DO NOT UPGRADE TO LION!

Lion may well turn into to Apple's Vista. I've used Apple products since 1981, and I've never experienced anything like this. The so-called upgrade has so far:

1. Broken Mail and all it's contents. No obvious solution that doesn't result in losing all folders.

2. Time Capsule, by virtue of a complete new backup of the HD, eliminates most history as there typically isn't sufficient memory for the doubling up. NO WARNINGS. Just gone.

3. Applications that don't play nice with Lion (PPC apps, Adobe apps, Microsoft apps) are just eliminated when a TC restore is done following the upgrade.

4. Apparently going back to Snow Leopard is problematic, if even possible.

I hate that I didn't wait. What an idiot.

Thanks Tom. I had a long reply to an earlier post of yours but it somehow got deleted.

Briefly: I think the only responsibility a consumer has is to research any product and make sure it is compatible first with Macs and second with Lion.

As a Veterinarian with a Master's basically in experimental design, I rely on history and former results to formulate current protocols. I look at my Macs the same way. Virtually every operating system has seamlessly worked with every Apple and Apple recommended product. With a history like this, I saw no reason to question the ability of the latest OS to work the same way. Lion does not. Hardware that supposedly is compatible with Lion does not work even when I go to the manufacturer's website and download correct drivers. 5 printers and 3 scanners did not work. The 4th scanner has worked well and hopefully one of the Epson's you and Barney recomend will work.

You are correct that most problems with 10.7.2 have been transfer ones but I do not believe the fault lies with the consumer. If I research a printer and it is supposed to be compatible with Lion, I expect it to work. What's frustrating with this OS is certain products, like a printer, will work perfectly for some users of Lion but not for others. Same OS, same Mac, different results. Maybe this happened with Snow Leopard but I never went to these boards because I never had a problem with Snow Leopard.

When the next OS comes out I'll go back to my Windows protocol: minimum of 6 months before I decide to upgrade.

By the way, I appreciate the efforts of you, Barney and others that take the time to help those of us that come here in need.

thanks

Keith- My Prespective

It apeared that print functionality was not the major issue with third party printers, but scan functionality. Basic Scan functionality was suported in Print/Fax in System Preferences but was an unsatisfactory alternative to Tools provided by Printer manufacturers. Also, VueScan, a third party Scan software was helpful in some cases. Eventually, printer manufacturers will get up to speed. Apple has no control over third party support. Epson, in my case, provided a solution. In the meantime, create a partion on that big drive and clone your working volume to it.

OS X Kitty Kat may be next if trends continue.

Being that you're looking for a business printer, the Workforce series may be a better choice. It's likely the same software/firmware as the NX series, but a little more robust mechanically (I'd hope).

Printer's are a difficult animal. The Mac has been using postrcript to raster print and display for a decade. Every printer manufacturer has to use their own raster mechanism, so the software (driver) has to convert what the Mac sends out into what the printer needs. Printer's are now a throw-away commodity, at least that's the impression I get from the manufacturers.

While expensive at the outset, a printer with a Postscript driver will likely keep working without fail, regardless of OS updates because it really doesn't need a driver to do the conversion.

I just replaced an HP Color Laserjet 2550 with that Epson. It worked since 2004 without any hiccups due to OS updates. It was starting to show its age; kind of slow, and loud too.

I was amazed at the number of people who had still been using Apple Laserwriter's through AppleTalk when Lion came out (AppleTalk was dropped with Lion, so we heard all about it here). We're talking 15 year-old printers.

HORRIBLE ~ I've been a Mac user since 1987 and I AGREE Lion ***** big time and is getting closer to feel like windows. Feels like "I'm full of junkie hidden files and don't even try to look or understand how they work nor why things don't work and quit ... just wait for the next update!!!""

I upgraded 2 days ago and I regret it so much. What a waste of time! Back to Snow.

Unhappy is an understatement ~ I don't mind troubleshooting and I always make sure I wait before jumping in any firmare or os upgrade (I learned my lesson a long time ago) but Lion is sooooooo.... not ready! and it's been what? a while since it came out? I'd rather pay $100 for a solid OS.

If in the market, better off buying a Mac pre-Lion (for cheaper mind you) and wait.

It seems like you have a problem with me venting and agreeing with the OP? You're happy with Lion? Fine -- It's probably reading raving posts like yours that I jumped into Lion (lol)

Anyway....If you have spare time (obviously) can you help me with this issue I have ---- > https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3686499?answerId=17408301022#17408301022
