my iMac works properly again:

1) I wasn't surprised to see a Lion upgrade issued quickly, but I was surprised to see it contained solutions to issues I had never seen raised in these Communities. Makes me think that it contained patches for things Apple knew they had left out at the launch of Lion.

2) (and this one is ironic) I downloaded the latest version of Flash Player compatible with Lion and it ran with no problems. However, earlier this week, I got an Adobe notification of an upgrade. I upgraded, and boy, did I see a speed increase with my iMac! Pity it seems that Adobe and Apple are fighting a war using our desktops and laptops as the battleground.

No need to follow 'pristine hygeine' -- just follow the installer instructions that come with the upgrade. Those screens that most users just click through because they are 'sophisticated users'. Even as a server admin, I read all the read-me's... why? Because they same me time and trouble later.

By no means are the users with problem installations a 'majority'. Overstating your cause for drama or impact won't inspire others to offer the meaningful help you need. Venting will not fix your perceived Lion issues.

I have offered several times here to help users with specific identifiable, repeatable issues who wish assistance.

Whining and complaining or trolling aren't useful if you truly seek help and resolution.

Aug 20, 2011 1:46 PM in response to Michael Sidoric

Now Michael, name-calling will get you nowhere. I've just stated support for brother WH and noted my own issues. Nothing wrong with a little differing opinion, neither whining nor complaining nor trolling. Shame you don't read the comments as carefully as you do the read-me files. I think I said significant minority -- oh yes, I did. And thanks for your offer to help, but the problems are too many to make it worthwhile. If I can roll back to a perfectly fine OS and won't miss the fabulous new "features" (or is it "bugs", I can't tell) faster than I fix all the problems, why wouldn't I do that? I stand by my original post.

Yet have you even tried a clean install (wipe your drive while installing from a flash drive) before telling us what a Pro you are? Install your OS clean before whining about all the problems you brought forward from your perfectly working SL install. If doing a clean wipe of your drive is beyond your ability, then you certainly are no Pro, just another whiner with problems because they upgraded instead of taking the extra effort of clean installing their OS. A Pro knows better than to upgrade an OS.
