Bring back old working Spaces and Expose

Mission Control is a complete misfire and several steps backwards in design and usability. They took something that was beautifully simple and nearly flawless and turned it into a chaotic mess for no reason.

I was a heavy user of Spaces and Expose and it was easily my favorite OS X feature hands down. Now it's been three days of Lion and I just avoid Mission Control at all costs and find myself switching apps instead, something I would expect from Microsoft, not Apple.

Trying to understand how to use MC without going insane I started simply swithing apps instead of thinking about spaces, and at least that made some sense, but there was still a lot of unnecessary changing of spaces back and forth for no reason. It dawned on me to try something: I killed all Spaces and have a single desktop with every window. You know, like Windows would do. As a testament of what a terrible idea MC is, it works a lot better this way. When you do Expose you can at least understand what you're looking at, and you don't care that the tiny Space thumbnail is being covered up by your windows. There's also no unnecessary shuffling between spaces. It's an obviously cluttered, primitive, step back in sophistication and usability that almost makes me wish I had Vista's Flip 3D, but at least I am not spending half of my time jumping between spaces and hunting down lost windows.

Here's some of the issues with Mission Control:

- It's visually confusing and messy. The application windows usually cover the Spaces thumbnails along the top. What is the point of showing me the Spaces if they're covered up with windows? Isn't that defeating the very point of Mission Control? Why do I need to see my desktop background inset within *another* background in MC? Why are the Windows stacked so tightly and messily? It's impossible to pick the window you want unless you do "App Expose". What is the point of having Spaces previews if they're so tiny you can barely see what it's in them anyway? They used to be nice, clean, large previews. Now it's a stupid mess of tiny thumbnails with drop shadows, text labels, multiple backgrounds, being covered by app windows... ugh.

- The fact that they are now a linear row of spaces along the top is clearly much less user friendly than the old grid method, which was spatially and visualy easy to use and memorize. Now I have to think about numbers for desktops instead of "up" or "down". You know how much easier it is to type numbers on a keypad versus pecking the linear numbers along the top of your keyboard? Same thing. Also, you could go into the old Spaces and accurately hit the Space you want to go to because they were huge, easy to read and remember targets. Now they're tiny, hard to remember and usually hidden under something else.

- It took the advantages of both Spaces and Expose and eliminated them in order to merge them, who knows why. You used to be able to go into Spaces, and then Expose while there to reveal every window, and find *any* open window in seconds. Now it's impossible. You have to shuffle haplessly through spaces and hit expose and hope the window you're looking for shows up, and if that fails, which happens often, then you have to switch to every application and hit app expose. What a mess.

Easy solution: Just bring back the old Spaces and Expose, maybe as an option to MC. Or at least give us the option fo a grid layout and old style Expose. Please. Please. Please.

This is one example of what I mean, and the poor experience Mission Control gives me on a daily basis. Look at this screenshot. Two applications: Safari with a few windows open, and NetNewsWire. Four spaces (I had to downgrade from 9 flawless working spaces on SL to 4 crappy ones with MC).

- The four spaces are covered with overlapping application previews. Good luck hitting that tiny sliver of an icon to switch, and forget about seeing what's in them before you clik.

- The Application previews are also occluding each other.

- The windows within each application are all hidden behind each other, and barely hittable with a mouse (look at the tiny slivers of clickable area for each one of the stacked windows for Safari)

- Again, why am I seeing my desktop wallpaper and this other background one within the other? How does this help?

- Why is my dock here?

And this is just one example. I'm not even getting into actual workflow issues.

What a mess. Did Apple hire some circa 2004 Microsoft UI engineers and let them loose on Lion?

Developers who may be reading this: I'd pay money for a replacement that brings me back Expose + Spaces.

Everyone, please make sure you register your desire for Apple to bring back Expose & Spaces with Apple themselves! You can do so right here: Apple Mac OSX Feedback

I just did so myself! I sent the following message:

Mission Control simply does not work for me, whereas Expose & Spaces worked brilliantly.

I have my 17" MacBook Pro connected to the old Apple 30" lcd, a setup which makes Mission Control a very very poor replacement for Expose & Spaces. With Mission Control, I have no way of quickly seeing every open window on my computer, like I could when I used Expose after using Spaces. With Mission Control, I have no way of setting up a standard "Spaces-like" desktop configuration that I can rely on as consistently being there, and move windows from one desktop to another. At first, I thought full screen mode might help me adjust to Mission Control, but with the 30" lcd, I have no use for full screen mode, and given that when you use full screen mode, it blacks out the secondary screen, there is actually reason not to use it. I could go on and on trying to explain how frustrating Mission Control is for me, but in the end, it comes down to this...

Why have Expose & Spaces been simply discarded?!? Why can't Expose, Spaces, & Mission Control all be available for use in Lion? That way, people computing on a MacBook Air can have their Mission Control, and, people like me, with two screens (and a 30" lcd) can use Expose & Spaces.

For me Expose & Spaces were quite literally, PERFECT! There was simply no need to change anything about how these two apps worked and worked together. Please bring them back to Lion. Is this really too much to ask? Have a look around the Internet and you'll see that complaints about Mission Control that mirror mine are prolific (and often go into far more detail that I have here).

I "upgraded" to Lion shortly after it was released... and then, after wasting a day trying to make Mission Control work for me, I promptly "downgraded" back to Snow Leopard. I've tried to be patient and wait for Expose/Spaces functionality to be available on Lion, but, especially now that iCloud & iOS5 are out, I really want to "upgrade" (again) to Lion. However, until either Apple or a third party brings back Expose & Spaces, I'll be sticking with Snow Leopard.

Would all other disgruntled Lion users do the same.

i not disgruntled. think Mission Control so much better than old bloated spaces is great. give it chance. you will get to love it and move on to. Apple not bringing back spaces. sorry. old feature now. nearly 9 month old since replaced.

Please explain how in anyway is Mission Control better than Expose and Spaces. I have had Lion almost from when it was launched on my iMac and I will never grow to love Mission Control.I also run a Macbook on Snow Leopard and I just caanot find one single benefit of Mission Control.

Re: Regular Expose in Lion

has no one here yet heard of ReSpaceApp? Its well on its way to restoring all of spaces & expose for Lion.

its great so far, I dont yearn for SL any longer. The Expose & Spaces functionality is being integrated a good pace.

Doesn't interest me, but may excite many here knowing there may well be a hack on it's way.

Good Luck

I've come to terms with Mountain Lion and the "Desktops" but I do have technical questions about "Spaces" and CPU. I do not like Mission Control.

When trying to set "Desktops" up on my 2011 iMac27, after finally upgrading from the Clearly Not Supported Snow Leopard, This is working somewhat ok, though I wonder about the internal configuration. I use custom strokes to access the new desktops, as I did with spaces (the horizontal config is not ideal for accessing Desktops).

The old version of "Spaces" assisted me in development with Pro applications, rendering on one space while rendering on a second/third space, with ease in CPU usage. It seems that the "Desktops" are not as seamless, it seems like the "Desktops," using the same applications, slows the computer down (Custom ordered fully loaded iMac 27.) "Spaces" did not have the same CPU usage. I wonder, were the "Spaces" individual desktops which did not use the same CPU/Memory/Storage that another "Space" was using?

Does anyone know the internal computing differences? Were "Spaces" using a method that allowed applications in one "Space" to run individually and separate than another application within a separate "Space"? Maybe OSXML uses more CPU and has nothing to do with Spaces/Desktops??

I'm just curious at this point. I keep my macs' applications slimmed down and minimal, only placing a pro application on each mac for that mac's intended useage. Now that they are all on Mountain Lion, I'm embracing.

Here is the link from Apple's Support when searching OSX ML documentation on Spaces. This goes to a discussion but does show up in official answers when searching...

How do I set up Mission Control. I miss spaces

In Mission Control the other "Spaces" will appear at the top of the screen. To create new ones move your cursor to the top right corner of the screen (or hold down the option key - as noted by @Therabyte) and click the 1/2 exposeddesktop . Lock apps to a specific "Space" (when out of Mission Control) click on the app icon in the dock and look under "Options".

The "Total Spaces" mentioned above will not install on OS X Mountain Lion (for my array of Macs) as the OS only allows Apple and Apple Approved Developer applications to be installed.

Pete - are you a complete and utter donut? The clue is in the title of the thread which is:

Bring back old working Spaces and Expose

The title of the thread isn't

Mission Control is wonderful don't bring back old working Spaces and Expose

If you have got absolutely nothing of any use to contribute to this thread then please be a good little boy and go away. Is it so difficult for you to grasp that none of your inane patronising ramblings have convinced us that you are right and we are all wrong.
